    ALPINE, Thomas James "Jim" - At the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Friday January 8, 1999 in his 41st year. Beloved son of Patricia (nee: Nixon) and the late Gordon Alpine (1994). Jim will be sadly missed by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends will be received at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge on Sunday form 7-9 p.m. Funeral and Commendation Service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Monday January 11, 1999 at 1: 30 p.m. with Canon David Bowyer officiating. Cremation to follow. If desired, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and would be appreciated by the family.

Gordon was a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery H.A.A., a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #121. Beloved husband of Patricia (nee Nixon). Dear father of Thomas James Alpine of Cambridge. Brother of Grant and his wife Marie Alpine of R.R. #4, Cambridge and predeceased by his parents and a sister Jean Haley. Friends will be received at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge on Wednesday 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted in the Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday April 14, 1994 at 1: 30 p.m. with Rev.     Patricia Alpine - Patricia Alpine of Cambridge passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. She was in her 85th year. Born in England, she was the daughter of Charles Nixon and Ellen Cunningham. Beloved wife of the late Gordon Alpine. Survived by her brothers Charles (Kay) and Edward Nixon, three nieces and one nephew. Predeceased by her son Jim Alpine, sister Jane Beattie, nephew Donald Beattie and niece Patricia Nixon. Pat was a Girl Guide leader in the Scouting movement for many years. Long time customers at the farmers market in Galt will remember her gladioli stand. The love of travelling she shared with her husband took them to most of Canada's provinces and many American states. The local quilting community will mourn her loss; she was a teacher of the many arts of quilting, a founding member of the Busy Hands Quilt Guild, with her friend Kay, a founder of the Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild. Pat had a great love of music and continued to play her organ into her final years. Rested at Coutts Funeral Home, Cambridge where the funeral service was held on Saturday. Interment of cremated remains at Ayr Cemetery in the spring.

    War Veteran Charles J. Nixon Passes

    Charles Joseph Nixon, a member of the original Princess Patricia Light Infantry in World War I, passed away in Westminster Hospital, London, on Sunday, in his 71st year.

    Took Part in Boer War

    Born in Toronto, Mr. Nixon lived in Galt for many years. As a young man he took to the army and enlisted in the Canadian Contingent under the command of Col. Otter at the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899. He was subsequently wounded at Paardeberg and invalided to England. Upon recovery, he joined the 18th Hussars, Imperial Cavalry, and returned to South Africa, for the duration of the war. He came back to Canada in 1904.

    Enlisted with Princess Pats

    Upon the outbreak of World War I, he immediately enlisted with the Princess Pats, being number 88 in company one. He was wounded at St. Eloi and later returned to Canada.

    The family lived in Ayr from 1930 to 1932, when they removed back to Galt where they lived until July, 1950, when they returned to Ayr.

    The Survivors

    The survivors are his wife, Ellen Maud Cunningham, of Ayr; two sons, Charles of Galt and Edward of Ayr; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon Alpine (Patricia), R.R. 5, Galt, and Mrs. R. A. Beattie (Jane) of Brantford, and four grandchildren. The Funeral The funeral is being held this (Wednesday) afternoon from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor to the Ayr Cemetery.

    Mrs. Charles J. Nixon Passes

    One of Ayr's best known residents, Mrs. Charles J. Nixon passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Thursday following a heart attack. She was in her 80th year, and until her passing was quite active. She was born Ellen Cunningham in Norfolk, England; the daughter of a warrant officer in the British army. This Military environment instilled in her a deep pride in British and Canadian armed forces which was evident throughout her lifetime. She came to Canada in 1919, and the family resided in Galt until 1950, with the exception of a two-year period, 1930-32, when they lived in Ayr. In 1950 she returned to Ayr, where she had resided since. Her husband, who was a veteran of World War 1, predeceased her in 1951. Mrs. Nixon was a valued member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr. Surviving are two sons, Charles and Edward of Ayr; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Patricia) Alpine of RR 4, Galt, and Mrs. Robert (Jane) Beattie Brantford; two sisters, Mrs. W. Yates of Birmingham, England, and Mrs. George Gee of Surrey, England. Six grandchildren also survive.

    The Funeral

    Funeral service was held on Monday at Christ Church, conducted by Rev. N. A. Tilford. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Robert Lovett, Robert Todd, John P. Brown, Clifford Challenger, Murray Smith and Gilbert Gemmel.
