    LORNE MILLS

The village just now is feeling the effect of the temporary suspension of operations at these mills, for it is mainly owing to the existence of this industry that business activity is maintained. But it is nevertheless highly satisfactory to the business men to know that the suspension will be but a few weeks, for the purpose of giving the enterprising proprietors time to complete their plans of overhauling the entire plant and put in some of the improved mill machinery, which work is now being done as rapidly as possible. In fact the entire establishment has been gutted from basement to the third story, so that very likely by the time this reaches CHRONICLE readers the village of Heidelberg will be in a position to boast of one of the best equipped modern roller process flouring mills in the Province. The principal new additions will be the celebrated gyrator sieve the latest and best invention in mill machinery known to the trade, and which are being rapidly adopted by all prominent mill men throughout Canada and the United States

The Lorne Mills were built in 1878 by Kappas and Kreutziger, and probably derive the same from the Marquis of Lorne who was then Governor-General of Canada. The partnership did not exist, however, more than a year or so, when Mr. Kreuziger became sole proprietor. He continued to operate them until about two years ago when be removed to Waterloo, where his time is absorbed in looking after his manufacturing interests. Since that time his son, Mr. E. W. Kreuziger, has had entire control and been operating the establishment here. The latter was born in Heidelberg in 1869. He had a thorough training in the business, and is therefore fully competent to give satisfaction to the large number of patrons that yearly drive up to the doors of the establishment.

This mill is a large three story structure including basement. It has thirteen sets of rolls, with a capacity for turning out daily one hundred and fifty barrels choice family flour. The reputation of these mils for turning out a first-class article and doing honest custom work has been established since they began operations. Outside of the custom work, a very large amount of his mill's product, of which there are several popular bands, Mr. Kreutziger ships to different points in the Maritime Province, and a good deal of it is sent to the old country. All the wheat that comes in is purchased and the highest cash price is paid.

In addition to the flour mills Mr. Kreuziger's operates a saw mill, which during the season is a great convenience to the farmers and those who need lumber and have logs to convert into that commodity. The grist mill contains a one-hundred horse-power engine, but the overhauling it is receiving and the new machinery being put in will not require that amount of power. This will be a great advantage, economically, as the gyrators, of which there will be three, do far more satisfactory work and are constructed on such principles as to require far less power. The mills will very likely be in operation again in the course of two or three weeks, and the new improvements will undoubtedly make amends for the apparent set-back business has experienced here during the suspension While Mr. Kreuziger's time is taken up in office business, he has a first-class miller employed, that gentleman being Mr. Noah Bowman.

The fact that Heidelberg has some very handsome homes is not to be disputed, for one must travel some distance before seeing a finer residence and grounds than those belonging to the Kreuziger estate.

The Bell Telephone and G. N. W. Telegraph office are located in the office of this mill, and where communication can be had with all parts of the world.
