Death of a Well Known Resident

There passed away the residence of her son-in-law, William Ira Anderson of the Clyde Road in Beverly, on Tuesday, in her 76th year. Wife of James S. Hogg. With her father, the late Archibald Ramsay, she came to this section from Campbelltown, Argyleshire, Scotland in 1841, the family first settling on the farm on Mill Creek, now occupied by Mr. Me Allister on the 1st concession. A few years after their arrival here, she married Mr. Hogg, and since then, up to a few months ago when failing health made it desirable she should have the care and attention of her daughter, Mrs. Anderson with whom she and her husband have resided, they have been continuous residents. Of the original family, only three are now left, Mrs. Matthew McPhatter, Mrs. Andrew D. Gibson and Mrs. Thomas Heritage, all widely known and respected in this section. Mrs. Hogg's family consisted of four sons and three daughters, of whom all the sons are living except Archibald, whose unfortunate death by accident on the railway, near Preston, will be remembered. The family is scattered, Francis R. , being engaged in lumbering at Parry Harbour, Parry Sound; James George, residing at Teherne, Man, Edward of New York; Mrs. Peter Campbell of Forest, Ontario; and Mrs. Anderson of the Clyde Road. One daughter, Mrs. Henry Van Meter died a number of years ago in Beverly.

The deceased was a most worthy woman in every walk of life and was most justly respected by all and beloved by many. Up to about a year ago, she enjoyed good health but then the failing of life set in and since, there has been a gradual weakening, with suffering borne with great Christian fortitude and patience. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to Mount View Cemetery, her body being attended to its last resting place by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.

    Notes:

The men who took the most prominent part in organizing the first library in the village were: Rev. Dr. Bayne, Alexander Burnet, James Cowan, John Gowinlock, William Trotter, H. G. Barlow, James Harris, Andrew Elliott, Francis McElroy, Francis Hogg, Andrew Moscrip and Walter H. Benn. These men have long since passed away, but they all did good work in their day in laying the foundations of a progressive and moral community; to the older generation of Galtonians their names call up a crowd of memories of the days that are no more.

We learn from Mr. William Cowan, River Road, that the following well-known Dumfries families all sailed in the "Argus" of Workington, England, on the 3rd June, 1829: those of Francis Hogg, Walter Cowan, James Cowan, George Barrie and Hector Rennelson. The voyage was only nine weeks and two days!
