    DR. MAURER PASSES AT 81
    VETERAN LUTHERAN PASTOR RETIRED AFTER PREACHING 47 YEARS

    Retired pastor of First English Evangelical Lutheran church (St. Mark's), Dr. Jacob Maurer, 81 died yesterday at the home of his daughter, 13 Irvin street, following a lengthy illness. He was active in the Lutheran ministry from 1888 until his retirement in 1935. Born on Oct. 24, 1859, at Erbsville, he was a son of the late John Henry and Anna Martha (Schmidt) Maurer. He received his elementary education at Rostock and Listowel high school. Later he attended Stratford Collegiate Institute. In 1881 Dr. Maurer entered the arts department of Thiel Collage at Greenville, Pa., from which he graduated in May, 1885 with the bachelor of arts degree. In 1888 he received the degree of M.A. from the same college.

    STUDIED IN PHILADELPHIA

    Dr. Maurer entered the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in the fall of 1885 and graduated in May, 1888. On May 28, 1888, he was ordained in the ministry of the Canada Synod at Zurich, Ont. by Rev. F. Viet, D.D., synodical president. From 1888 to 1897 he served St. John's Lutheran parish at Mahone Bay, N.S. This parish comprised a radius of 20 miles in which he served 12 preaching stations. Other parishes which he served included Rose Bay, three congregations, 1898-1905; Unionville, Ont., two congregations, 1908-1913; Williamsburg, 1913-1918. [some words missing] Dr. Maurer also served his church in various capacities. He was the first president of the Synod of Nova Scotia. This was from 1903 to 1904. Deceased also assisted in the organization of the English missions in Ontario and Quebec which formed the nucleus of the Synod of Central Canada in 1926. Dr. Maurer was a charter member of Waterloo College and Seminary, having served on the board of governors from the time of its organization until 1928. For a number of years he was president of the general council. When he assumed the pastorate of First English Lutheran church in Kitchener there was a membership of 75. Dr. Maurer from 1918 to 1935 witnessed the growth of the membership to several hundred. For some time prior to his death he had resided in Woodstock. Surviving are his wife, the former Adelia Cressman, two sons, Carl of Kitchener and Paul of Ottawa, four daughters, Misses Anna and Ruth of Kitchener, Mrs. Arthur Prowse of Meadow Lake, Sask., and Mrs. F. T. Julian of Woodstock, a brother, Henry of Hanover, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2: 30 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran church. Dr. A. A. Zinck of Milwaukee, Dr. C. H. Little of Waterloo Seminary and Rev. A. G. Jacobi will officiate. Interment will be in Woodland cemetery. Remains will be at Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until Tuesday at 10 a.m. when they will be removed to St. Mark's church.
