Snyder, Dilman S., son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Snyder, was born in Wilmot Twp., Out., April 22, 1879; died at Waterloo, Ont., Feb. 25, 1963; aged 83 y. 10 m. 3 d. In 1908 he was married to Ida Weber, who died in 1943. In 1946 he was married to Nora Hunsberger, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons and 2 daughters (John, Ralph, Vera-Mrs. Clayton Shantz, and Alice-Mrs. LeRoy Good), one brother (Herman), and 3 sisters (Barbara-Mrs. Nelson Shantz, Veronica-Mrs. Noah Snyder, and Annie). He was a member of the Shantz Church, where funeral services were held Feb. 28, in charge of Leslie Witmer.

Dilman S. Snyder, 83, of 125 Erb St. West, Waterloo, died Feb. 25 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John K. Snyder and a native of Wilmot Township. He farmed at RR 2, Baden, until his retirement in 1946 and had lived in Waterloo for the past 14 years.

Mr, Snyder was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden.

He married Ida Weber in 1908 and she died in 1943. He married Nora Hunsberger in 1946 and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John W. of RR 2, Baden, and Ralph C. of Vineland; two daughters. Mrs. Clayton (Vera) Shantz and Mrs, LeRoy (Alice) Good of RR 2, Baden; a brother, Herman of Kitchener; three sisters, Mrs. Nelson (Barbara) Shantz of Elmira, Mrs. Noah (Veronica) Snyder and Annie of Waterloo, and 14 grandchildren. Two sisters and four brothers predeceased him.

Snyder.- Ida Weber, daughter of the late Samuel and Susannah Weber, was born Aug. 31, 1885, in Woolwich Twp., Ont.; passed away, after a lingering illness, at her home near Baden, Ont., Dec. 26, 1943; aged 58 y. 3 m. 26 d. She was married to Dilman Snyder, Sept. 9, 1908. To this union were born 4 children: Vera, wife of Clayton Shantz, Baden; John, on the homestead; Alice wife of LeRoy Good, Wis.; and Ralph at home. She leaves to mourn, her husband, 4 children, 4 grandchildren, 3 sisters, a brother, and many relatives and friends. She accepted her Lord as her personal Saviour in her early youth and remained faithful until the end. She bore a faithful testimony to her family, and to the community. As a mother in the home she will be greatly missed. She always had a friendly disposition and was very much interested in the welfare of her home, her family, the Church and all its activities. She especially exercised her talent in song. We trust that our loss is her eternal gain and that she has gone to occupy a beautiful mansion above which God has prepared for His own. Funeral services were held Dec. 30, at the home and at the Shantz Mennonite Church. Bros. Manasseh Hallman and L. H. Witmer officiated. Burial in the Shantz Cemetery.

Rest on, dear Mother, your labors are o'er,

SNYDER. - On the 23d of Oct. 1900, in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Bro. John K. Snyder, aged 63 years, 11 months and 17 days. We trust that according to his desire he went home to his resting place "to die no more." He suffered with Bright's disease over a year. Sometimes he had much pain, but was not confined to his home long. He was present at our recent communion meeting not long before his death, thus expressing his faith in the great atonement accomplished by the death and suffering of our Lord. He was married to Veronica Shantz, Mar. 26, 1861. To this union were born eleven children, one of whom died in infancy. He leaves a widow, ten children and eleven grandchildren. Buried at Shantz's grave yard, in Wilmot, Oct. 25th, 1900, followed by a large concourse of friends to his last resting place. Funeral services were conducted at the house by A. S. Cressman and by Joseph Nargang at the grave. In the meeting house the services were conducted by Orphan Wismer in English, from I Pet. 1: 24, 25, and in German by Noah Stauffer from 2 Cor. 5: 1.

Mr. John K. Snyder, a well-to-do and highly respected farmer of Wellesley died at 1.10 on Tuesday, after a lingering illness. Death was due to heart failure, brought on by many months of suffering from dropsy, and Bright's disease. He sustained a paralytic stroke a year or more since. Deceased was about 60 years old and was well thought of by all for his sterling integrity, industry and kind heartedness.

SNYDER. - Veronica Shantz was born Jan. 5, 1843. She was married to John K. Snyder March 26, 1861. To this union were born 11 children (Ephraim, Ervin, Barbara, Emmanuel, Annie, Mary Ann, David, Veronica, Dilman, Herman, and Olivia). Emmanuel and David predeceased her. She died at her home in Wilmot Tp., Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 22, 1935; aged 92 y. 10 m. 17 d. She leaves 9 children, 26 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers (David, Stauffer, and Herman Shantz), and a host of relatives and friends. She was one of the pioneers in the community in which she lived. They started their home in the woods, doubtless with many hardships, but as the years rolled by they were able to build up a nice comfortable home. In this same home she lived 74 years amid all the changes that come in life. Oct. 23, 1900, she was bereft of her husband and she lived a widow's life with her family for 35 years. She was a good mother, "a mother in Israel," always willing to do for others. She was wonderfully blessed with health and strength until the last few years of her life. Her thinking capacity, and finally her bodily strength began to fail, and for only two weeks she was confined to her bed-without sickness or pain, just faded away until she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Funeral services were conducted at the home of Dilman Snyder on Nov. 26 by Bro. Orphen Wismer, and at the Shantz Church near Baden, Ont., by Bro. Jonas Snyder (Text, Prov. 22: 28) and Bro. Manasseh Hallman (Text, Jno. 17: 24), where a large number of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Christian Schneider, "was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, May 28th, 1804. When two years of age his parents moved to Canada and settled in Doon, Ontario, where he was raised. On December 5th, 1825, he was married to Anna (No. 2104), daughter of John and Anna (Schowalter) Cressman. She was born June 18th, 1803, and died July 12th 1887. Shortly after their marriage they moved about a mile south of Breslau where he was the proprietor of the large farm now in possession of his youngest son, Absalom. he is the only one of his father's large family that is still living, and is yet quite strong considering his great age. His mental powers are good yet and he seems to enjoy the best of health but is anxiously waiting for the time to be called home to the mansions beyond. Since the decease of his wife he resides in his own house on the old place, having a housekeeper. His family consisted of eight children".

