    Notes:

    Death of Mr. John Crane

After months of weary suffering, this well-known and respected citizen of Galt passed away on Sabbath morning last n the 88th year of his age.

Mr. Crane was born in Huntingfield, Sussex, England, in the year 1798. He remained n England until the year 1832, when in company with his son John and Mr. George Barber, he came out to Canada. He at first took up his residence with Mr. Mickleborough on a farm near Preston, but only remained there a short time. He then moved to Galt, where his family joined him from England; and after residing some short time on North Water street he built the house on Cameron street in which he died. His aged partner in life predeceased him some seven years, dying in the year 1879.

The subject of this notice was humble, unassuming citizen, filling the place assigned to him in the great mystery of life with honesty and to the best of his ability. Those who knew him intimately felt that his only desire was to do his duty to his neighbor as well as to himself. He was almost an enthusiast regarding the planting of trees, taking particular pride in raising them and setting them out himself; and the fine row of poplars on Cameron street is fitting monument to the old gentleman's efforts in this respect.

Mr. Crane leaves a brother James, residing near Guelph, and a family of five sons and one daughter. Of the sons, George, the eldest, resides in Utah; John resided in Illinois; Harry and William live in Galt; and Charles in Kynosh Co., Utah; the only surviving daughter, Mrs. Milligan, residing with her husband in Illinois. At the time of Mr. Crane's death two daughters survived him; but one \endash Mrs. Jas. McKendirck of this town \endash was on her deathbed, and followed her father to the great unknown on Monday.

On Friday, at noon, a very old and respected resident, in the person of Mrs. John Crane, passed away in the 78th year of her age. She was the mother of a numerous family of whom Messrs. Harry and William, and Mrs. James McKendrick, reside in the town - her sons John and Charles, and her daughter Mrs. Milligan, residing in the United States. Her funeral took place on Sabbath afternoon, and the attendance thereat amply showed the esteem in which she was held. Her aged partner in life still survives her.
