Woolner.-Pre. Jacob Woolner was born on Sept. 25, 1826; died Oct. 6, 1917; aged 91 y. 11 d. He was born in St. Andrew's parish, Suffolk County, England, and emigrated to Canada with his parents in the year 1832, arriving in Waterloo Co., on June 28, where his mother soon died of the cholera. On May 14, 1848, he was baptized and received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Church. On May 30, 1867, he was called to the ministry in which capacity he served the Church as long as health permitted him to do so and was an earnest laborer to help spread the Gospel to all until his end came. He was the oldest minister in the Ontario Conference, being ordained over 50 years ago. On the 30th of May, 1849, he was married with Hannah Shiedel. To this union were born 6 sons and 4 daughters, 2 of whom died in infancy. His first wife died in March, 1897, and in May, 1899, he was united in marriage with Nancy Kramp (whose maiden name was Reist). She died on Apr. 23, 1913. There remain to mourn his loss 5 sons, 46 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral was held on Oct. 9. Services at the house conducted by Bro. Noah Stauffer and at the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by the Brethren Jonas Snider and U. K. Breslau (Cressman) Mennonite Church

Services were begun in Breslau in 1815. In 1834, Benjamin Eby's log meeting house, which had been built in Berlin in 1813, was moved to Breslau to the Cressman farm. Preaching services which were held every four weeks began in the reconstructed meeting house in 1837. A new brick church was built in 1856, at which time the old log meeting house was moved to Frederick Schaefer's brickyard. The old building may have been used for storage or an office until approximately 1880 when it was clad with white "Breslau Brick" from the brickyard, and used as a home by Frederick Schaefer and his family. The address of the house is reported to have been 18 Woolwich Street; it was still standing in 1985, according to Alder 1985, with the original log walls possibly preserved within the brick ones.

A summer Sunday School was begun in June of 1872. It was held in the Breslau schoolhouse until 1877 when it was moved to the church. Sunday School continued on in the summers only until 1889 when Sunday School classes began to be held all year.

The 1856 white brick church was taken down in March 1908, and was replaced with a new white brick church. In 1968 the name of the church was changed from Cressman Mennonite Church to Breslau Mennonite Church. Major renovations were made to the church in the same year. It is of interest to know that land amounting to approximately three acres was deeded to the congregation by Christian C. Snyder in three parcels, in 1837, 1859, and 1870.

Joseph Hagey, the first minister at Cressman's, was ordained on February 10, 1839. He was ordained bishop in 1851. Ministers who followed him in serving the church at Breslau were Jacob Woolner Sr., Elias Weber, Isaac A. Wambold, Jacob S. Woolner, and Oscar Burkholder. Services were held every four weeks from 1837-1867, and bi-weekly from 1867-1894 when weekly services were begun

They were engaged in hauling stone, and, driving through marshy ground where the wheels of the wagon turned up wild parsnips. The younger took up some of the roots, and ate them, and also induced his brother to eat some; and in an hour and a half they were both dead, having been poisoned thereby. They were buried on the 28th. A large concourse of people were present, so that there was not room for them in the house. The funeral sermons were, therefore, delivered by Joseph Hegy and John Bear in the grave yard. ELIAS SNYDER.

    Death of Henry Snider

The old pioneers of this district are fast passing from the scene of action. Another one was laid away on Wednesday morning in the person of Henry S. Snider, who died on Monday morning. Deceased came to this part of the country when it was yet a wild waste of woodland. By hard work he cleared away the forest and became possessed of a fruitful and well-cultivated farm, besides securing farms for his sons. He was of a reserved and quiet disposition and seldom came to town during the last few years of his life. Death was due to old age -- the candle was burnt out. Deceased leaves a widow, three sons, namely Joshua living near Elora, Reuben on the Elias Eby farm, and Paul at home; four daughters, namely Katie married to Elias Bricker of Okotoka, Alberta, and Magdalena, Lavina and Angeline. The interment took place on Wednesday forenoon in presence of a large number of relatives, friends and neighbors.

Henry married Mary Ann Snyder 23 Dec 1851, Greenbush (Kitchener), Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Mary (daughter of Benjamin Snyder, Sr. and Catharine G. Another Pioneer Gone

The old pioneers of Woolwich are disappearing from the scene of action. Another one passed away, on Thursday is the person of Elias B. Eby of Floradale neighborhood.

The Eby family are of Celtic origin; After the founding of the Mennonite body they united with the, and as early as 1683, we find one Jacob Eby ordained bishop in Zurich, Switzerland. The ancestor of the Ebys of the country was Theodorus Eby who came to Pennsylvania in 1715. His grandson, David Eby, came to Canada in 1807, and later settled north of Waterloo where the subject of this sketch was born on the 19th September, 1829. On December 11th 1853 he was married to Rachel Shantz. They settled on the farm a mile south-west of Floradale when it was all bush but 10 acres. Their first house was 14 ft. by 16 ft. in size with one window containing 4 panes of 8 by 10 inches. The roof was made of hollowed out basswood logs. But through the beginning brought hardships, Mr. and Mrs. Eby were undaunted, and with industry and economy became possessed of one of the finest farms in the Township. And to the original farm they added several others so that their children when they grew up, had a fairly good start in life. Deceased lived on the old farm until his death, with the exception of a few years that he lived in Floradale, where his wife died about six years ago.

To Mr. and Mrs. Eby were born 12 children, one of whom died before his parents. The living are: Absolom, of Elmira; Susannah (Mrs. Reuben Snider) now living on the old Eby homestead; Jesse, living in the Northwest; Reuben, near Winfield; Amos, near Floradale; Noah, of Winnipeg; Hannah (Mrs. Enoch Burkhart) Jacob, of Didsbury, Alberta, Rebecca (Mrs. Noah Good); of Floradale; Elias of New Haven, Conn., Rachel (Mrs. Emerson Morrison), of Didsbury, Alta.; Besides these there are 54 grandchildren, so that there is not much danger of the Eby family dying out yet.

One sister of deceased, namely Mrs. Samuel Snider, also survives him. Deceased was of a retiring disposition and a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand where such was needed. The funeral will be held this (Saturday) forenoon, and will without doubt be largely attended.
