Bowman.-Norman Edward Bowman, Kitchener, Ont., died Jan. 12, 1942; aged 34 y. 2 m. 3 d. He was born in Guernsey, Sask., Nov. 9, 1907. He was the son of Henry Bowman and the late Lydia Ann Weber, of Waterloo, Ont. He is survived by his wife (nee Muriel Marie Ernst), an infant child (Carol Ann), 3 brothers (Claire, Walter, Mervin), and 1 sister (Edna), all of Waterloo. He was an esteemed member of First Mennonite Church, and a much appreciated Sunday-school teacher. He will be missed in both the community and the Church. Funeral services were held at Kitchener, and burial at the East End Mennonite Cemetery, in charge of Bro. C. F. Derstine. Theme, "Closing the Gate Behind Us.: Bros. Merle Shantz and J. B. Martin assisted in the services.

Bowman. --- Henry S., son of the late Moses C. and Lydia (Schantz) Bowman, was born Dec. 8, 1880, in Wilmot Twp., Ont.; passed away at the K-W Hospital, Waterloo, Ont.; Sept. 12, 1950; aged 69 y. 9 m. 4 d. On Dec. 12, 1906, he was married to Lydia Ann Weber at Guernsey, Sask, who died Jan. 23, 1937. Surviving are 3 children (Walter, Mervin, and Edna), 4 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Edwin and Moses), and one sister (Melinda). Three children (Norman, Clare, and Paul), and one brother (Alvah) predeceased him. He was a faithful Christian and interested in the church. He was always willing to serve in a humble way, and was a regular attendant and member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at the Erb Street Church, Waterloo, Ont., conducted by Clare Shantz and J. B. Martin.

In her youth she accepted Christ, and joined the Mennonite Church of which she remained a faithful member till death. On Dec. 12, 1906, she was married to Henry Bowman at Guernsey, Sask. where they resided for 9 years, then moved to Waterloo Co., Ont., where she resided until the time of her death. To this union were born 6 children: Norman, Edna, Clare, Walter, Paul (who died in infancy) and Mervin. Besides her companion and children there remain her 2 brothers (Abram of Kitchener, Ont., and Alvin of Kiedelburg, Ont.) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Emmanuel Bowman, Floradale, Ont., and Mrs. Norman Shantz, Preston, Ont.). Bowman - The sunset hours of Friday, April 28, saw the passing of Bro. Moses C. Bowman of Kitchener, one of the older and respected citizens of the community. On Thursday he suffered a slight stroke, was unconscious for three hours, but rallied to such a remarkable extent that his recovery seemed probable, when suddenly, after conversing with friends, with no premonition, his spirit slipped away.Bro. Bowman was born on Jan. 1, 1855, at Mannheim, Ont. He was the son of Pre. Moses S. Bowman. He was married the first time to Lydia Shantz, Feb. 5, 1878, who predeceased him in 1899. He was later married to Susanna E. Shantz, Oct. 25, 1900.He is survived by his wife, and 5 children, from his first wife (Alvah S. and Edwin S. of Guernsey, Sask.; Henry S. of Waterloo, Malinda S. of Kitchener, and Moses S. of Mannheim), 16 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry Baer, Mannheim, Mrs. David Shuh and Mrs. Menno Shantz, both of Kitchener; Aaron of Mannheim; Noah of Guernsey, Sask.; Mrs. John Berry, Langley, British Columbia; and Ezra of Freedom, Mo.Bro. Bowman was a widely and well known, both as a man and a minister of the Gospel for 44 years. As such he was a consistent Christian, a staunch churchman, and a vigorous minister, whose services were widely used. Besides being one of the pastors of the Mannheim Mennonite Church, he served outlying places such as Zurich, South Cayuga, Sherkston, Bothwell, and Rainham, in his earlier days, he also labored among the local churches. His counsel in Conference work was valuable in many directions, and often sought after by other workers. He was a versatile and apt conversationalist, ready with wisdom and wholesome philosophy, which unraveled many difficult problems. He was a lover of good men, well informed, an interested citizen, a pleasant neighbor, who radiated a good deal of cheer by his remarkable fund of illustrations gathered during his long life, and kept ready by a well trained memory.He was one of the men who kept his faith strong by a constant devotion to the living God. Many men allow the experiences of life and much constant distress to crush them. Bro. Bowman seemed to have learned the art of making such stepping stones to a higher life and greater conquest.The funeral was held Wednesday at the home and at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and interment at the Latschar Mennonite Cemetery at Mannheim. On the 27th of March 1899, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Sister Lydia, daughter of Joshua Y. Shantz and wife of Pre. Moses C. Bowman, aged 41 years, 2 months and 6 days. Buried on the 30th in the Latschar graveyard. Funeral services by Bish. Amos Cressman in German, and by Noah Stauffer in English from Phil. 1: 21. Besides her husband she leave four sons, one daughter and many other relatives and friends to mourn the lose of one who was dearly beloved. God comfort the bereaved ones in their affliction.

