    GOWING, Mrs. G. Wesley

    Of 1701 King St. East, Preston Cambridge, at the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 1974, Ada Irene Harvey, beloved wife of G. Wesley Gowing; dear mother of Grace and Ruth (Mrs. Edgar Dyck) of Preston, Jean (Mrs. Elmer Bowey) of Galt, Mary (Mrs. Gordon Debus) of Waterloo, Robert and Frank of Galt, Clifford of Kitchener, Bruce of Paris, Ralph of Owen Sound, Jack of Cobourg; also surviving are 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; in her 84th year. Mrs. Gowing was born in Hespeler and lived most of her life in Preston, a member of the Brethren Gospel Hall, Cambridge Galt. The funeral and committal services will be conducted from the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, Friday, at 2 p.m. Interment in Hespeler cemetery.

    Moses Kraft, "the eldest, was born on the farm he now possesses, May 23rd, 1833. He is married to Magdalena Hagey. After their marriage they moved on a farm a few miles west of Waterloo where they resided for some time. Some twenty years ago he purchased the old homestead where he has resided ever since. Of late years he invested largely in real estate. He purchased the old "Sherington Farm" adjoining his farm on the north, and a year or so ago he bought the old "Bingeman Farm". He now possesses over 600 acres of land. He is a good farmer and a shrewd business man. He has held the office of councillor and reeve for some years but now devotes his whole time to the managing of his extensive farms. His family consists of eleven children".

    Kraft. - Margaret Hagey, widow of the late Moses Kraft, was born June 1, 1839, at Preston, Ont.; died Sept. 7, 1915 at Bridgeport, Ont.; aged 76 y. 3 m. 6 d. Their union was blessed with 8 children, 33 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Sister Kraft united with the Mennonite Church many years ago. She was of a quiet disposition, but through her exemplary life and testimony she has left a bright evidence of the faith she had in her Savior. Her body was laid to rest in the Cressman Cemetery. Services conducted by Jacob S. Woolner, Jr., in English, and Jonas Snider in German.

    In another part of the book Rebecca is referred to as Magdalena, still the census refers to her as Margaret. Their cemetery stone as well. Her son was born registered his mother as Margaret, his marriage record as Rebecca. In the 1881 of Waterloo Township she is Rebecca M.

    In the house of her father Jacob Hagey in the month previous to her birth a Margaretha Schwartz died at the age of 18. It is believed that Margaret Hagey was named in honour of her and that Margaretha was the unlisted sister of Leah Schwartz wife of Jacob Hagey and Margaret's mother.

He came to this county when a young man and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario. On October 1st, 1837, he was married to Barbara Devitt who was born December 2nd, 1809, and died August 19th, 1847, leaving a family of seven children. After her decease he was again married to Magdalena Martin, September 4th, 1849. She was born July 6th, 1821. They resided on a farm in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, near the Dumfries town line, about three miles from Ayr, where he died June 28th, 1871. His family consisted of twelve children".

He was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham and Mary (Schneider) Cressman. She was born October 4th, 1818, and died February 23rd, 1889, aged 70 years, 4 months and 19 days. They moved on a farm two and one-half miles east of Berlin, on south-west part of lot No. 120, German Company's Tract, where they lived for many years. During their old age they lived with their son-in-law, John Erb, where they died. He died July 9th, 1872. They were blessed with a family of five children"

    EBY - On the 23d of February, near Centreville, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo county, Ontario, Sister Elizabeth, widow of the late Benjamin Eby, aged 70 years, 4 months and 19 days. She was buried in Berlin on the 28th, followed to her last resting-place by many relatives and friends. In the last few months Sister Eby had but very little rest, being in great pain, but which she bore with christian fortitude, and with the assurance that after the afflictions of this life were over there would follow a glorious rest.     Death of a Former Resident or Waterloo County.


    The Waterloo Chronicle says intelligence was received in that town on Monday of the death, at Caledonia, Mich., of Mr. Geo. Kraft, father of Mr. Aaron Kraft, of the Union Mills. Mr. Kraft was one of the early settlers of Waterloo township, having carried on farming extensively for many years, on the old homestead, near Bridgeport, is now occupied by his son, Moses. He attained the great age of 87 years, 11 months and 10 days. He was born at Berlin, on Feb. 15th, 1809 and was married to Esther Bingeman, 1882. Thirteen children were born of this marriage, five of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are: Moses Kraft, Bridgeport, Aaron Kraft, Waterloo; Magdelena, wife of the late Joseph B. Weber, Kent County, Mich.; Hannah wife of Benjamin W. Eby, Kent County, Mich.; John Kraft, Kent County, Mich.; Geo. Kraft, Kent County, Mich.; Rev. S. B. Kraft, Tonawanda, N. Y., and Esther H., unmarried, at home. In 1887 the old couple moved to Caledonia, Mich., where she died in 1892. The funeral took place on Wednesday, January 27th.

    KRAFT - On the 4th of January, 1892, in Caledonia, Kent Co., Mich., of "Lagrippe," of which she suffered nearly two weeks, Sister Esther, (maiden name Bingeman), wife of Bro. George Kraft Sr., aged 81 years, three months and 4 days. She leaves a husband and 8 children to mourn their loss. She was born in Pottstown, Pa., from which place she emigrated to Canada, and about five years previous to her death they moved to Michigan. She died rejoicing in her Savior. Services by S. Sherk, Elder Straub and C. Wenger.

    Jacob Hagey, "the eldest son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1808. In 1822, he, in company with his parents and others, came to Canada and settled at Preston, Ontario. He was married to Leah, daughter of Christian and Sophia (Ruth) Schwartz. She was born November 15th, 1811, and died May 28th, 1882. They resided at Preston, on the farm now possessed by their youngest son, Levi. He died April 9th, 1893. When a young man he was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Hagey field of labor. He was a man that was held in high esteem in the community for his many excellent social and religious qualities. It is doubtful whether he had a single enemy. His family consisted of eight children".

    HAGEY - On the 19th of April, 1893, near Preston, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., of infirmities of old age, Deacon Jacob Hagey. Buried on the 22d at Hagey's meeting-house where relatives and friends met to pay the last tribute of respect. His age was 85 years, 2 months and 26 days. Funeral services by J.B.. Gingrich at the house and Moses Bowman at the meeting-house, from 2 Cor. 4: 17, 18 and 5: 1. Bro. Hagey was ordained to the office of deacon on the 2d of December, 1832
