    Sad Affair near Hespeler
    From our own Correspondent

A most melancholy event took place on Sunday morning near the R.R. track about 1-1/2 miles above Hespeler. An old man said to be about 86 years of age of the name of Musser, occupied two apartments by himself, contiguous to the farm house in which his daughter, son-in-law and family resided. It was customary for some of the family before retiring for the night to visit the old man's rooms. On looking in on Sunday night at bedtime, he was found asleep and left undisturbed. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning the family was aroused by the scream of one of the children who had been awaked by the suffocating influence of smoke in the house. They had barely time to make their escape from the house before it was enveloped in flames, and without securing even sufficient clothing. The rooms occupied by the old man were already burnt down, and on Dr. Swan, being called, all that could be found of the old man were a few charred bones, which were collected into a box of about a foot square. The fire is supposed to have been entirely accidental, but how it originated cannot be ascertained. Dr. Swan supposes from the remains of the old man being found near the door of the apartment in which he slept, that he had been suffocated and fallen down in an attempt to gain the door. An inquest was held on Monday when a verdict in accordance with the above facts were returned.

    Notes:

Martin Bear, "was born in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1774. At the time when he was a young man, real estate in Pennsylvania, especially in the older counties, became so high in price that the majority of farmer's sons who wished to follow their paternal calling, were not in a financial position to procure a farm for themselves, hence the desire to seek homes elsewhere. This caused young Martin to make a journey to Canada to see the country before he would move here. In the summer of 1800 he arrived at old Joseph Schörg's who had located on the Grand River, opposite Doon, a few months previously. Finding the nature of the country, soil, timbers, and waters even beyond his expectations, he decided to settle here and immediately selected a tract of land (Now in possession of Anson Groh) situated between Preston and Hespeler, of which he cleared several acres and erected a small log house thereon, then returned to Pennsylvania. Early in spring, 1801, he in company with his wife and others, moved to Canada, and upon their arrival here each party settled on the locations made the year previously. In a few years nearly all these early settlers had comfortable homes. Old Mr. Martin Bear was an ordained minister of the Mennonite Church. He was one of the first that was ordained in this county (Ordained in 1808 by Bishop Moyer of the Twenty). He was married to Catharine, daughter of Abraham and Anna (Hunsicker) Gingerich. They had a family of thirteen Children"

High up on the hill, on the east side of the road and north of Cox's Creek at Winterbourne, there is a log house on the same site as a former one. It was here, at the home of Alpheus Smith, that the prayer meeting was being held, on a Sunday evening, during which Alpheus Smith's father, the old captain fell to the floor unconscious and remained in that state until the following Sunday when he died. Alpheus Smith married Ann Weaver, from Ancaster, and it was their daughter Mary, or Polly, a life long resident of Winterbourne, who told me the story of Captain Smith, which she alone could tell, and that but three weeks before her death.1a
