    WM. BEATTIE.

The village contains only one mercantile establishment, but it is apparently adequate to supply all needs of the villagers and farmers in the immediate vicinity. In this establishment is located the post office and the Bell Telephone. In the latter the village has communication with all important points. Mr. Wm. Beattie is the proprietor and manager of this establishment, and for one without competition, is very accommodating and obliging to all who visit his store for the purchase of merchandise or have mail to receive and send. Like many others, he has had misfortunes to contend with, and especially in regard to precarious health, having on several occasions stood the test of painful and delicate operations. But he is apparently still in the ring and his jovial disposition would indicate to the stranger not acquainted with the facts, that he is a physically sound man. In addition to his mercantile business, Mr. Beattie is quite a poultry fancier, being a breeder of white Plymouth Rocks, light Brahmas, black Langshans and silver-laced Wyandots. His light Brahmas are the finest lot of birds I have had the pleasure of inspecting for many a day. He has certainly a number of fine prize winners. During my visit he disposed of several pullets of the latter breed at a handsome figure to Mr. Wixon, travelling representative of the Massey- Harris Co. Mr. Beattie has been in business here about nine years, having given up farming on account of ill health. He has purchased an incubator with a capacity of 100 eggs, and will try his luck hatching chicks by the wholesale.

Death of a Former Resident of Puslinch

Word was sent to Mr. Stirton, Postmaster of the death of William Beattie of West Dumfries, early Thursday morning, in his 69th year. He will be remembered by the older residents of Guelph and Puslinch as the eldest son of Francis Beattie, who settled in Puslinch in the year 1835. After he grew up, he farmed for a good many years in Puslinch and about twenty years ago, moved to Waterloo County, where he continued farming. He had been failing for some time but last Saturday, he was seized with paralysis, which gradually spread all over the body. He was of a quiet, kindly disposition, scrupulously honest and honourable in all his dealings and was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and nine children all of whom were present at his death except one daughter and two sons. One of his sons, Rev. Andrew Beattie is a Presbyterian minister in New York City. Mr. Beattie was buried on Saturday.

Mr. Beattie came from Scotland in 1834, and after spending some time in the employ of the Messrs. Ferrie, at Doon, took up a farm in Puslinch, on which he resided for some years. He then removed to another farm, which he purchased near Kossuth, leaving which, he purchased the farm on which he died, and on which he has resided for nineteen years. Mr. Beattie was in his 60th year. He leaves a widow and ten children, eight sons and two daughters, viz. - Francis, farmer, near Blair; John, agent of the Ingersoll Manufacturing Company; William, farmer, town-line, Waterloo; Revd. Andrew Beattie, Pastor of Church of Sea and Land, New York City; Robert, of Lakeport, California; Hugh, residing on the homestead; David, teacher, Crosshill; Mrs. James Kersell, Santa Clara, Cal.; and Mrs. Isaac Clemens, of Newton, Mornington Township.

Mr. Beattie has been in rather poor health for some time. On Friday last he attended the funeral of Mr. Thos. Residence:
It is not known just when the first log meeting house of the Hallman congregation was built. However, on June 1, 1847 a one-acre plot of land, for a meeting house and burial ground, was deeded from Adam Unger to trustee, Jacob H. Detweiler. This land was east of Roseville on the northwest corner of Lot 31, Concession 11 of North Dumfries Township, and on the south side of the Blenheim or Roseville Road, which was built westerly from Galt. A stone cairn made up of old tombstones stands on this property today.1a
