    Notes:

WILLIAM BELL was regarded as one of the early settlers in Ayr, although no definite date for his arrival has been determined. On January 26, 1850 the Canada Gazette announced that he had received his licence to practice, and this was probably close to the time he settled in Ayr.

He was appointed coroner for the United Counties in 1852, but no further mention of him is found until 1861. According to the census of that year he was born in Scotland, was 41 years of age, wife was named Marion, and their family consisted of four daughters and one son. Also in that year the Berlin Telegraph reported that someone had mutilated the tails and manes of his horses.

In 1862 another daughter was born. In May there was a report of an operation performed by him with the assistance of his partner, Dr. Bingham, and Dr, Dickson of Paris. Dr. Bingham probably entered the partnership sometime in 1859.

On February 7, 1870 he died of typhoid fever. The Ayr correspondent for the Galt Reporter said the "funeral was one of the largest seen here for years. . . . all places of business were closed during the passing of the cortege."
