    Sudden Call

Well Known Blenheim Farmer Drops Dead

Tragic events sometimes occur amid the most peaceful surroundings, and now and again it is forcibly brought home to us that in the midst of life we are in death. On Friday evening last in the quiet and peace of his own home, the Angel of Death visited George Mitchell and the transition from life to death was as sudden as the twinkling of an eye.

During the afternoon Mr. Mitchell had attended an auction sale on the farm of a neighbor - Mr. Chas. Scott - some half a mile distant, where he made some purchases, settled for them and had just returned home when he was summoned to the Great Beyond. On entering his home he passed some pleasantries with those present and took a drink of water. A moment later he fell to the floor and died instantly. The shock to the grief stricken family can be better imagined than described.

The deceased was apparently in his usual good health and had given no indication of the sudden termination of life that awaited him. He was yet only a little past his prime, at the age of 59 years. The day of his death was tragic too, in that it was the 36th anniversary of his wedding. He was born near Ayr, on the farm at present occupied by Mr. James Lewis. In politics he was a Reformer and in religion a Presbyterian.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife (nee Miss Catherine Brown) and the following family: Mrs. Peter Gourlay and Mrs. Wm. Brown, North Dumfries, Hilda, Edna, Margaret and David at home. Another son, Hardy, died a few years ago. A brother of Mr. Mitchell resides in Alaska and a sister, Mrs. John Smith, is at Jerseyville, Ont.

The funeral on Monday from his late home, lot 1, con. 12, Blenheim, to the Ayr cemetery, was largely attended, deceased's pastor, Rev. J.J. Brown, conducting the service.

The pallbearers were Messrs. John Smith, John McDonald and David, Douglas, Thomas and John Brown.