Moses Weber," the seventh son of Abraham C. Weber, was born August 29th, 1853, and died August 27th, 1890. He was married three times, first to Hettie, daughter of Henry and Mary (Musselman)Brubacher. She was born April 8th, 1854, and died October 30th, 1875. After her death he was married to Rebecca, daughter of Abraham B. and Lydia (Shantz) Clemmer. The second marriage was blessed with a family of seven children, namely: VII Lydia Ann, VII Abraham, VII Elmina, VII Elam (dead), VII Adline, VII Menno (dead), and VII Elvin. After the decease of second wife which took place April 25th, 1885, he was married to Annie, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Martin) Kinzie. She was widow of Jonathan B. Snyder. There are no children of first and third marriages. Mr Weber resided on a beautiful farm being composed of part of lot No. 117, German Company's Tract, where he died of typhoid fever. His widow has her home with Christian B. Snyder three miles north of the town of Waterloo."

Moses Bowman, "the eldest son of Benjamin Baumann, was born November 9th, 1819. He was married to Anna, daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Biehn) Cressman, October 8th 1844. She was born near Freeport, Ontario, on August 7th, 1828. On March 25th, 1845, they moved on their farm (The farm is composed of lot No. 4, north of Bleam's Road, Wilmot) near Manheim where they still reside. On May 1st, 1853, he was ordained deacon of the church of his choice, and on January 2nd, 1859, he was ordained minister of the Mennonite denomination. He was, in his days, one of the best pulpit orators that the church possessed, and even yet in his old days his sermons convince both friends and enemies that he is a man of more than ordinary ability. His family consisted of twelve children,"

Pre. Moses S. Bowman.

Near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ontario, on January 4th, 1898, Pre. Moses S. Bowman, aged 78 years, 1 month and 26 days. He was married to Anna Cressman in 1844, and the union was blest with six sons and six daughters of whom all but one son survive him. He has left also, 53 surviving grandchildren. On May 1st, 1853, he was chosen as deacon, and on January 2d, 1859, he was ordained a minister of the Mennonite church. For upwards of thirty-five years he worked earnestly and faithfully for the Master who had blessed him with a clear intellect, a keen insight into human nature, fluent language, and great spiritual power, so that his sermons were always attentively listened to. His preaching was of the conversational order, and his words thus seemed to be directed to every individual rather than to the congregation as a body, and as he spoke directly to the heart, reason and conscience of his hearer, his words never failed to make a deep impression. He was greatly interested in the cause of temperance, and his efforts in this direction, especially in Sunday school work, have been productive of much good. In the capacity of husband, father, neighbor and friend, his conduct was such as to gain for him the respect and esteem of all who knew him. During the last four years of his life he did not take an active part in the ministry, owing to impaired mental and bodily power, but he looked forward serenely for the coming of his Lord, and when his physician, during his last visit, told him that he had not many hours to live, he expressed his pleasure that he was so soon to be summoned to be in the presence of the King, where we believe he now is, and is to remain forever more.
On Jan. 7, he was followed to his last resting place in the Latschar cemetery by a large concourse of people, on which occasion Bishop Amos Cressman spoke in German from John 11: 25, 26, and Noah Stauffer in English from Luke 2: 29-32, and Heb. 11: 14, 16.

BOWMAN.-On the 22d of December, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Anna Cressman, widow of the late Pre. Moses Bowman. She was born near Freeport, Ont., Aug. 7, 1828, and reached the age of 74 Y., 4 M., 15 D. Buried on the 25th at Mannheim, followed to her last earthly resting place by a host of relatives and friends. She was beloved and respected and we mourn not as those who have no hope.

Last Saturday Mrs. Joshua Shantz was called to her long home, after a short illness and was buried at the cemetery between Hamburg and Wilmot Centre last Wednesday morning. Mrs. Shantz leaves a husband and grown-up family to mourn their loss. She resided on the farm on which she died for fifty-two years.

Abraham C. Weber," the youngest son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Cressman) Weber, was born in Berlin, Waterloo County, Ontario, March 14th, 1817. On October 23rd, 1838, he was married to Judith, youngest daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born January 2nd, 1821, and died March 12th, 1884. After their marriage he moved on his father's farm, being composed of part of lot No. 15, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until the Grand Trunk Railway was built in 1855, when they sold their large farm and purchased that of Benjamin Shantz and Stafford's farms at Freeport. Here they resided until his death which took place July 6th, 1874. She resided until his death which took place July 6th, 1874. She resided with her son, Moses, on the west side of the Grand River, near Chicopee, where she died. He was ordained as minister of the Gospel for the Mennonite denomination, December 22nd, 1850. He preached regularly and attended frequently at funerals. His time was largely occupied in visiting the sick and giving words of consolation to such who were seeking their spiritual welfare, and his life was a busy one. So much of his time was devoted to his pastoral duties that he was almost unable to attend to his private affairs. Although sacrificing much of his time in the service of the church of his choice, he would not receive any compensation for the time devoted in behalf of the church, but looked for his reward beyond the present life where the faithful labors in His vineyard shall be spiritually rewarded for all ages of eternity. They had a numerous family, being composed of sixteen children"

First Mennonite Church

The first church built in Waterloo County was erected in Berlin in 1813, and was known as Benjamin Eby's Meeting House.

