    Notes:

    THE PRINTER OF ROSEVILLE

Louis M. Kaiser at the age of 90 is the oldest active printer in Canada, according to the "Canadian Printer". He has operated a job printing business in Roseville for 65 years and for 50 years in the same building he now occupies. His long association with the Galt Reporter began when he was learning his trade.

Mr. Kaiser is his own press composer and for many years has operated the business by himself. Down through the years he has printed for many firms and he is well known in the printing world. Recently he was made a complimentary life subscriber by the "Canadian Printer and Publisher".

Louis Kaiser lives in the 110 year old family home and operates his presses in a frame cottage of the same age. As a warehouse he uses a stone building which was constructed by his grandfather who lived in it for many years.

Our printer friend acted as bailiff for the Roseville area, and for 25 years performed the duties of a Justice of the Peace. At his advanced age his eyesight is keen, his typesetting touch is sure, and his handwriting is fine and full of character. The Waterloo Historical Society wishes him every happiness in the twilight of his busy life.

    Residence:
This beautiful two storey log home has 4 over 4 window frames, a centered front door facing the road, and a shingled roof. The property used to be the home of the Kaiser family, and they had a printing shop, which has since been torn down. The Schiedel family is currently building an addition on the back of the house.
This log home was only recently 'discovered' when the present owners were replacing the siding on the house, the workers found the wood walls. They decided to simply renovate the original walls, and made the home appear to be as it was when it was originally built. This house was previously owned by Frederick and Louis Kaiser, who came to the Roseville area in 1822 from Pennsylvania. Fred Kaiser's son, Louis Kaiser was a printer and operated a printing shop located on the northeast corner of the property. In his shop, Louis Kaiser employed five men. His grandson, Robert Marshall, remembers as a little boy helping his grandfather deliver invoices in a horse and buggy to various to businesses in Galt. The printing shop also specialized in wedding invitations, funeral cards, and business cards. By the end of his career, Louis Kaiser had worn out five presses. His last press was donated to Doon Pioneer Village. On Friday January 31st, 1958 the headline of the Galt Reporter read,"Roseville printer, the Oldest in Canada" . The first school in the Roseville area was also located on the Kaiser farm across from the Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church. A blacksmith and cooper shop were also located on the property. In 1961, Stuart E. Franklin obtained a part of the former Kaiser property and started to build a residential subdivision. The size of the Kaiser property was reduced a great deal by this sale. In 1966, in agreement with Melvin Becker, a community water system was put in. After this system was installed many more homes were built.

    Notes:

Lamentable Death - A very lamentable death, the result of exhaustion and the intense cold of the night, occurred in North Dumfries on Sabbath last. From the particulars which we have gathered, it would appear that Messrs. Cherry Bros., of Glenmorris Mills, had asked a number of parties to go to their mill on Saturday last and assist them in cutting away some ice which was a hindrance to the working of their mill. Amongst others who went was John Marshall, son of Mr. Thomas Marshall, who lives on the river road about four miles from Galt. On arriving at the mill young Marshall, with the others assembled, went to work to remove the ice, and with the short interval of stopping for dinner continued working until dark, and of course got very wet, particularly about the feet. They then stopped and the deceased after waiting for a short time, found a companion, who was driving a short way, and started for home. When he came to where the roads separated he got out of the sleigh strangely enough, not complaining that he felt very cold. From the time he left his companion, at the sleigh, until he was found the next morning about 10 o'clock, by Mr. Robert Scott, who was on his way to church, at Galt, he was not seen. When found, he was lying by the side of the road, not far from Mr. Alex McPhail's, and was then so badly frozen that he was n a dying condition. Mr. Scott carried him into Mr. McPhail's, and everything was done ikt was possible to do until medical aid could be obtained. Dr. Richardson arrived quickly, but from the first the ease was hopeless and about six o'clock in the evening he b4eathed his last. When first taken into Mr. McPhail's an examination of his person showed that his legs were frozen quite solidly to above the knees and his hands entirely frozen to above the wrists. In removing his boots it was found that his feet and legs were covered with ice, showing that when he started to walk home his feet were very wet. There can hardly be a doubt that over-work, getting wet and the extreme cold of the night caused the most unfortunate death. Undoubtedly, when the poor young man got out of the sleigh, the cold was striking into him, he had then a little over three miles to walk and that alone, with the roads anything but good. Imperceptibly to himself, as he went along his feet became frozen and when aware that they were so, his bodily strength was so much exhausted and he was so much benumbed by the intense cold, that beyond a few struggles, which the snow on the road plainly showed, he was scarcely capable of exertion. A few minutes of lying down completed the work of the cold, and he passed into a state of unconsciousness which was but the fore runner of death. An inquest was held on Monday, Dr. Philip coroner, and Messrs., Alex McPhail, foreman, John H. Rutherford, Robert Marshall, John Leeds, James S. Turnbull, Anthony Marshall, John Orr, James Lake, James Campbell, Thomas Oliver, and George Rutherford, Juryman, when after a carful enquiry into the facts a verdict "That the deceased came to his death by getting his feet wet and attempting to walk home on the night of Saturday, January 25th, 1879, when the mercury was at Zero," was rendered. The funeral of the young man took place on Tuesday afternoon last the many friends of the family evincing their sympathy by turning out in large numbers.

