    CARL GASCHO 1925 - 2008

    Carl died peacefully, on Wednesday evening, October 15, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, at Chateau Gardens in Elmira. He celebrated his 83rd birthday on October 3rd. He is the beloved husband of Esther (Bingeman) - they were married for 52 years. Carl will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Ruth and her husband Lindsay Duffield of Unionville, David and his wife Patty Gascho of Kitchener, Jane and her husband Jim Schuett of Kitchener and Rob and his wife Angie Gascho of San Diego, CA. Carl's 11 grandchildren were very special to him, Jordan and Christian Duffield, Jonathan, Jamie and Jenna Gascho, Ryan and Bonnie, Christie, Jennifer and Richard Schuett, Audrey and TJ Gascho. He will also be fondly remembered by Roy and Martha Gascho of New Holland, PA, Lawrence and Jane Bingeman of Kitchener, Dora Bingeman of Kitchener and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Melinda (Steinman) and Emanuel Gascho; sister-in-law, Grace Gascho and brother-in-law, Jonas Bingeman. Gascho Motors Limited was started in 1926 by his father, Emanuel Gascho. Along with his brother, Roy, they carried on the family automotive business until their retirement in 1991. The third generation of the business continues to be operated today by Carl's son, David. After retirement, Carl lived his dream of being able to fish every day at his Muskoka cottage. He was a lifetime member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church. Friends are invited to share their memories with Carl's family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 2-4 p.m. and on Tuesday, October 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate Carl's life will be held at Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church, Kitchener, on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 10: 30 a.m. A reception will be held after the service, followed by a committal service at Bloomingdale Mennonite Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to House of Friendship, the Women's Missionary Association of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church or a charity of your choice. Carl's family would like to extend a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Chateau Gardens for the loving and attentive care he received.     Gascho, Emanuel, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gascho, was born near Baden, Ont., Mar. 26, 1892; died at his residence in Kitchener July 27, 1966; aged 74 y. 4 m. 1 d. He was married to Melinda Steinman, who died Feb. 22, 1957. To this union were born 2 sons (Carl and Roy) who survive. Also surviving are his wife, Lucinda Martin, 2 sisters (Mrs. Samuel Steinman and Lydia Gascho), and 6 grandchildren. Three sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Stirling Avenue Church, where funeral services were held July 30; interment in Woodland Cemetery

    The company's roots go back to 1923 when Gascho's grandfather, Emmanuel, and Nels Shantz, another mechanic, opened The Brunswick Garage at 16 Young St. in 1926. That's where a Williams Fresh Café coffee shop is now located in the Kitchener City Hall building.

    Gascho. - Christian, eldest son of Bishop John and Barbara (Erb) Gascho, was born near Baden, Ont., March 25, 1857; died at his home in Baden on Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 1943; aged 85 y. 10 m. 5 d. He accepted Christ in his youth and was baptized, united with the Amish Mennonite Church in Ontario, and was a faithful member to his end.Oct. 1, 1878 he was united in holy matrimony to Leah Zehr, near Wellesley, Ont. To this union were born 1 son and 5 daughters (Fannie, Mrs. Jacob B. Iutzi, Baden; Barbara, Mrs. Samuel Steinman, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mattie, Mrs. N. M. Steinman, Baden; Lydia, at home; Emanuel, Kitchener, Ont.; Lovina, Mrs. Sol Myer, who died Nov. 22, 1916).Dec. 10, 1893 he was ordained a Deacon in the Wilmot A. M. Church. Nov. 4, 1894, he was ordained a Minister of the Gospel at the same place, and remained and served in the Lord's vineyard till health failed (49 years).In August 1940, he suffered a very severe heart attack, from which he never fully recovered; and another attack July, 1941. From then on he failed more rapidly, until the early fall of 1942 when he took to his bed, his heart grew weaker and dropsy set in. After 4 months of suffering in bed he entered into rest, free from all sorrow and pain.He leaves his grief-stricken companion (who has been very feeble for a number of years), 1 son, 4 daughters, 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 4 brothers and 2 sisters (Menno and John E.     Gascho.-Leah Zehr, daughter of Michael and Barbara Boshart Zehr, was born near Wellesley, Ont., Aug. 15, 1857; peacefully fell asleep in Jesus May 12, 1944, at her home in Baden, Ont.; aged 86 y. 8 m. 27 d. She accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Amish Mennonite Church till called to her heavenly home. She had a lingering illness of bronchial and heart trouble for 19 years, and the last 3 months jaundice set in. On Oct. 1, 1878, she was united in marriage to Christian Gascho of Baden, Ont., who was later ordained to the ministry and served in the Wilmot A. M. congregation for almost 50 years. To this union were born 5 daughters and one son: Mrs. Fannie Iutzi, Baden, Ont.; Barbara, Mrs. Samuel Steinman, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mattie, Mrs. N. M. Steinman, Baden, Ont.; Lydia, at home; Emanuel Gascho, Kitchener, Ont.; Lovina, Mrs. Solomon Mayer, Pigeon, Mich. (deceased). Seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren also survive. Her companion, one daughter, one great-granddaughter, her parents, and all her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She had a great longing to leave this life of suffering and be at rest. She was a very kind and devoted mother to her family. Her Bible was her comfort and stay in life. Her last words were, "Through Jesus Christ our Lord." Her children rise up and call her blessed. Funeral services were conducted May 15 at her late home by Bro. Menno Wagler, and by Bros. M. O. Jantzi and C. F. Derstine at the A. M. Church west of Baden.

