    Notes:

    Death of Bernard Schmuck

After a long and useful life, one of the best known residents of Weissenburg district died yesterday in the person of Mr. Bernard schmuck. The deceased was in his 86th year, and for over 60 years had been a successful farmer and pump-maker in Weissenburg. His fame and ability as a pump-maker was known throughout the country, and today there are pumps still in operation that have been in use for 50 years that were made by Mr. Schmuck. He was born in Alsace Lorraine, when that province was owned by France. When a boy of 18 he came to America and went to work in Buffalo. Later he came to Canada, and lived for some time at Ancaster, before purchasing the farm at Weissenburg some sixty years ago. Mr. Schmuck was a splendid type of man, and of a robust constitution. Some years ago he lost one foot, the result of blood poisoning, from a splinter which entered his foot while chopping wood. Apart from this injury he remained in good health right up to almost a week ago, when the infirmities of old age made it necessary for him to take to his bed. He passed peacefully away yesterday morning. The late Mr. Schmuck's wife predeceased him 14 years ago. He is survived by six sons, Bernard, on the old homestead; Charles, of Toronto, formerly proprietor of the City Hotel, Guelph; Frank, of Kitchener; Vincent, of St. Paul; Lewis and Albert of Guelph. There are also two daughters, Mrs. A. Lehman, of Kitchener; and Mrs. Smith, of Waterloo. The funeral will be held on Saturday to the RC Cemetery at New Germany, requiem mass being celebrated at St. Boniface's Church, of which the deceased was a devoted member. He was also one of the trustees of that church and helped to build it, drawing stone from Guelph at the time of its erection. - Guelph Mercury (Friday).

    DEATH OF MRS. SCHMUCK

Guelph Herald: Mrs. Mary Messner Schmuck, wife of Mr. Bernard Schmuck, and mother of Mr. Charles Schmuck, of the City Hotel, died rather suddenly at her residence, Woolwich Township, on Tuesday afternoon. She had been ill for the last month with stomach trouble, but she was able to be around and her physicians thought she was in no immediate danger, until a short time before her death, when she suddenly began to sink and rapidly passed away, aged 67 years. She was born on the 10th of December, 1835, in Salsarlsac, France and came to the United States, with her parents when four years of age, settling in Buffalo. There she was married to Mr. Bernhard Schmuck. After a residence in that city of two years, they came to New Germany, where Mr. Schmuck went into the pump manufacturing business, afterwards buying a farm in Woolwich Township. They have since resided on the farm, near New Germany, where Mrs. Schmuck was very well known. She was, indeed, a kind and motherly woman and always enjoyed the affection and esteem of her neighbors and friends. The members of the family besides her aged husband, are Bernhard, on the old homestead, Charles, of the City hotel, Guelph, Joseph, of Kussuth; Frank, Western Hotel, Walkerton; Vincent, of Detroit; Louis and Albert, of the Sleeman Brewing and Malting Company, Limited, Guelph; Mrs. Joseph Melrose, Minnesota; Mrs. Zettel, Ayton; Mrs. Kramer, Regina; Mrs. Lehman, Guelph.

    Notes:

Esteemed New Germany Woman 89 Years Young; 101 Great Grandchildren

One of Waterloo County's older women residents possesses a very unique record and looks back over her life with a great deal of satisfaction. And well she may do so. For at the age of 89 years she heads family numbering in all 180. The woman is Mrs. Catherine Bruder of New Germany, widow of the late Mr. Joseph Bruder of that place. Her family include 10 children of her own, 63 grandchildren, 101 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. All in the short space of 89 years.

Mrs. Bruder, who had been in good health until six years ago, now lives with her daughter. Mrs. Jacob Weiler in New Germany. For forty years she lived on the Bruder homestead near New Germany, moving into the village 37 years ago and keeping house in her own home. looking after the household duties, and caring for her own garden. Six years ago when her health began to fail she took up residence with her daughter, where she still lives.

