    Notes:

In the death of Mr. Wesley Eaton the community of Hespeler loses a valued and highly esteemed citizen.

He was born in Flamboro township, where Carlisle stands, on May 1st, 1838. Fifteen years later with his parents, brothers and sisters, moved into the farm adjoining the corporation. In 1871 he married Mary Ann Master and took up residence on part of the homestead. She died in 1890, leaving a sorrowing husband and eight children. Twelve years before his death he married Mrs. McCready of Hespeler, who was spared to be a helpmate in time of health and watched over him with tender care in his last days.

Mr. Eaton took no part in public affairs, was looked upon as an excellent farmer, and as a neighbor he was as such in its fullest term, and will be missed by the community. He leaves two brothers, Nelson and Enoch of Hespeler, and four sisters, Mrs. John Washborn, Hespler; Mrs. John Cober, Brussels; Mrs. Joseph Gingrich, of Caledonia; and Mrs. Amos Souder, Waterloo Township. Children survive from first marriage, Herbert, Morris and Stanley, at home: Mrs. John Brickel (Violet), Mrs. Henry Freybourne (Ella), Mrs. John Harris (Alice), of Hespeler.

Funeral will take place at his late residence, Hespeler cemetery, conducted by the A.O.F.W. of which order he was a member.

In 1834 a new set of township officers was created. These were the "fence viewers" whose job it was to settle disputes between neighbours as to the value of fencing provided by a neighbour, i.e. If livestock broke a fence down and caused damage to another's fields the fence viewer would decide if the fence had been up to standard and to what extent the damage was and how much money was owing in compensation. (Prior to 1834 this had been the job of the "Overseers of Highways", who checked roads, fences, ditch draining etc. and decided what maintenance work was needed and who was to help. The Overseer had complete control over who in his division was to help and called upon persons had to go and bring whatever tools were requested by the Overseer.) Fence viewers also had to settle disputes over drainage.

In January 1837 Isaac and Jacob Shantz Jr. were appointed Fence viewers for the Lower Part of Waterloo, east of the Grand River, Daniel Stauffer was for Lower Part of Waterloo west of the Grand River, Philip Bleam was for Preston and Adam Winters was appointed for the village of Waterloo.

David Clemons, "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 3rd, 1791. He was a distant relative of all those of his name. He came to this county when a young man and soon took an active part in the improvement of the same. During the years 1833-35 he resided in Berlin. From here he moved on the farm now possessed by John K. Devitt, then he moved to the vicinity of Preston where he died April 8th, 1852. In 1836 he was clerk for Waterloo Township and also collector of taxes for the same township. He may have held this position for several years. His family consisted of four children,"

    Notes:

CLEMENS - An inquest was held yesterday at the home of Mr. David Clemens, about three miles above the village of Preston, before Dr. Seagram, coroner of the District of Wellington and Gore, to investigate into the cause of death of Mrs. Charlena Clemens, the wife of the above David Clemens, who had been found dead on the previous night about 10 o'clock. A highly respectable jury had assembled of whom George Clemens, Esq., was chosen foreman and, being sworn, proceeded to view the body of the unfortunate woman and the scene of her death. The latter was most appalling, into a stable about three feet from the floor of a barn, some hundred yards or so from her dwelling house, a rope was fixed, the other end of which the deceased had tied round her neck with a running noose. The cord was just long enough to prevent her knees reaching the floor, her knees being doubled beneath her, tightening the cord round her neck to suffocation, she appeared in her dying agony to have clutched the halter with her hand to hasten her death, but the blood appeared meantime to have spurted from her nose and mouth, a quantity being on the floor and lengthening her suffering by diminishing the pressure on the brain. Finally, however, she perished, and about sundown, all her family being from home, a lad going into the barn, saw the body of the deceased hanging by the rope, and alarmed the neighbourhood. Two persons cut her down and the body, being stiff and cold, they saw that life was long gone, and that any attempt at restoring it was helpless. They carried the body to her late residence, and sent for the coroner. The inquest brought out few new facts other than what are stated above, except that since January, the deceased exhibited symptoms of mental derangement, the consequence of some disease of the brain. One witness swore that in the month of January, he was stopping in the house when at midnight the deceased got up, sung psalms, prayed, and entirely undressed herself, saying she was bound to travel through the world for eight months naked, moneyless, and without food. From that time to the day of her death, she had frequent returns of her malady. The last time she was seen alive, was about 9 o'clock in the morning of her death. Her children are all highly respectable and married, or being at a great distance from their mother's house, and her husband had gone on business to another township. This accounts for her death not being discovered sooner. The jury without retiring or any hesitation returned a verdict "that the deceased came to her death by strangulation while labouring under a fit of insanity".
