    Notes:

There is no death! What seems so is transition; This life of mortal breath Is but a suburb of the life elysian Whose portal we call Death. In Loving Remembrance of Catharine Kreutwiser Died April 1, 1890 Aged 53 years A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled, The boon His love had given; And though the body moulders here, The soul is safe in Heaven.

On June 29, 1904 John Gingrich had gone back to Canada to bury the former deacon William Hembling. William Hembling had moved to Grand Rapids to be with his daughter and son-in-law and died there of paralysis and old age on June 27, 1904 at age 85. His remains were taken by train and he was buried in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery, Woolwich Township. The costs of his funeral were listed on page 152 of the account book.

Hembling, a "preaching appointment" (MC) in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, ON. William Hembling from England homesteaded here about 1831. He was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church in 1858. The North Woolwich appointment was first known as Hembling. It is presumed that services were conducted in his home before the building of the church in 1872. The meetings were listed at four-week intervals. About 1875 Hembling associated himself with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ movement. After the schism of 1889 the North Woolwich church was used exclusively by the Old Order Mennonites. The Mennonite Church (MC) built its meetinghouse a few miles south at Floradale in 1896. Early ministers were Abraham W. Detweiler (1828-1912) and Joseph Gingerich (1842-1912). Peter Bowman became deacon in 1876.
