JACKSON, JANE (Nee McDonald. previously Glendinning)

In Guelph, on Wednesday evening, 1st September 1897, in her 79th year, from an affection of the heart. Relict of John Jackson. She had lived in Guelph and Galt for over fifty years, chiefly in Guelph and was most highly esteemed for her industry, hospitality and great kindness of heart. She was born in Greenock, Scotland and came, when a girl, to this country. She married in Montreal to Charles Glendenning and after living at Montreal, at Baie des Chaleurs, Chatham and Galt, they came to Guelph in the early 1850's. They conducted a saloon and restaurant on the Market Square, first at Henry's corner and then, where the Bell Brick Factory stands. Mrs. Jackson was noted, in those days, for her skill as a manager and as a caterer.

They subsequently took up a small farm in Puslinch, beyond McCrae's, where Mr. Glendenning died. She married John Jackson, who died nearly seven years ago and moved to Galt. About 1871, they returned to Guelph and in 1873, secured the nice property on Grange Street, which has been their home since. Mrs. Jackson was energetic and outspoken but exceedingly kind to many. Having no children of her own, she adopted and brought up nephews and nieces and others, who have cause to remember her with affection. She leaves a half brother, Peter McDonald, who lived with her. Funeral from her residence on Grange St. on Friday at 2.
