    Mrs. William Dilly

    Ayr resident, Maxine Dilly (nee Grimmer) died at St. Mary's General Hospital, Kitchener on Monday. May 20, 1996 at age 74. Maxine was born in Stratford, Ontario and moved to Ayr at age two, along with her sister Ruth and parents James Howard Grimmer and Andrena (Rena) Twiss. Maxine lived in Ayr until 1945, at which time she and her husband, William Dilly, moved to the Toronto area where they raised a family of four children. They returned to Ayr in 1980 after retirement and have resided here since that time. During her working career, Maxine was involved in the collection and sale of antique furniture, mainly Ontario and Quebec pine and wicker and only recently discontinued the business, which she had been involved in for over twenty years. She is survived by her husband William of 246 Piper Street, Ayr; by her sister Ruth and her husband, Robert Stager of Pensacola, Florida; by her four children, Michael and his wife Mindy Baker of West Virginia, Nancy and her husband William Anderson of London, England, Christopher and his fiance Audrey Demers of Priceville, Ontario and Mary-Elizabeth and her husband Egils Klavins of Burlington, Ontario; along with seven lovely grandchildren, Michael, Bill, Jonathan, Megan, Eli, William and Catherine. A private family burial is to take place with interment in Ayr Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Knox United Church, Ayr on Saturday, June 1, 1996 at 2: 00 p.m. Reverend Fred Hagle to officiate.

    James H. Grimmer Passes

    One of Ayr's well-known residents, James H. Grimmer, passed away in South Waterloo Memorial Hospital this (Thursday) morning, where he had been confined following a recent heart attack. The late Mr. Grimmer was born near New Hamburg and came to Ayr 39 years ago, where he operated a successful plumbing and tinsmithing business until his retirement in 1959. He was a popular figure in social and sporting circles, being associated with Ayr Bowling and Curling Clubs, as well as other organizations. He was a member of Knox United Church. Surviving besides his wife, the former Rena Twiss of Seaforth, are two daughters, Mrs. Robert Stager (Ruth) of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Mrs. William B. Dilly of Port Credit; two sisters, Mrs. Noah Spenler (Ida) and Miss Margaret Grimmer, both of Baden. Seven grandchildren also survive. Funeral service will be conducted from the W. O. Ball Funeral Home, Ayr, on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., with interment in Ayr Cemetery. Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan will officiate.

    Mrs. J. H. Grimmer Passes

    The death occurred on Saturday morning in South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt, of one of Ayr's most respected residents, Mrs. James H. Grimmer. She was in her 72nd year. Mrs. Grimmer, the former Rena Twiss, was born in Seaforth, where she spent her early years. There she married the late Mr. Grimmer in 1918 and in 1925 the couple moved to Ayr. Here the Grimmers operated a very successful tins-smith business for quite a number of years in the building now occupied by the Struthers firm. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Grimmer moved to Hall St. Mr. Grimmer passed away some years ago. The deceased was quite active in community work. She was quite prominent in the local Women's Institute and a past president of that organization. She was a member of Knox United Church and active in the women's organizations of the church. She was also a member of the Ayr Library Board. Before her husband's death the couple were very active lawn bowlers. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. W. D. (Maxine) Dilly, Toronto, and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Stager. Grand Rapids, Mich.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Twiss, Sandstone, Minnesota, and one sister, Mrs. Alex McGavin, Stratford. Funeral service was held from Knox United Church on Monday with Rev. D. E. Willis officiating. Interment was made in the Ayr Cemetery.

    Death of James Griminer


    James Grimmer, a well known and highly respected resident of this community.died on Wednesday, Sept. 18th. Deceased had been ailing for about two years, but had not given up work until about two weeks previous to his death. Mr. Grimmer came to Canada in the year 1874 and for a few years resided in Mitchell. From Mitchell he came to this county and has recided here ever since. Those who knew him knew him as a gentleman and as a skilled workman. The funeral on Friday was largely attended. Rev. Mr. Ward preached a very appropriate sermon from the text - St. James 4-14, "For what is your life? It is even as a vapor that appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away." The bearers were Messrs. S. and Ephraim Cassel, Thos. Mitchell, Hugh Collum, Fred Walker and Nelson La Fortune. A widow and family of eight survive to mourn the loss of a kind busband and father.
