    ANDREW B. JARDINE 1823-1903

Andrew Bell Jardine was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 11, 1823 and came to Hespeler in 1862. He came to the area to carry out a pipe fitting contract for a Toronto firm with whom he was then employed. His skills and ability so impressed Jacob Hespeler that arrangements were made for Mr. Jardine to move to Hespeler with his family. Mr. Jardine worked in local factories and foundries for a number of years and then, in 1870, established his own foundry business, A.B. Jardine & Company Limited, in a small frame building near the public school. In the mid-1800's he moved the business into a stone factory built on Avenue St., now Guelph Ave. Initially the company manufactured shuttles, spools and bobbins for the textile trade but later moved to the manufacture of pipe threading and cutting tools, machines and pipe wrenches. Mr. Jardine also served as the first treasurer of the Hespeler Mechanics Institute and Public Library when it was organized on June 12, 1871. He died on February 21, 1903 and is buried in New Hope Cemetery.

University of Waterloo - Jardine family fonds - 1797-1927 - Call number: GA5 In 1862 Andrew Bell Jardine, a native of Scotland, visited Hespeler, Ont. where he shortly thereafter moved his family and started a small foundry. This was the A.B. Jardine Co., one of the pioneer industries of the area.

The fonds consists of 18 items, dating from 1797 to 1927, relating to members of the Jardine family. The two pieces of correspondence and fourteen documents help to outline some of the family`s history both in Scotland and in Hespeler, including marriage certificates, character references, articles of partnership, etc. The surname on documents of Scottish origin is spelled variously as `Jardin`, `Jordan` or `Jardine`.

    Notes:

Relict of Michael Brown. Peacefully, at her home on Queen St. E. in Hespeler, on Thursday morning, after an illness of several months, following a stroke just before Christmas, in her 72nd year. Since then, her condition has been gradually weakening. Another of Hespeler's old and respected citizens has passed to her reward. Daughter of the late Alexander Parks. She was born in the old Temperance House at Puslinch Lake, residing in Puslinch until some years after her marriage to Michael Brown. She moved to Hespeler about thirty-eight years ago and resided here ever since. She had been married to Mr. Brown for fifty-five years. Mr. Brown died eighteen years ago. During her long life in the neighbourhood, she saw many transformations. In her younger days, this district was practically all bush, with an isolated farm clearing at intervals. As time passed, clearings were made and the village of New Hope sprung into being. Later, the name was changed to Hespeler and the present busy manufacturing town came into being. Having an attractive personality, she won a wide circle of friends and was highly esteemed in a large circle of friends. No worthy appeal went unanswered by her. Of her twelve children, seven survive. She leaves three daughters: Mrs. John Jardine, Mrs. A. R. Proud and Mrs. James Hunter, all of Hespeler; four sons, Alex of Newark, NJ; William of Calgary; John Wesley and Elmo of Toronto. William and J. W. Parks are brothers and Mrs. William Hortop is a sister. In addition, there are fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from her residence on Sat. , March 3rd at 2 to the Hespeler Cemetery. Rev. J. J. Liddy, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which she was a lifelong member, conducted the service. Pallbearers: J. W. Parks, Will Parks, James Hunter, John Jardine, Albert E. Proud and J. W. Brown of Toronto.
