l Have a Dream! After World War ll, John Gotdi, was a disenchanted civil servant in Switzerland. By 1950 he had two more children after Hans, Heidi, and Fred. He dreamed of a better life for them in a land far from the sectarian strife of war-torn Europe.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS BEFORE CANADA

His private passion was raising champion chickens as a hobby, in an enclosure behind the apartment buitding in which his family lived. His prize Mechelners won awards all over Switzerland for their laying prowess. Hardly a picture was taken in those post-war years which didn't feature chickens, chickens with kids, or kids with chickens. Below with Hans (John), who does not seem to be contemplating a career in the chicken business. Slowly a dream to turn his hobby into a profession became an obsession to move to Canada which was advertising itself as the perfect place for men of means who had initiative, were independent, self-reliant, and who were willing to work in agriculture like John Goldi clearly was. Above and right Hans (John), the otdest, Heidi and Fred, posed for their studio portraits taken in their "going to Canada" out?ts. ....

Albert Selling: Because of John Goldi's reputation as a breeder of champion chickens, famous Elmira chicken mogut Albert Semng, sponsored him to Canada, and John went to work for him for a few months in a hatchery Albert bought hockey sticks for Fred and John, who learned the national sport of their new country on the streets of Elmira. Though Aibert had tried his best, neither John or Fred made it to the NHL. (But Albert's grandson Rod, who was six years old, at the time, did. With typical modesty he always said he learned everything he knew from the Goldi boys.) But wage employment was not what Dad wanted. So he bought a farm with his lite sayings. Aberfeldy Dream Farm: Goldi brought his family to a farm at Aberfeldy, between London and Chatham, in February 1950 .....

PATENTS ARE VALID ON EGG INCUBATION
U.S. Companies and Govern- ment Both Fail in Court Suits

Ottawa, January 30. The Exchequer Court today handed down two judgments in which it held Canadian patents of both the Smith Incubator Company, of Cleveland. Ohio, and of Albert Seiling, of Elmira, Ont., for incubation of eggs are valid.

Rulings of the court mean the Government lost in its efforts to have the American company's patent declared invalid while the Smith Company and its licensee, the Buck-eye Incubator Company of Springfield, O., failed in its action attacking the validity of the, Seiling patent. It was intimated following the judgments the battle may be carried by appeal of the Government to Supreme Court of Can- ada. In broad terms, the two inven- tions differ in the application of heat and air.

Approximately 1,000 hatcheries are operating in Canada. About 700 utilize the Smith or Seiling makes of incubators, patents on which the court adjudged valid. The remainder use methods covered by some 10 other Canadian incubator patents, whose validity validity has not been challenged so far before the courts. Proceedings were instituted in the Exchequer Court some months ago by the Smith and Buckeye companies against Seiling on the strength of a decision they obtained in the United States Supreme Court last January against an American patentee.

The Canadian Government then hand stepped in and and launched an action to have declared invalid the Smith patent which has only five years. to run in Canada. Action of the Government was taken on representations of Canadian hatchery operators they were being pressed to use incubators covered by the Smith patent.

In a lengthy judgment in the action of the Government against the Smith Incubator Company and the Buckeye Incubator Company seeking to have the Smith patent declared invalid, Justice Angers reviewed the claims of invention in the Smith patent issued by the Canadian Patent Office, April 18, 1922. He concluded: "However it may be, I have, not unhesitatingly I must admit, reached the conclusion, based on the evidence adduced before me, that the patent in suit is valid.

"There will be judgment declaring the patent valid and dismissing the action." Rejecting the suit of the Smith and Buckeye Companies claiming infringement by Seiling of the Smith patent, Justice Angers in this judgment said in part: "The method used by the defendant for the circulation of heated air in the incubator and the tilting of the eggs is, as I have pointed out, quiet different.

"I fail to see any infringement by the defendant (Seiling) of Patent No. 217,777 (the Smith patent) and there will in consequence be judgment dismissing the action...

The Seiling patent was issued by the Canadian Patent Office April 7, 1931.

ALBERT SEILING LOSES VALUABLE BEAGLE HOUND

Mr. Albert Seiling who sometime ago shipped three of his valuable Beagle hounds to the States for trial runs last month received a telegram from Windsor on Friday, telling him that one of his dogs was dead and the other two were sick and that they would be shipped from Windsor on Friday noon. On October 12th Mr. Seiling shipped his dogs to Windsor and from there, they were to be reshipped to Chippawa Lake, Ohio, to run in the Derby, but thru some unavoidable reason they were too late for this trial run. They were then shipped to Allegam, Mich., and entered in the Wolverine trials and altho the dogs were sick, one of them won a silver cup and the other the Reserve Prize. However, their condition was so bad that their caretaker thought it advisable to cancel the Western trials at Bass Lake, Ind., and the Canadian National at Windsor. Mr. Seiling will take good care of the two remaining dogs and bring them back into good running shape again.

Mr. Peter Musselman, The former was one of the pioneers of this part of the county, and by industry and thrift he succeeded in hewing out of the wilds a good home for his old age. His death took place last Thursday and on Sunday his remains were laid to rest in Martin's cemetery, to which nearly 60 rigs followed, and where many more were waiting who could not cross the Grand river from the east. Needless to say he was a staunch Reformer and a true follower of that religious denomination the Old Mennonites. He leave an aged widow, 8 children and a number of brothers and sisters to mourn his departure. He reached the age of nearly fourscore years.

    PETER M MUSSELMAN.

This venerable citizen, who was born October 7tb, 1825, is the second offspring of the late David Musselman, who was the first white man to cross the Conestogo river to the north in this section. He was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came to the banks of the Conestogo in 1819, on the farm where Mr. David Koch now resides. He died October 25, 1870, in the 81st year of his age. The mother was the daughter of Peter and Anna Martin. She was born in Lancaster County, Pa., August 29, 1803, and died July 31st, 1872. They had thirteen children.

The subject of this sketch was born October 7, 1825, and was joined in matrimony to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Magdalena Snider, in 1847. The latter was born April 2, 1829. Ever since they were married they have been residing where they now live, and are the parents of eleven children. Mr. Musselman's farm is part of the old tract first purchased by his father and contains 232 acres, being lot 42 Here he settled in 1847, and where he and his wife have incessantly labored until a few years ago they rested from their labors to enjoy the fruits thereof in the latter years of their lives. Mr. Musselman is now in his seventy-third year, and while, on account of rheumatic affliction, he is debarred from performing heavy labor, can walk all over his farm without experiencing much fatigue. Like many others of his class he has experienced the rough side of life as well as the smooth.
