The late James Williamson was a native of Greenock, Ayrshire, Scotland. He came to this country In 1834, landed at Quebec, where he remained for two years. From there he journeyed up the St. Lawrence to Kingston and onward up the lake to Toronto and Hamilton. He started for Galt and obtained work in what was then known as the Galt Cut, in which he labored from start to finish. He was present at Galt's first Agricultural Fair, which was held below the lower bridge. Here he met one Mr. Baird, who engaged him to do some chopping of heavy timber, though unused with an axe he soon became an expert woodsman and many were the sturdy oaks that fell before his keen blade. A year or so later he became a farmer on his own account and about this time he was married to Annie Calder, the youngest daughter of James Calder, who survives him. He leaves a family of eleven, of which seven are living. They are: James, David, Mrs. George Hodgson and Mrs. Geo. McDonald, on the Manitoulin Island and Andrew, Mrs. Andrew Nichol and Mrs. Walter Rutherford, of North Dumfries. The deceased was a successful farmer, living almost continuously with-in a mile and a half of Ayr. He took a great interest in political matters, being a pronounced Reformer. In religion he was a Presbyterian. He took a great delight in reading and repeating the Psalms and was well versed In Scottish history and a great lover of Burn's poems. He was a man of sterling Integrity and straight forwardness In business matters and had a wide circle of intimate friends. His wife will have the sympathy of the community in her her bereavement.
