Mr. Kirkland continued as Tenant of Mr. John Phin until 1894. In that year, John R. Phin, having graduated from the Ontario School of Pharmacy decided to start in Hespeler and in his father's store. An attempt was made to buy Mr. Kirkland out but he refused to sell and moved his stock into a store across the way and there remained until he moved to Galt in 1897 where he finished out his days.

John R. Phin, upon his death in 1953 was succeeded by his son, Robert McIntyre Phin who had been many years with his father after he too graduated as a Druggist. And so, drugs have been sold over the counter at this one location, now Phin's Drug Store, from 1882 until the present; more than three score years and ten.

He has taken a foremost part in promoting the prosperity of the locality, and has evinced a degree of public spirit and an interest in political matters which secured him the Conservative nomination for the Legislature in 1879, but the Liberal majority in the Riding was too large to admit of his overcoming it, and he suffered defeat.

Doctor Robert McIntyre born at LaChute, P.Q., came here to practise Medicine in 1863 and continued until he died, aged 66. He was the family Doctor of many families for three generations. He brought babies beyond number into this world, including he who writes this text. January 4th, 1904, was election day in Hespeler; Doctor McIntyre who had served from 1886 three years as a member of the Hespeler School Board, then 12 years, 1889-1900 inclusive as Chairman, then in 1901-2-3 again as Member (a total of eighteen years) was a candidate for re-election as Trustee. Along in the afternoon an urgent call came for him to visit a patient and he hurried to answer the call. On his arrival he staggered and the spark of life went out for him. When the votes were counted it was found that he had headed the poll.

Dr. Robert McIntyre had taken in as a partner, Dr. Levi Clemens, and they rented the Conway store and had their office in it and ran a drug store in connection with their practise, which in those days was not at all uncommon.

In 1886, Dr. McIntyre sold out the drug business to Alex. G. McBean whom I remember quite well, and he continued until 1891 and then sold to Wesley M. Kirkland. And in that same year or the year after, Mr. John Phin bought the property from Ventry Conway as an investment. Mac. was a tall, well built athletic man, always wearing a smile and in business, very wide awake. He knew all the kids by their first names and all the kids were special friends of his. Just a dandy fine fellow.

MCINTYRE, ROBERT was born in LaChute, Quebec. He left school at age twelve, and at thirteen years became a timekeeper during construction of the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railway. A year later he became a clerk in a store at St. Andrews, remaining there for five years. In 1857 be came to Berlin, here he matriculated from the Grammar School. He then entered the medical faculty of Victoria University, graduating in 1862.

His card in the Berlin Telegraph dated January, 1863, read

    R. McIntyre M. D. Physician, Surgeon Accoucheur. Office in Mr. George Rife's Building Hespeler, C. W. References Dr. Clarke, Guelph

In later years he built an office building opposite the Pubic School

During his career he served as Medical Officer of Health for 39 years, and was a Public School Trustee for 17 years. He was President of the Hespeler Liberal Association, and was connected with the 29th. Battalion for 20 years.

A report concerning his son Hacco appeared in the Dumfries Reformer on October 29, 1885. He had been practicing with his rifle, putting bullets through the hats of his companions, from a distance of twenty five yards, when he put a bullet through his toe. When he was older he was associated with travelling medicine shows, some of which featured fancy shooting.

In 1886 an item in the Dumfries Reformer said that a new student had just arrived from Ireland, to join him. The next issue said

On April 3, 1885 the Galt Reporter said:

Sold out - Dr. McIntyre has sold his drugstore and good will thereof to Mr. McBain of Galt. Mr. McBain comes highly recommended as a druggist, and no doubt the change will be the best for all concerned.

This comment raises questions, but answers none.

On January 4, 1907 he was making a house call, when he fell dead of a heart attack. He was 67 years of age. He had been a candidate for school trustee, and two hours after he died it was announced that he had been re-elected

    Notes:

Death of James Phin, Esq., of Kennaquhair, Waterloo.

This aged gentleman passed away on Monday last in his 88th year.

For many years Mr. Phin occupied a prominent position in the active life of, this county, as an agriculturist, politician, and leader in the social improvements demanded as the years rolled by. But although living to what may be called a great age, Mr. Phin for many years was a strong man and was reluctantly compelled to relinquish his active assistance to projects which he deemed useful to the people amongst whom he lived and the Province of his adoption. For many years possessed of great wealth, he was able to indulge in the ease his health, demanded, and at the same time surrounded himself with the literature which his active mind demanded.

Mr. Phin leaves two sons who are well known in this section, being prominent as farmers and also in municipal and business concerns of this and adjoining Counties. Mr. John Phin, long associated with the conservative party in this Riding, was on one occasion its standard bearer for the Provincial Legislature, and though then defeated, won the respect of all shades of the electorate and has since been foremost in promoting the welfare of the party in the Riding. Mr. James Phin, the other son, is also widely known, being a prominent member of the liberal party, and also in the municipal record of the Township in which he lives, having been its Deputy-Reeve at one time and for the last two years its Reeve. Both brothers are prominent Agriculturalists and are also Directors on the Board of the Guelph and Ontario Loan and Investment Society of Guelph. Mrs. (Sheriff) Scarfe, of Brantford, is a daughter of the gentleman whose death we now chronicle.

Mr. Phin's funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to Hespeler cemetery, and was attended by an immense concourse of his old friends and friends of the family from all sections of the Province.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE JAMES PHIN. -
The funeral of the late James Phin took place on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by perhaps the largest concourse of people ever gathered together on a similar occcasion in Waterloo Township. Besides his old friends and neighbors, there were many from Guelph, Paslinoh, Galt, Hespeler, Preston, and other places, who had come to show their last mark of respect for one who had lived so long in the Township and held a prominent position in it. Rev. Mr. Haigh and Rev. Dr. Cornish, of Hespeler, conducted the services at the house, after which many had an opportunity of taking a last look at the placid features of the deceased. The cortege then proceeded to Hespeler, the pallbearers being Lewis Kribs and Dr. McIntyre, of that village, James Young, Galt, David Stirton, Edmund Morris, and James Innes, M. P., Guelph. On arriving at the the cemetery, cemetery, Rev. Dr. W. Williams, of Lindsay, read the burial service according to the Methodist form, after which all that was mortal of the deceased was consigned to the earth. The company then adjourned to the Methodist church, where a solemn memorial service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Williams, and old friend and formerly deceased's pastor.
