    HERITAGE, THOMAS

Sudden Death of An Old Resident

Of Puslinch, near Hespeler, very suddenly, on Wednesday, May 2, 1883, aged 72 years, 9 months. He was working at the barn in the morning as usual, when Archie McAlister, with whom he was living, went to work in the field. Mr. McAlister had been only a few minutes at his work, when word came that there was something the matter with Mr. Heritage. He at once proceeded to the house but the old man was insensible and died three hours later. It appears that, when Mr. McAlister left him to go to the field, Mr. Heritage finished the job he was at, put the tools he had been using in their accustomed place and started for the house but fell upon the way but got up and reached the house. His wife, seeing something wrong, asked him what was the matter, when he answered "I am done for. " and never spoke again. Mr. Heritage was a kind-hearted, conscientious man without an enemy in the world. Interred in Hespeler.

HERITAGE, CHRISTINA (Nee Ramsay, formerly McAllister)

We are again called upon to chronicle the death of one of the old pioneers of Puslinch, in the person of Mrs. Thomas Heritage, who died at her residence, "Green Hill Farm", on Tuesday, 26th January, 1904, aged 91 years; and 6 months. She had been in her usual health until about Christmas, when she took the grippe and was not strong enough to battle with the grim foe. Mrs. Heritage was very much respected by all her friends, both young and old. She was of a quiet disposition but a friend to all and was generous and kind to those in need and no person was turned away hungry from her door. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and many a time, she walked to Knox's Church Galt, when Dr. Bayne was the pastor, there being no church in Hespeler when she came from Scotland in 1832. Mrs. Heritage, whose maiden name was Christina Ramsay was twice married. Her first husband was John McAlister. She and John were married at Campbelltown on March 1, 1832 and sailed for Canada in April of the same year in the ship, Postaferry, landing in Hamilton six or seven weeks later. They lived in Hamilton until the January of the following year, when they left there and walked to Puslinch, stopping at houses on the road (Hugh McColl in Beverly). They stopped at Alex Lamont's on lot 10, Puslinch and stayed there for three or four weeks. They, at length, settled on lot 6, Puslinch, put up a shanty and commenced clearing a home for themselves. After the place was cleared, Mr. McAlister did not live long to enjoy it. John got sick, while visiting his sister, Mrs. Alex Addison in Galt and died at her home on November 1, 1848, leaving his widow and six small children. She remained a widow for eight years and her family had grown to be stalwart young men and women. In 1856, she married Thomas Heritage of Doddington, Oxfordshire, England. He died in 1883, leaving one daughter, who remained with her mother until her death. When Mrs. Heritage first came to lot 6, it was all a forest and it was a very lonely life for the young wife, who could hear the wolves howling and see the bears sneaking among the timbers. The deer also were very plentiful and would come and feed with the cows in the pasture. She once tried to shoot a deer but missed her aim and the deer fled to the woods. At that time there were no stores in Hespeler and they had to go to Galt to do their trading. Mrs. Heritage would walk to Galt and carry a basket of butter and eggs, get her groceries, and walk back home, the road at the time leading past the old Shaw homestead. One day when she was going to Galt, she met a large black bear on the path. She thought she was done for but setting her basket down, she clapped her hands and halloed and the bear took fright and ran into the woods. On another occasion, the wolves were chasing the calves in the pasture and they let a large yoke of oxen in the field and the wolves were quickly driven off but the calves were badly torn. She was born at Killeden (or Kilcaden?), Argyleshire in October 1812. The families are Archibald and Alexander McAlister on the old homestead; Mrs. Clark of Sidney, MB; Mrs. G. Y. Heritage of Bloomington III. ; Mrs. J. L. Maude of Peterborough; Mrs. William Maude of Galt; and Martha at home. The family were all by her bedside with the exception of Mrs. Clark. The funeral on Thursday from her residence to Hespeler Cemetery was conducted by Rev. K. J. MacDonald. Pallbearers: J. Small, J. R. Dalzell, A. Ramsay, all of Galt; J. D. Ramsay of Hespeler; W. Maude of Fergus; and J. Maude of Toronto.

    - Information from Knox Presbyterian Church, Crieff, 1840-1990 by Anna Jackson; The six children were Archibald married Charlotte Gibson; Alexander; Elizabeth (Mrs. James Clark); Christina (Mrs. George Heritage); Jane (Mrs. James Maude) and Johnann (Mrs. William Maude), who was born after her father's death. Mrs. McAllister later married Thomas Heritage and they had a daughter, Martha, who married William Young and was active in the Ellis Chapel congregation.
