Lifetimes: Pediatrician combined empathy with a spirit of adventure

By Valerie HillSpecial to the Record Mon., May 23, 2022

Colin Smith didn't realize his sister, Marcia Smith, had an ulterior motive when she offered to join his volunteer group bound for Haiti in 1983.

The volunteers were from a missionary church in Elmira and their role would be to build a new hospital. Colin, who has diabetes, would be far from any medical care if he needed help and Marcia worried.

"She had a big heart," he said. "I had no idea she'd been watching over me."

Marcia wanted to ensure her brother received the best care if needed. But while in Haiti, Marcia, a pediatrician, also went into full doctor mode, delivering babies, including several sets of twins and even Siamese twins.

Marcia consistently worked quietly in the background, always considering what the patient needed. She was not interested in making money, said her longtime partner, Marie Chamberlain.

Sister Jeanette Hall recalls when Marcia had a practice in Peterborough, Ont., in the early 1970s and was baffled by a small boy's stomach pains. She sat with the lad in hospital for hours, slowly drawing him into her orb of comfort and safety. He finally confessed that he'd swallowed a bottle cap, something that would not have shown up on x-rays. That confession saved him from invasive exploratory surgery.

"I was in awe of this woman," said Jeanette. "She hadn't taken time to eat or sleep, she was so concerned for him."

Though Marcia had an exemplary career in medicine spanning decades, her early start was rocky. She was born Aug. 24, 1932, in St. Jacobs, the eldest of six children. Her mother Vera Smith was a stay-at-home mom and her dad Marvin owned a shoe factory, later becoming the town's postmaster.

    CHARLES S. SMITH.

Among Heidelberg's popular and well known citizens this gentleman is entitled to a prominent position. He was born in the Province of Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany, in 1850. In 1861, then only eleven years of age, he came to Canada with his parents. In 1869 he went to the United States, where he was employed at his trade. Prior to this he had served an apprenticeship with George Fisher, of Drayton. He established his present business here in February, 1877, and his efforts have been crowned with success. He was married in 1872 to a Miss Kinzel, also a native of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. They have had nine children, all of whom are still living. Oscar, one of the sons, has a shoe shop at St. Jacobs. Catherine is the wife of Enos P. Bowman, a well-to-do miller, of Thorold, Ont. Mary is an employee of one of the Berlin factories. The rest of the children are living at home. Mr. Smith's father, the late John Smith, was a well known citizen of St. Jacobs. The subject of this sketch is closely identified with the best interests of Heidelberg, especially in the religious welfare of the village. In the latter capacity his services have been most conspicuously in evidence during the recent remodeling of the Lutheran church, of which he has long been a member, being at present a trustee of that body. He is also identified with its educational interests and has been a member of the Heidelberg School Board. Mr. Smith, in addition to making boots and shoes to order and repairing, keeps constantly on hand quite a large stock of ready- made footwear of the latest and best manufacture. His establishment - store, shop and residence combined - is a substantial brick affair, and can be classed with the most valuable real estate of the community.

    ____________________

Levi Cress, whose death was briefly noted in this column last week was born in St. Jacobs where he resided all his lifetime. His father was the late Ephraim Cress and his grandfather the late Simon Cress who was among the first settlers from Pennsylvania in Waterloo County in 1806. Mr. Cress for many years, was engaged in farming on a section of the old homestead, on which his grandfather had settled. He had lived retired for quite a number of years.

Fifty-three years ago the deceased was married to Marian Geib who, with the following seven children, survives him: Noah Cress, Berlin, Henry Cress Elmira, Mrs. 1. B. Brubacher, St. Jacobs; Mrs. (Rev.) W. Hench, Golden Lake; J. G. Cress, Berlin; Mrs. O. J. Smith, St. Jacobs; Aaron Cress, London. There are one brother and two, sisters; they are: Mr. John Cress and Mrs. John B. Wideman, St. Jacobs, and Mrs. Bernhardt Moyer, Berlin.

The cause of death was the infirmity of old age, which, how ever, had not become acute until a week ago Wednesday. Prior to that day, Mr. Cress had shown a remarkable vitality. As was his wont, he was hale and hearty up to the time of the setting in of the fatal affliction. The demise of Mr. Cress means the loss of a splendid type of citizen, whose characteristics included honesty, integrity and kindness. He was a descendant of the good Pennsylvania stock which has been such a big factor in the agricultural and industrial development of the northern sections of the county. Mr. Cress was 79 years and 28 days of age. The deceased was a member of the Old Mennonite faith. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at 2.15, from his late residence and to the Mennonite Church, thence to the Lutheran Cemetery for interment.
