EVANS, ALFRED

At the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Chris R. Bond of the Lake Rd. in Puslinch Township, on Tuesday, July 28, 1936, in his 86^th year. The district loses a leader and lifelong resident, one of Puslinch Township's most prominent citizens. Mr. Evans was a son of William Evans and Mary Kydd, who came to Canada from England about a century ago, settling in Puslinch Township, near the Brock Road. Mr. Evans was born in Puslinch, on the farm now occupied by his brother, Thomas, near Hespeler. Some fifty-eight years ago, he married Margaret Porter, who predeceased him in the fall of 1930. He was a member of the United Church and served in active positions on the church board. He took an active interest in civic and political affairs and was interested in sports of all sorts. For the greater part of his life, he was engaged in farming on the third concession in Puslinch Township but nine years ago, retired and took up residence in Hespeler. Following the death of his wife, he lived for a time with his son, Arthur in Puslinch. Of later years, he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bond. Surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. C. R. Bond; Mrs. W. A. Grier of Owen Sound; Mrs. I. W. Shirk, missionary in Africa; six sons, Arthur, Percy and Robert of Puslinch; Kenneth of Leamington; Fred of Melfort, SK; George of Davis, SK; and one brother, Thomas Evans of Puslinch Township. The funeral from the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. R. Bond of Puslinch Township, took place on Thursday at 2, attended by a large number of friends. The pastor of the United Church, Rev. J. W. Hunt officiated, assisted by Rev. J. H. Peer of the Baptist Tabernacle. Interment in Hespeler Cemetery. Pallbearers: John Taylor, C. R. Bond, Lewis Evans, William Ross, W. J. Little and Edwin Shantz.

EVANS, MARGARET (Nee Porter)

On Thursday morning, October 23, 1930, Mrs. Alfred Evans of Cooper St. in Hespeler, after an illness of only a few days, death being due to typhoid fever. In her 77^th year, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Porter of Puslinch Township, where she was born, so that she has been a resident of this district all her life. Nearly three years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Evans celebrated their golden wedding. About two and a half years ago, they retired from the farm and came to live in Hespeler. She was of a quiet disposition, beloved by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband, six sons, Fred in Melfort, SK; George of Davis, SK; Percy, Arthur and Robert in Puslinch; Kenneth in Leamington; three daughters, Mrs. W. A. Grier of Owen Sound; Mrs. Sherk of West Africa; and Mrs. C. R. Bond of Puslinch. The arrangements for the funeral could not
be completed until word was received from the west but the funeral was from the United Church, of which she was a lifelong member. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon, with a short private service held at the house at 2 and a public service at the United Church at 2: 30, conducted by Rev. I. M. Moyer. A large number attended. Pallbearers: Thomas Evans, John Ruddell, A. S. Clemens, J. Marvin Eagle and Ed Shantz, all of the Hespeler district; and W. Thompson of Owen Sound.

EVANS, WILLIAM

At his home in Puslinch, on Wednesday, on the evening of the 21^st January 1896, at the ripe age of 80 years, following his wife to the grave within eleven days, another who braved the pioneer life in Puslinch. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were married for more than fifty years. Mr. Evans emigrated from Staffordshire, England in 1839, locating on lot 2, concession 4, Puslinch. About five years afterwards, he moved to lot 7 of the same concession, residing there till his death. By constant application and excellent judgment, the home became one of the finest in the township, farm after farm being added. He always took more enjoyment in developing the resources of his home, than in aspiring to positions of public trust or seeking municipal honours. He was a kind and obliging neighbour and always charitable when charity was merited. Though he had been in poor health for some time, his death was rather sudden. His funeral on the 23^rd to Kirkland Cemetery was very largely attended by people from far and near.

EVANS, MARY (Nee Kidd)

Mrs. William Evans, on Friday, January 10^th 1896, in the 74^th year of her age, after an illness of a little more than a week, another of the honoured pioneers that helped to make Puslinch Township and our country at large, what it is today. She came to this country from England with her father, the late John Kidd, in 1830 and settled on a farm on the Brock Road, where she resided for several years. In 1847, she married William Evans of the 4^th concession of Puslinch, the home she went to being her home till her death, a period of forty-nine years. Here the work of pioneer life was carried on with such intelligence and energy, that the farm was soon made one of the best in the township and as years elapsed, farm after farm was added, upon which most of the different members of the family are now situated. The family consists of five boys and two girls: Phenton, living in Waterloo Township near Hespeler; John, with his sister, Miss Ady, living on Manitoulin Island; Miss Evans, at home; Alfred and David, on farms near by; and Thomas, on the homestead. The members of the family are all highly respected and well known throughout the township and surrounding country. Mrs. Evans was a lady of that benevolent disposition, of whom it may truly be said, no one was ever sent hungry from her door. She was modest and retiring in her demeanor, a desirable neighbour, a good wife, an affectionate mother, her greatest ambition ever centring in the promotion of the best interests of her family and home. Her funeral on Sunday, notwithstanding the inclemency of the day, was one of the largest seen in the township. She was interred in the Kirkland Cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the entire community, rendered doubly great by the fact that their aged father is, at present and was at the time of the mother's death, in an apparently dying and unconscious condition.