Mrs. Bruder was born in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, as Catherine Fate. That was in the year 1845. At the age of two she came with her parents to Canada, taking up their pioneer life on a homestead in the Queen's Bush near what is now Preston. At the age of 18 she was married to the late Joseph Bruder, who died some 37 years ago. The wedding was performed in St. Boniface R. C. Church in New Germany by the late Rev. Father Kowalski. She immediately took up her new life with her husband on what is now known as the Bruder homestead where she engaged in the thousand-and-one duties then performed by the pioneer housewife. Her duties included not only the household work, but helping in the fields with all the crops. In the evenings she spent her time hunched under a lamp of candle-light sewing, knitting, darning, crocheting and knitting garments for her steadily growing family. These works took all her time from sunrise until late into the night. She recalls that she attended school only one day in her life, hence she has not learned the arts of reading and writing, never-the-less she has made a great success of her life.

Mrs. Bruder has been a faithful member of St. Boniface Church, attending each Sunday with the exception of the past four years when she has been too frail to leave her daughter's home. She still possesses full faculty of her mind, thinking quickly, as well as being able to see and hear perfectly. She spends her time glancing through photographs of her descendants which she has pasted in a large family album.

Her ten children are Mrs. Gottfried Reinhart, Kitchener, Mr. Joseph Bruder, New Germany, Mrs. Chris. Reinhart, Kitchener, Mrs. Rudolph Reinhart, Kitchener, Mr. Henry Bruder, Morse, Sask., Mrs. Andrew Weiler, Waterloo, Mr. Clements Bruder, Kitchener, Mrs. Jacob Weiler, New Germany, Mr. Charles Bruder, Pilkington, and Mrs. Norman Reinhart, Kitchener.

Just after the arrival of the 1;15 p.m. train from Berlin on Friday last a terrible accident occurred at the station in this town, whereby John Reinhardt, well known as baggage-man and brakeman on the train, suffered instant death. As is generally the custom, after the passengers had alighted, the employees proceeded to make up the train for the afternoon trip to Waterloo, and it was while thus engaged that poor Reinhardt met his terrible fate.

It appears that the passenger and baggage-car on this train are fitted with what is known as the "Miller" coupling, which works to a charm so far as the cars fitted with it are concerned; but when it becomes necessary to couple freight cars to the "Miller" considerable difficulty is frequently experienced. On this occasion some freight cars were to be attached to the train, and they were brought down from the freight-shed by the engine. When the cars were coming down the line, Reinhardt and Theodore Mann, brakeman, were on top of them at the brakes; but when approaching the passenger portion of the train Reinhardt got off his car and ran ahead to make preparations for the coupling. He failed, however, in guiding the link into the "slot" in the drawhead of the freight car, and it glanced off to the left-hand side forcing the "Miler" coupling past the side of the drawhead, and allowing the cars to come together. When they struck, the momentum carried the passenger and baggage-cars a few feet, holding Reinhardt in the terrible vice. Then they separated; and with the last effort of his life the poor fellow stepped up on the station platform, walked a few steps toward the fence, and fell on the boards in a heap - dead. It was afterward found that his ribs had been crushed in upon his heart, although outwardly the flesh over the spot was scarcely bruised.

John Reinhardt had been connected with the train running on the Galt branch for many years in fact, ever since the opening of the road, if we are not mistaken. He was a remarkably quiet and inoffensive man, ever ready to oblige a friend, and was universally liked. He was aged 37 years, and leaves a widow and 5 children to mourn his fearfully sudden death. It is satisfactory to know, however, that he leaves them above want, having saved over $3000 out of his earning, besides holding a policy in the G.T. employees insurance company. He was widely known to travelers on the Grand Trunk, as well on the main line as on the branch, having been baggage man on the "Dutch mail" when it ran between Galt and Toronto some years ago. The remains were conveyed from his residence in Galt to his father's residence, Shantz Station, on Saturday, and form thence were taken for interment to the R.C. cemetery at Little Germany on Sunday.
