Mr. Carroll was well known in the city, having resided there for about a dozen years but he was better known to the residents of Puslinch, in which township he lived for about fifty years, earning by toil, sufficient to allow him to retire and spend his declining years in ease. He came to Canada from Ireland before the rebellion. He first settled in Bridgeport, near Waterloo and a short time later, was married and settled in Puslinch, about three miles from Guelph. He was an honest, straightforward man, kind and obliging and ever willing to do a good turn to a neighbour, for which his memory will be respected by many in Puslinch. Mr. P. F. Hanlon, so well and favourably known in Puslinch, is his son-in-law. His daughters are Mrs. P. F. Hanlon; Mrs. McCrae of Glenmorris; Mrs. Snyder of Puslinch; and Miss Kate, at home. _______________

The 1867 directory credits Wiliam Carroll with the purchase of 1 Jan 1829 of both the first lot of land in Puslinch and also the first sale of Clergy Reserve Land made in Ontario. Others from Puslinch did purchase land on the same day. There were 126 inhabitants in Puslinch at this time. Peter Byrne, for example, arrived in 1827 (according to the Annals), the Clairs and Hamiltons in 1828, and Bryan Carroll's family (of 7:4) and the Lairds also came early, probably before the first lots were sold. Notice all the lots purchased are along the Brock Road and all the families are Catholic Irish except for the Welsh Lowarch and the Scottish Dunn, who sold his lot in 1833.