Shantz.--Barbara Shantz, beloved wife of David Y. Shantz, died Sept. 11, 1913; aged 90 y. 10 m. 25 d. The funeral was held on Sunday, Sept. 14, from her late residence to Stantz's Cemetery for interment. Her husband preceded her 19 years. She leaves to mourn 5 children, (2 daughters and 3 sons), 32 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild, and an only brother, Noah Stauffer, and a host of friends. She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and a friend in need. The funeral was one of the largest over held at the place. Funeral services were conducted by Bishop Jonas Snyder and Manasseh Hallman. A very impressive sermon was preached from Isa. 38: 1, "Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die and not live" (John 16: 33). "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years, as long as she was able to go to church her seat was seldom vacant. The last few years of her life were spent mostly at home, her body and mind being somewhat weak, but she was always able to be up and around within one week previous to her death. She was confined to her bed just one week. The last few days she lay unconscious of her surroundings with all the loving friends around the bedside. With her life ends the last of the pioneers of the community. She was one of the first settlers, had the privilege of seeing the community build up and saw her companions laid away one by one. She was the last to be laid to rest. May we ever cherish her memory.

Samuel Weber," eldest and only son of Henry Weber, was born November 26th, 1821. On March 7th, 1844, he was married to Anna, daughter of Daniel and Veronica (Schneider) Martin. She was born August 2nd, 1824. After his marriage he took possession of his father's large farm where he resided until his death which took place October 13th, 1886.* He was an ordained minister of the Mennonite Church. He was an eloquent speaker, a man of great influence and a good worker among his co-religionists. The church lost a worthy minister through his death. They had a large family, all of whom attained the age of twenty-one except two who died young."

Martin Meeting House

According to Isaac Horst, "Martins meeting house was the first of the Old Order places of worship to be built. A meeting house is reported to have been built in 1830; burial was begun in the adjoining cemetery in 1831. Martins was aptly named. The first three bishops of the area were Martins, all descended from the pioneer, Peter Martin. The land on which the house stands was formerly owned by Martins (1979: 376)." Peter Martin, Jr. purchased 220 acres of land from his brother, Henry Martin, on May 8, 1824. Apparently he set aside four acres for a meeting house and burying ground at that time. The first burial is reported to have been that of Peter Martin, Sr., who died March 2, 1831. The meeting house was enlarged in 1900.

John Weber was the first minister, followed by Abraham W. Martin, Samuel Weber, Paul Martin, Tobias Martin and Urias Martin. At one time surrounded by countryside, the meeting house and cemetery are now completely encircled by the commercial development brought about by the rapid expansion northward of the city of Waterloo.

He met with a friend on the street and while engaged in conversation with him a tool of one of the party who was engaged in tinning the roof of Mr. Doersam's hotel, slipped over the edge of the building and struck him on the head. He was carried into the house unconscious and remained in that state until his death next day.

Deplorable Accident in Waterloo

A very sad and ultimately fatal accident occurred in the town of Waterloo on Saturday afternoon last, the victim being a very old and respected resident of the Township, named Samuel Weaver. It appears that at the time of the accident he, in company with a companion was standing examining the new patent iron shingles which workmen were at the time engaged in laying on the roof to the building at which they were standing. These workmen had with them an iron bar which they were using for some purpose, and which when not in use was placed with its end between the boards of the roof. By some means this bar worked lose and just as Mr. Weaver was looking at one of the shingles it slipped from its fastening and fell with crushing effect directly upon his head. As the bar weighted upwards of twenty pounds the consequences can be easily imagined. When picked up, it was found he was entirely unconscious, and examination showed that his injuries were such as to leave no hope whatever for his recovery. He lingered on in an unconscious state, however, until Tuesday morning, when he breathed his last. As we have said Mr. Weaver was universally respected wherever known, and his sad death has thrown quite a gloom over Waterloo and its neighborhood.

Historic Building:
The Wissler-Cascaden house, a two-storey red brick Georgian home was built in 1842 by John Wissler, a Waterloo Township pioneer who arrived from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1834. One year after his arrival Wissler established the Eagle Tannery. A shoemaking, harness making and mercantile business soon sprang up in conjunction with the tannery. This industry, including the workers homes on nearby Bridge Street, formed the nucleus of the settlement of Lexington.
Wissler spared no expense in the construction of his home, elaborate window and door surrounds were included along with a plaster cornice in the drawing room. The most striking feature of the interior, however, is the two-storey front entrance hall which rises a full twenty feet to a magnificent plaster medallion on the ceiling. Access is gained through two arches which rest on moulded plaster shells and frame a cherry stairway which climbs to the attic level.
A number of additions have been made to the home. The first, a two-storey addition to the west side was completed around 1858. The second, which contained a bake oven, schnitz oven, ash oven and smoke house, was added behind the first between 1859 and 1875. The last addition, this time on the south side, provided a one and a half storey salt box kitchen which was designated to serve as the doddy wing at the turn of the century.
The property was sold to Samuel Weber in 1873. It remained in the Weber and Shantz families for over one hundred years until the late 1970s when it was converted into apartments and fell into disrepair. The present owners, Ron and Wendy Cascaden, have made a commitment to restoring the house.
All of the exterior elevations of the Wissler-Cascaden House and the front hill are deemed to be of both architectural and historical significance.<sup>1a
