    Died at Ripe Old Age
Mrs. Thos. Miller Passed Over to the Silent Majority

Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson, relict of the late Thos. Miller, died at her residence, 22 King St., about one o'clock Wednesday morning. The deceased lady was in the 88th year of her age, and of late has broken down under the infirmities of old age. Since December last, Mrs. Miller, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Curry, was born in Dumfries-shire, Scotland. In 1832 the year in which the cholera was so epidemical throughout Europe - she emigrated to this country with her husband, Paul Nelson, the subject of this sketch being married at the age of twenty. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson had two children on arriving in Canada. They settled in North Dumfries, which was at that time little better than a wilderness. The life of the deceased in those years was full of interest and excitement. On her way here she met with an accident in one of the canals of Canada whereby her right hand was badly smashed. Mrs. Miller would also tell stirring tales of how, time and time again, she had gone to the door of her home and in defense of herself and family, frightened the prowling wolves away with a brand snatched from the cabin fire place.

Mr. Nelson met with an accident a few years afterwards, his death resulting from a blow which he sustained while digging at the bottom of a well. The subject of this sketch was left a widow with seven children - five sons and two daughters - the oldest child at that time being only 13 years. Deceased continued to reside in North Dumfries after her husband's death. The surviving sons are Wm. Nelson, in Normanby Township; Robert and John in Egremont Tp., and Paul in Glenelg Tp. Some years after Mrs. Nelson married Mr. Thomas Miller, a well-to-do farmer of Cedar Creek. By this union one daughter was born Jessie, now the wife of Joseph Mills, Galt. Mr. Miller died over 24 years ago, leaving the subject of this sketch once more a widow. Since then she has resided the greater part of the time in Galt. In addition to the children whose names are already mentioned, several grandchildren are left, three of whom reside in Galt. Deceased, who was a lady widely esteemed and much beloved, was in her early days a member of the old Kirk church. Latterly she joined the Central Presbyterian and a few years ago cast in her lot with the United Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will take place today at 3:30 o'clock the Mount/View cemetery.