Benjamin Eby had come to Canada in 1807 and in 1809 was ordained preacher. Three years later, in 1812, he was ordained bishop. His "parish included sections of Waterloo, Wilmot and Woolwich" (Uttley 1937: 27). In 1818 a frame addition, which was to be used as a winter school, was built on to the church. The log meeting house was replaced in 1834 by a larger frame church, and the old building was taken to Breslau to become the first meeting house in that community. (The Breslau church was known as Cressman Meeting House, a name which was changed in 1968 to Breslau Mennonite Church.) A Sunday School was opened in the church in 1841.

Benjamin Eby died in 1853. He was followed by Abraham C. Weber who served the congregation until his death in 1874. In that same year, a division in the church brought about the departure of a group who organized a congregation of Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites, to become United Mennonites in 1875 and then Mennonite Brethren in Christ in 1883. Their church is the present-day Bethany Missionary Church on Lancaster Street East. Christian Eby was the next minister of the Berlin Mennonite Church, until 1879. The church was known over the years as Benjamin Eby's Church, Christian Eby's Church (from 1854-1904), and the Berlin Church (from 1904 until 1917.) The name of the church became First Mennonite Church in 1917.

A new brick church was built in 1902. A Bible Study School was begun in 1907, and in 1928 a separate brick Bible Study School building was erected. Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church was formed by some members in 1924 as a result of a division in the church.

Of interest: when the new church was built in 1902, the 1834 frame church was bought by D.B. Betzner who moved it to Cedar Street where it became a woodenware business and then a furniture factory. It was destroyed by fire in 1937.

Residence:
The Woolner Farmstead buildings, located at 748 Zeller Drive, are situated in the north end of the City of Kitchener on 6.47 acres off scenic Zeller drive. The original Mennonite Georgian farmhouse and outbuildings were constructed in 1830. The farmhouse addition was built circa 1858, and the barn and concrete silo were built circa 1870.

In 1846 they moved on the farm now possessed by Lorentz Spitiz, a few miles north of Bloomingdale. Here they resided until 1862 when they purchased Jacob B. Betzner's farm, one mile north of Breslau. The 26th of April, in Waterloo Township, two sons of Abraham B. CLEMMER, aged 16 years and 7 months, and 14 years and 7 days respectively. They were engaged in hauling stone, and, driving through marshy ground where the wheels of the wagon turned up wild parsnips. The younger took up some of the roots, and ate them, and also induced his brother to eat some; and in an hour and a half they were both dead, having been poisoned thereby. They were buried on the 28th. A large concourse of people were present, so that there was not room for them in the house. The funeral sermons were, therefore, delivered by Joseph Hegy and John Bear in the grave yard. ELIAS SNYDER.

DEATH OF ABRAM B. CLEMMER

The death occurred on Wednesday, July 14, 1908, of one of Waterloo County's old pioneers, in the person of Abraham B. Clemmer, at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. John Woolner, near Chicopee. Deceased was born in Montgomery County Pennsylvania, March 3, 1819. In the year 1823, he came with his father and mother, to Waterloo County and settled near Preston. Later they moved north of Waterloo on the farm which is yet known as the old Clemmer farm. In 1845 he was married to Lydia Shantz, daughter of the late Jacob Shantz, two miles east of Bloomingdale, where he resided till the year 1863, when he moved on the old Jacob Betzner, farm, 2 miles east of Breslau where he lived until the death of his son, Abram S. Clemmer, after which he resided at the home of John Woolner. Deceased was blessed with a family of 8 children, two of whom survive. Mrs. John Woolner and Mrs. Josiah Martin, Michigan. There are also 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grand-children, who mourn the loss of a kind father and grandfather. Deceased had reached the rip age of 89 years 4 months and 13 days. Eight weeks prior to his death, he suffered a paralytic stroke, which with the infirmities of old age caused death. The funeral which was very largely attended was held on Saturday, July 18, from his late residence, to the Mennonite Church and cemetery, Bloomingdale.

CLEMMER - On the 15th of February, near Breslau, Waterloo county, Ontario, of typhoid fever, Sister Lydia, wife of Abraham b. Clemmer, aged 61 years, 11 months and 14 days. She was buried on the 18th in Synder's grave-yard near Bloomingdale. Services by A. Martin and J. Woolner. Sister Clemmer was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years and was blessed with general good health throughout her life. She was ever ready to lend assistance to the sick and the needy and will be missed by a large circle of friends. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn their loss. Bro. Clemmer, who has been sickly for some months, was unable to follow the remains of his beloved companion to their last resting place, notwithstanding that he is better than he had been for some time previous to her death