    Notes:

    Death of Mrs. Thomas Marshall

The death of this lady, which was very sudden, has cast a gloom over the section in which she resided. Sabbath morning she arose and after breakfast, feeling apparently quite well, she made ready for church. With her family she drove into town and was just entering the church when she was stricken almost unconscious at once from apparent apoplexy. She was conveyed to the basement of the church and medical aid was quickly rendered her, but, all without avail. She was removed to the residence of Mr. Robert Henselwood, and after lingering in an unconscious state until noon of the next day she breathed her last. Mrs. Marshall had only little more than passed her 48th year. She was a sister of Mr. William Biggar, glove maker, and Mrs. Robert Henselwood, of Galt. Of a very happy disposition, she had hosts of friends, who deeply regret her death and extend their heartiest sympathy to her bereaved husband and family in their terrible misfortune.

    _______________________

Death of Mr. James Wilson - It is with the most painful regret that we announce the death of this gentleman, which took place on Sunday morning last. At the time of our last issue his condition was looked upon as hopeful, but a change for the worse occurred that day and after a severe struggle he sand to his eternal rest.

Mr. Wilson was the eldest son of the late Robert Lundy Wilson, for so many years a leading representative man in this section. He inherited all his father's sterling uprightness of character and independence. His word was all that was required and in all his dealings with his neighbors and the public he was almost rigidly straightforward. A man of good abilities, largely self-taught, yet almost liberally educated and informed, to the various positions of trust which he at times occupied, he brought an earnest desire to thoroughly discharge his responsibility.

Mr. Wilson was twice married, his first wife having been Miss Jamieson, sister of Mrs. David Gibson, of North Dumfries, and his second, who now survives him, being Miss Mills, of Brantford Township. He had a numerous family, amongst whom are Mr. Daniel Wilson, and Mr. Alex Wilson, jr., of Galt, and Mr. James Wilson, of Chatham. Of the younger family, all, we believe, are still at home. Mr. Wilson had by industry achieved a very comfortable and valuable property.

His remains were interred on Tuesday in the little "Cedar Creek" cemetery, where lie his father and mother. His funeral was attended by a large number of his relatives and neighbors. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. R. Dickson, of the Central Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Wilson has been a member and trustee since the union of the Presbyterian bodies in Canada.

    Notes:

    FRED KAISER.

This is the village blacksmith. He came to Roseville in the spring of 1844, and with the exception of five or six months has been a part of the population ever since. He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1828, being now in the 70th year of his age; yet he is in robust health and is found daily at the forge in his blacksmith shop. He came to America, when only fourteen years of age, with his parents, Berlin and Waterloo being then mere hamlets. Mr. Kaiser does general blacksmithing and builds wagons and cutters, and does all kinds of wood and iron work in this line. His son, Louis, who keeps the books, has just added a new feature to the business in the way of a small, but well equipped, job printing office, and is turning out some fine work in that line. The latter has had considerable experience in newspaper work, and I would not be surprised if Roseville did not, in the near future, suddenly find herself enjoying the blessed privilege of having a local newspaper.
