    Death of an old Pioneer
Mr. William Hunsperger, resident of district for 28 years, died last Friday.

Gradually the men and women who came here when conditions were absolutely in a raw state in the Didsbury district and by their hard work and unselfish giving of themselves lay down the foundations for a prosperous community by passing out of sight, and with the passing of each one of these old pioneers leave a gap amongst those of us who came in the early years which seemed almost impossible to fill.

It is our unfortunate duty this week to again record the death of one of those old pioneers in the person of Mr. William Hunsperger a man by his life of unswervingly loyalty to the to the district and community and his integrity and outstanding faith in the better things have left us an example that will be hard to follow.

Mr. Hunsperger, although of quiet disposition was always cherry and had a good word for everyone. He came to this district 28 years ago when there were mighty few settlers scattered over a large territory and consequently above he and Mrs. Hunsperger knew what real pioneering meant in the last great west. But through good times and bad they never gave up and they always gave a helping hand wherever they saw the need of it. For some years Mister Hunsperger was president of the Didsbury Agricultural Society and was also a very valuable counsellor, being one of the first to be elected to that position when the town was incorporated. He also held the position of J. P. During the war and was postmaster in the spring of 1912, which position he held until sickness over took him.

Deceased was born near New Dundee, Ontario, and 1816, being a little over 76 years of age. He was married in 1868 to Miss Catherine Schluchter from which Union three sons and two daughters were born, Allan, Abner and Alvin, of Didsbury and Mrs. E. Sherrick, Didsbury and Mrs. M, Ryckman, Chilliwack, B. C. and 21 grandchildren.

There were ten brothers and sisters of Mr. Hunsperger all are now dead with the exception of Mr. Ben Hunsperger of Chilliwack, B. C. and Mr. Aaron Hunsperger, of New Dundee, Ontario.

Mr. Hunsperger took a very active interest in the church work right up to the time of his death being a member of that Evangelical Church for over 50 years during which time he has several Offices, amongst them being trustee, class teacher and Sunday school superintendent.

The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon last and was the largest fitted ever took place in Didsbury, crowds of people being unable to get into the services at either the house or the church and, and the very large display a beautiful wreaths and bouquets testified silently eloquently to the esteem in which Mr. Hunsperger was held. Rev. Mr. Dengis, pastor of the Evangelical Church, had charge of the services assisted by Rev. Mr. Gowdie, Reverend Mr. Traub, and Reverend Mr. Bender. Reverend Mr. Gowdie, a very old friend of the family, preached the sermon at the church while M. Dengis spoke briefly at the home and church. Interment the place in the Didsbury Cemetery.

Mrs. Hunsperger senior and the family have the sincerest sympathy of the whole District in their loss of a loving husband and kind father and the district Mourns the passage of a wise counsellor and kind friend.

Flowers and wreaths were received from the following, R. B. Bennett, Calgary, large wreath, Geo. Cloakey, Calgary, spray Mr. and Mrs. Otto and Mr. and Mrs. Harderer, Cremona, spray, Mr. and Mrs. Ridd, Botteril, wreath, Mr. and Mrs. B. Hunsperger and children, cross, Mrs. Stevens, Lacombe, spray post office staff, wreath, Mr and Mrs W. J. Hillyard, cross from the family a cross

    Notes:

Benjamin Hallman, "was born September 18th, 1783, in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as his calling. During the great financial depressions from 1816 until 1827 many of that calling in Montgomery and other counties failed financially, and in order to save their creditors from losing any money, the distressed farmers sold their farms at a great sacrifice and paid their debts, and with whatever little balance left they wended their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. And as a rule all these parties in a very few years were the possessors of valuable farms. Such was the case with Benjamin Hallman, our Canadian progenitor. He suffered financially during the great crisis as aforesaid, and, finding things to his advantage, he moved to Canada in 1825 (See page 56 for more information) and settled in Waterloo County, two miles west of the town of Waterloo. Here he resided until spring (1826) when he moved to North Dumfries Township, about one mile east of Roseville, where he had purchased a most beautiful farm, then nearly all forest. This farm is now in possession of Menno H. Hallman. Here the old progenitor died full of years, September 10th, 1869. On September 2nd, 1802, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Detweiler. She was born August 8th, 1784, and died August 9th, 1856. To them was born a numerous family, all of which were born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, save the two youngest, Hannah and Wendel, who were born in Waterloo County, Ontario"
