Mrs. Benjamin Hilker, 84, died at her home 505 High street, at 3: 30 yesterday afternoon. A week ago Saturday Mrs. Hilker fell down the basement stairs in her home and suffered severe injuries from which it was imposible for a person of her age to recover.

Abigail Detwiler was born in Roseville, Ontario, December 22, 1844. When four years of age she moved with her parents, to Port Elgin, Ontario, where she lived until her marriage to Benjamin Hilker on January 22, 1869. After their marriage, in 1873, Mr. and Mrs. Hilker moved to Lansing, Mower county, where they lived on a farm for twelve years. In 1885 they moved to Austin which was the family home for 43 years.

Benjamin and Abigail Hilker were converted to the German Evangelical church at Port Elgin, Ontario, and were baptized in Lake Huron. They united with the United Brethren church in 1870. To them were born five children: Mrs. Dell Roberts, who died eleven years ago, January 22; Mrs. Eugene Fairbanks of Yakima, Wash.; J. W. Hilker of Rochester; A. F. Hilker and Mrs. C. E. It seems that all four of the Hilker males, sons of William and Henriette Hilker (1851 Census, Waterloo Twp, Waterloo Co. ON) moved from Waterloo Co. to District 28, North Bruce, ON. In the 1871 Census, Henry, 46, is listed as a Merchant in sub-district "B", Saugeen, Page 39: Adam, 37, farmer, is in the same sub-district, Page 33: Benjamin, 27, no occupation listed, is in the same sub-district, Page 55 with his 26-yr-old wife Abigail (nee Detweiler) and 7-month-old daughter, Nancy, and a 28-yr-old boarder of French origin, Louis Sees, b. in the USA. Louis Sees is my (Dianne's) Great Grandfather. Abigail Detweiler's niece, Angelina Detweiler married Louis Sees.

The 4th Hilker son who migrated to North Bruce is listed in the 1871 Census as a builder, age 31, living in Southampton Village, Page 27.

Henry Hilker, the oldest of the 4 boys, is a famous original settler of the town of Port Elgin. He came in 1853. He was the 1st Reeve. He had a general store on Goderich Street in the center of town which he ran for years with Mr. Ruby (Ruby Hilker) It later became Hilker Co. A major street is named after this town founder, Henry Hilker.

Henry's youngest brother, Benjamin migrated to the USA with his wife, Abigail and 3 kids about 1874. They settled in Mower County, Minnesota. About 5 years later, Abigail's brother, George D. Detweiler and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Kepkey) moved with their 3 Ontario-born kids to Mower County MN. The 1880 MN census shows these two families living on the same farm in Lansing Township, Mower Co., Enumeration District 170, Page 574C, Line 37, Dwelling No. 28. By that time, June 8th, 1880, there were 12 people in this extended family.

We've been able to learn more about the descendants of these Hilker/Detweiler families, which we can talk about if you are interested. Because Henry Hilker was such an important pioneer and pillar in the town of Port Elgin, Bruce Co., ON, the histories of that town, Saugeen Township and North Bruce County are rich with Hilker information, lore and photographs

    Roseville

    THE GLOBE HOTEL.

This old landmark is now occupied as a residence by the venerable Jacob Clemens, who for 25 years conducted it as a tavern. Mr Clemens is now over seventy years of age and is full of interesting reminiscences of Roseville's early days. Nelson Newcombe and John Detweiler, whose remains were consigned to the clay years ago, were among the first landlords of this tavern. The bar traffic of that day was something enormous and it was not an unusual event to see twenty sturdy countrymen step up to the counter and take their toddy on the expenditure of a quarter by one of the crowd. The gesuine old sourmast then could be purchased for eighteen cents per gallon. Teamsters from Washington, Ayr, Galt, Berlin, Waterloo and other points were frequent patrons of the bar. Alas! modern development has changed all this! Here in the good old days of yore, where friend met friend and hilarity and joviality predominated, is now the quiet and peaceful private abode of the venerable owner and his family.

Jacob Detweiler," second son of Jacob and Mary (Funk) Detweiler, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 25th, 1778. On December 15th, 1803, he was married to Susannah Rosenberger who was born in the same county as Mr. Detweiler, January 15th, 1781. When a young man he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite body, but when the Funkite question was brought up he would not give his decision in favor of either party. However, after his coming to Canada he was an active worker in behalf of the Mennonite church until his death. In 1822 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, a little west of Roseville, on the farm now possessed by their grand-son, Aaron B. Detweiler. Here they resided until their deaths. She died September 9th, 1847, and he died August 8th, 1858. To them was born a family of ten children"
