Revolting Case - To the Editor of the Hamburg Volksblatt

For the sake of morality I consider myself, as an eye-witness, bound to draw the attention to an individual who resides in New Hamburg, and is called Jacob Kloss (or "the Hamburg Bull.") He is a saddler by trade, father of a large family, and already advanced in years; he is, as much as I know, not given to drinking, but several times already he has been surprised when he tried to violate girls from 7 to 14 years of age. Till now, strange to say, he got off only with a thrashing by the parents of the children, and has not been brought before the court to get the legal punishment as no person appeared as plaintiff against him.

Sunday, the 11th inst., this monster rambled about Wilby from morning till afternoon, and at the time when the adult persons had left the place to go to church, watched for little girls, and tried to mislead them to remote places, in order to commit infamous actions on their persons. An unfortunate girl, Elizabeth Ullner, 14 years of age, residing near Wilby, let herself be misled by this rascal, and went with him into the bush, and as I observed both unseen, I followed them and surprised them in acts of bareness which cannot be publicly described. I gave this beast of a man a sound thrashing, and think it my duty to publish this horrible occurrence in the newspapers. - Daniel Lohr - Wilby, September 12, 1859

    Notes:

The revolution in Baden broke ou't actively in the latter part of 1848, and continued until toward the end of 1849. One of the main leaders was Carl Hecker, supported by Strube and Brentano, members of the diet. The Grand-duke Leopold fled to Prussia and secured the help of Prince William, grand-father of the present Kaiser, who at the head of a Prussian force invaded Baden in 1849, and defeated the insurgents. It may be interest ing to state here that with the Prussians were Hesse and Nassau soldiers, among whom were John Ulner, who lived here and worked for me in Wellesley for almost half a century and the late Christian Meisner of Kitchener. Hecker, after one of his sharp shooters had killed the Prussian general, during a parley, escaped to Switzerland and from there emigrated to Illinois where he died some years ago. I drilled on the side of the republicans under Hecker in 1849, but was not in any of the engagements.
