    Notes:

James Anderson was born in the north of Ireland in 1828, served four years in the Irish Constabulary between the ages of 18 and 22, learned the carriage making trade in Ireland where his father and two brothers were joiners (Carpenters) and then he came to Caledonia, Ontario, where he worked at his trade for some time. In the old days, Blacksmiths, Waggon Makers, Saw Millers and others, like the farmers, hired help for so much a month (or week) and board. When J. N. Cober was running his carriage shop in Puslinch, six men employed by him, boarded in his house. On the River Road south from Breslau almost across the road from the Joseph B. Hagey farm a man named Ryan ran a blacksmith shop with a wood shop in connection. His employees, I have no doubt, boarded at his house. Needing a wood worker, he contacted in some way, James Anderson, who came to work for him probably around 1860.

Mr. Anderson married Hannah Ryan and their first child was born in 1862. Anderson's name does not appear as owner or tenant nor on the Statute Labour list in Hespeler until 1866 in which year he is shown as tenant of a house owned by Louis Englehart on Queen East and as owner of a quarter of an acre of land on Cooper Street assessed for $300.00. That means there must have been a building on the land, for, in those days vacant lots were more apt to be priced at $300.00 a dozen than apiece! Highly improbable, I should say, that Hannah, then a girl around 20 would have met her future husband as far afield as Caledonia. More likely she was at home helping with the house work and Jimmie met her there.

As 1 reconstruct it, Anderson, while still working for Ryan, heard that Wiffler was dead and that his shop was for sale and he came here and bought it in 1865 or early 1866. In any event he carried on business there until 1886 when he sold out to Aaron Groh and retired. He died January 31st, 1913; His wife, on December 28th, 1907, aged 67 years, 8 months. I have it from the family that Mr. Anderson worked at the waggon making trade for 26 years which would mean that he came to Ryan in 1860, give or take a bit.

Among the men employed in that shop in the times of Charles Wiffler and James Anderson may be mentioned David Fields, 1862-64; Thomas Trimble, 1864; Henry Shoemaker, 1866; Jonathan Mager (Brother of Mrs. Solomon Keifer), 1867-74; Dilman Kraft, 1868; Wellington Morne, 1870, and William Parks who learned his trade with Anderson.