    Steinman - On the 28th of Nov. 1903, near New Hamburg, Waterloo Co., Ont., Christian Steinman, aged 52 Y., 17 D. He fell through the barn floor on the 27th, and at first felt no evil effects from the fall, but soon complained of pain in his head. Growing worse, a physician was called, who pronounced the case fatal, because of a ruptured blood vessel in the head. He became unconscious and the same evening after being speechless for some time, and passed away early next morning. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Jutzi) Steinman*, two sons and six daughters**, also three brothers and five sisters and many friends, all of whom deeply mourn his death. Buried Dec. 1. Funeral services at the house by John Nafzinger and at the M.H. by Chr. Zehr and Jacob M. Bender. Peace to his ashes.

    Mrs. Jonas B. Bingeman

    Many friends will deeply regret to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Cook Oberholtzer, beloved wife of Jonas B. Bingeman, which occurred at her home at Bloomingdale, Tuesday, November 10th, in her 68th year. Deceased will be sorely missed by a large circle of friends throughout the district by whom she was greatly beloved. There survive to mourn her death a husband, two sons and two daughters. Gordon, of South River, Alice, matron at the Freeport Sanitarium, Mrs. Irvin K. Weber, of Waterloo. and Marshall at home. Also one sister and one brother, Mrs. J. H. Sheppard of Bloomingdale and Abram C. Oberholtzer of South River. A large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral which was held Friday afternoon Impressive services were conducted at the United Church at Blooming dale after which interment was made in the Mennonite cemetery.

Shantz) predeceased him some six years ago. Funeral services were held Nov. 17 from his late home and at the Sterling Ave. Church, conducted by U. K. Weber, pastor of the congregation, and S. F. Coffman, of Vineland, Ont.

    Mrs. Catherine Shantz, 79, of Kitchener died at Elmira Private Hospital Monday. Born in Bridgeport, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was a member of Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church and of the Missionary Society. Surviving are three sons, Mervin of Alma, Edward of Kitchener and Frank of Kitchener; three daughters. Mrs. Marshall (Erma) Bingeman, Mrs. Maxwell (Florence) Becker and Mrs. Ewan (Anna) Cameron, all of Kitchener; one brother, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport: four sisters, Mrs. Addison D. Snyder of Bloomingdale, Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Mrs. Ben Drudge and Mrs. Walter Shantz, all of Bridgeport. Her husband, Allan B. Shantz, predeceasedher in 1931. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, until Friday noon, when removal will be made to Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church for the funeral at 2: 30 p.m., Rev. Wilfred Ulrich, assisted by Rev. U. K. Weber, will officiate. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.
