    Notes:

The writer has been accorded the esteemed privilege of requesting the publication of some details in the life of Mary Ann, the beloved wife of Benjamin Bock, of Carnarvon, whose death occurred on the 18th inst. She was a daughter of Henry Woods, a factory operator of Norfolk, England who came to Canada when the subject of our sketch was four years of age and settled with his wife and family at Williamsburg, Waterloo, in 1836, where though new to the work and difficulties facing him by industry and the aid of his family he attained to comfort and affluence before his death. It was there in his early youth the dear lady learned when young to do her duty and which she never neglected through a long life of 77 years. In 1849 she was truly converted to a Christian life. In 1852 she was married to Benjamin Bock and brought him a family of nine children. In 1877 they moved to the Manitoulin Island. Since then few of the old leading residents from end to end of the Island but have been benefited by or heard of her genuine hospitality to all. We are but speaking truth when we say she was modest and unpretending, unmistakably good, always preferring the happiness and welfare of others to herself. Contented and happy with her lot. The darling of her grand children female and male who would not wish a life and death life hers. We will not essay anything to comfort the bereaved husband two years older than his beloved wife. God alone can comfort and lead him till he joins his beloved bride of 57 years ago. The burial in Providence Bay cemetery as was to be expected was largely attended. The Rev. Harvey Fry, Mennonite minister assisted by Rev. John Turnbull, Baptist, and Rev. Mr. Steele, Presbyterian, officiated. All the Ministers spoke with enthusiasm of the death-bed scene of the departed. She had borne her sufferings with Christian resignation. For some days anxious watchers stood by her bedside, suddenly the call came and she exclaimed "Jesus take me". A bright smile overspread her face and she looked her last on earth.

His daughter, Charlotte married Joseph Evans sometime shortly after her arrival in the Waterloo area of Ontario. These are my 2nd great grandparents. A letter cited in your book was written from Charlotte to her brother back in Sussex, England and signed by her husband (Joseph "Neuroke" Evans).

After some delay due to a cholera outbreak in the area, Charlotte and Joseph settled in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario and raised a family. Their first child, Connell, is my great grandfather.

    Notes:

Mr. and Mrs. Tribe, with their family, came from Sussex, England, in the year 1832. Mr. Tribe died during the first winter that the family was in Canada and was buried near Cornell's, on the site of which is now the 'Cress House' in Preston. In this family there were: Benjamin, who married Mary Ann Lepard and lived in Pilkington; Johnathan married Martha Cornell, while Harry and Richard were not married. The daughters were Sarah, who was Mrs. Rapson; Charlotte was Mrs. Evans, and Mary was Mrs. Thomas Irvine, of Paisley, and it was at her home that her mother, Mrs. Tribe, died. Jane Tribe was married in Sussex, England, to Jesse Penfold, who had been a soldier and in service at the City of Quebec about 1814. They, with Mrs. Penfold's parents, came to Canada in 1832.

The home of the 'Tribe' family was first in the township of Dumfries, then the mother and some of the family came to the township of Pilkington and lived in a log house which stood between the road and the river, not quite half way between what is best known as the 'James Ross' farm and Inverhaugh post office.

The members of this, the older Penfold family, children of Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe, were: Matilda, born in Sussex, England, on the same day as Queen Victoria, May 24th, 1819, and came to Canada in 1832. She was married to Thomas Adsett and they lived on a farm on the east side of the river road, which was the next farm south of Mr. Wollis'. They afterwards removed to Guelph, where Mr. Adsett died on April 21st, 1870, at the age of seventy. Mrs. Adsett was again married to the late James Hall, of Winterbourne, and died April 24th, 1896, at the age of seventy six years and ten months. Jesse Penfold married Hannah Wismer; Caroline married Henry Wilbee, a son of Henry Wilbee, of Elora, and now lives in Brussels; Esther, born on board ship in 1832, married Owen Roberts and lived for many years where the Cascade Creek crosses the road near Thomas Cleghorn's farm in Pilkington, but, with a large family, moved to Kansas; Harriet married John Scully and their family all live in Berlin.

Jesse Penfold, son of Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe, was born in Sussex, England, on December 30th, 1823, and with his parents and his mother's parents, came to the township of Dumfries in 1832. He was there married, in 1842, to Hannah Wismer, who was born May 30th, 1825, and died in April, 1903.

In the year 1844, Jesse Penfold took up the farm on which he has lived for sixty-two years, and he was the first settler on the west side of the river, between West Montrose and Elora, which is a distance of eight miles. His farm is known as Lot 64 in the German Company's Tract, west of the Grand River, in the township of Woolwich. Among those in this family there are: Susannah, married Thomas Batters, lives in Saskatchewan; Thomas married Margaret Annette Harvey and lives in Port Arthur; Elizabeth married Jacob B. Hewitt and is now in South Dakota; John married Emma Holzworth and lives on a farm a short distance north from his father's; Phoebe was married to Robert Peel Winfield, and is now living in Elora; Hannah was married to John Mitchell and lives on the 'George Lawrence' farm near the West Montrose school, and Jesse Penfold, jr., married Jessie (Janet) Darby, from Parry Sound, and lives on the old homestead with his father.
