He was an old, respected and well known settler in the township having, during his stay of fifty-five years, occupied many positions of trust. He came to Guelph in1831, when what is now the flourishing city of Guelph was almost a forest. The first day's work he performed was done for the late Mr. Sandilands and that was chopping trees on the site where the Mercury office now stands. A short time afterwards, he took up land on lot 19, 8th concession, Puslinch and afterwards, purchased lot 17 on the same concession. He was appointed the first clerk of the old Revision Court in Puslinch, was township clerk for seven years, assessor for five years, treasurer for eight years and was a captain in the Militia in 1837 under Colonel Kirby. He retired from farming in 1860, yet he lived on the old homestead up to about two years ago, when he went to live with his daughter. He had been ailing for some time, the infirmities of old age being the cause. The funeral takes place Sat., July 17.
