    _______________________

    DANIEL L. KNECHTEL.

All those who have for years lived in the neighborhood of Mannheim will readily recognize this name, for Mr. Knechtel was conspicuously identified with that village when it was yet basking in the sunshine of prosperity. He was born in the province of Rhein, Bavarian, Prussia, on December 11, 1845. His father, the late Jacob Knechtel, emigrated from his native land to New York City some time in the year 1856. After a residence of ten years in that city be moved with his family to Mannheim, where he was for many years engaged as a cabinet maker. To this trade Daniel L. was also apprenticed. When his father retired from business he took charge of the saw mill, for some time previous operated by Aber Bricker, and operated it for a period of about fifteen years. After this he removed to Berlin where for a year or two he was employed in J. Y. Shantz's button factory.

On February 25, 1868, Mr. Knechtel was married to Susanna Toman, who was born in Waterloo township on Jan. 20, 1847. The birth results of this union are five children, as follows: Albert, born in Mitchell, Perth county, November 7, 1869; Allan, born in Mannheim, September 30, 1871; William Henry, born in Mannheim, February 29, 1876; Jacob, born in Mannheim, October 6, 1879; Laura Elma, born November 6, 1884. The children are all grown up.

In 1893 Mr. Knechtel discontinued working as a mechanic and took up agricultural pursuits. He purchased lot No. 5, 100 acres, formerly owned by Wendel E. Shantz, being located about a half mile north of Bleam's road and one mile west of Mannheim. Though it was his first attempt at farming he has been thoroughly successful. But he was fortunate in having a devoted and industrious wife who was inured to farm life, she having been reared to womanhood on a farm. Mr. Knechtel, however, is a gentleman possessed of considerable practical intelligence and ripe experience, and for that reason is not handicapped in anything he undertakes. His mature mechanical knowledge in the line of carpentering and familiarity with machinery is of splendid assistance to him as a farmer, for when a fence needs repairing or a building repaired, or a new one erected, he is fully competent to perform the job without extra assistance from outside, unless it is required in the raising of a large structure.

Allan, the second eldest son, is also engaged on the farm. He has a wife and two children and lives with the parents in the family residence. Allan is a stalwart young fellow and takes to farming very naturally, as he appears to understand it somewhat thoroughly. The fine, thriftylooking lot of hogs he is feeding is amply sufficient to substantiate the latter assertion. Horses and other animals about the premises show that they are kindly treated and well fed, and there appears to be an abundance of feed.

What the writer was in particular pleased to observe while sojourning for a night at this hospitable home was the quiet harmony and kind courtesy predominating between parents and son and daughter-in-law, all living under the same roof. The little off spring of the latter seems to be the tie that binds all in one indissoluble family union, for the grandmother, a kind and generous-hearted woman, tolerates in these innocent little ones what some irritable species of female would consider annoyance. But in this happy family circle harsh words are conspicuously absent, and he who happens to enter within its sacred precincts finds nothing to grate harshly upon one of nervous temperament and humane instincts. The parents are members of the Mennonite church and within their home predominate true christian principles as taught by that faith. My visit to this place is one among those I will fondly remember. The young people are members of the Lutheran church.

KNECHTEL. Sussannah, widow of the late Daniel L. Knechtel of Kitchener, Ont., died at her home Nov 13, 1935. She suffered considerably in her time, being at death's door a number of times. However, she bore all with the finest of Christian fortitude. Her perennial cheerfulness was one of her marked traits. Her steady faith in the Lord carried her through a multitude of hard experiences. She was the second oldest member of the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. She was a faithful and highly esteemed member. Though frail, old, and her back bent to well nigh the thighs, she was loved and respected by the young, whose interests were always upon her heart. She will be greatly missed by pastor and members. She is survived by 4 sons and 1 daughter (Albert, Allen, and William, all of Kitchener; Jacob of Mannheim, and Mrs Albert Huffman of Kitchener); also 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren survive. Two services were held - one at her home church (Kitchener), the other at her church of earlier days (Mannheim). She was buried at the latter cemetery. The following brethren were in charge: C. F. Derstine, S. F. Coffman, and Manasses Hallman.
