FATAL ACCIDENT.--On Monday forenoon the village was thrown into a a state of excitement by the occurrence of one of the saddest accidents Dundee has seen for many days. Mr. Moses Hunsberger in the morning left home a hale and hearty man, leaving his family in the usual good spirits, but was taken back at noon & stiffened icy corpse. He had taken a daughter to a farmer near Ayr and was returning home, when, about 11.30 as he was driving down Benjamin street, opposite Rev. E. Gruetzner's, the front axle broke. The buggy dropped striking" the horse's heel, and the infuriated beast. dashed madly down the street turning past Poth's shop, dragging the buggy and its unfortunate occupant. It sharply turned Chipman's corner towards the black bridge. This turn, so short and made at a break-neck speed, hurled Mr. Hunsberger head-first against the frozen bank. He was at once carried into Poth's shop and Dr. Miliar was immediately summoned. All assistance was in vain, however. He showed no signs of life except a light breathing until shortly after one o'clock when he expired. The family had promptly been called. His wife arrived in time to see her husband breathe his last. He leaves a widow and 5 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters. He was about 56 years old and died a member of the Mennonites. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family.

    Notes:

Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"

    Notes:

Christian Schenider, "was born August 28th, 1758. In 1789 he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Maria (Scherch) Erb (See No. 2777). She was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 23rd, 1770, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, September 29th, 1818. In 1806 they, in company with others, emigrated to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, near where now is the village of Doon. Here he resided for a number of years. It was his intention to construct a dam across the creek flowing through his plantation and have a grist mill erected thereon. But in order to have the desired "head of water" he found that the "back water" would flood a few acres of Mr. Biehn's swamp adjoining that of his (Mr. Schneider's) property, This, although worth nothing, or comparatively little, Mr. Biehn would not sell to Mr. Schneider and thus prevented the building of a grist mill. Mr. Schneider died August 6th, 1850, leaving a family of eleven children"
