    Notes:

    House:
David Kuntz founded the Spring Brewery (later renamed the L. Kuntz Park Brewery) in 1844. When he undertook one of the many expansions of his company's premises, on property to the south-west of King and William Streets, he moved this one-and-a-half-storey frame house westward by horse team to its present location.

    Historic Building:
Built circa 1880 by Brewer David Kuntz on property acquired in 1856, from John Hoffman, it became the property of Anna Eckert in 1898 and it remained in her possession until her death. There have subsequently been three owners since 1977. The present owners are Krafa Consultants and Management Inc.
The house is a good example of a mid to late 19th century merchant's home. The two-storey yellow brick structure shows significant Italianate influences, emphasized in the elaborate roof brackets and the two storey projecting bay, with segmentally arched windows. The door is enhanced by its side-lights with a blind transom, which may be authentic or an early replacement for the glass that would normally be here. The porch retains its original detailing below the roof which is supported by chamfered porch posts. The house makes an interesting comparison to the Kuntz-Labatt house across the street.
The west facade and the north and south facades, ending at the one storey portion, of this historical Waterloo home received designation as a Heritage Landmark for its historic and architectural value1a

    Historic Building:
The Kuntz-Labatt's House, which now holds offices and meeting rooms for the adjacent Edward R. Good Funeral Home, was built in the mid 1880s.
The brewery with which the home has long been associated was begun by David Kuntz in 1844. The oldest portions of the business date from 1864. By 1910, the Kuntz Brewery had grown to become Ontario's second largest brewery. Although the enterprise was sold to Carling's in 1929, the Kuntz name was retained until 1940. Colonel Hugh J. Heasley, Manager of Carling's lived in the home from 1944 until his death in 1978. The brewery was demolished in 1993.
Three impressive homes were built by Kuntz for family members on this site. The designated building is the only one remaining. All had similar important architectural features. Although early renovations have somewhat changed the structure, the home achieves a balanced design through the careful placement of windows, doors and Italianate features such as the paired brackets and round-headed windows in the gable. The verandahs, each supported by slender columns, are typical of late nineteenth century architecture.
The Kuntz-Labatt's house is both historically significant and architecturally attractive. For these reasons, the entire exterior was noted in the designation.1a

    ______________

    Carl Joseph Bauer

Another member of the old guard, in the person of Mr. Carl Joseph Bauer of Waterloo Town has departed for the great army in the beyond, on Saturday. He was born June 30, 1824 in Weilbach, Bavaria; came to America in 1854; lived for one year in Buffalo, where he married Sophia Kolbert, a native of Hofgeismar. In 1855, he came to Canada and resided first in Waterloo Town, where he very successfully followed the trade of carpenter. In the early sixties, he settled down on a small property in the west ward of the corporation of Berlin and pursued agriculture, as well as his trade. Several years ago, he sold the place and since that time, resided along with his wife, together with his daughter, Mrs. Theresia Kuntz, in Waterloo, where he enjoyed the most affectionate care.

As a member of the Catholic congregation of Berlin, he was active for many years as a school and church director. He also served the West Ward for some time as a member of city council. He was a peace-loving, cheerful man, who never became discouraged in the worst circumstances. Especially, did he distinguish himself during his lengthy, very painful sickness by his great patience and endless trust in God, thereby setting an example worthy of imitation.

He is survived by two sons, six daughters, and 34 grandchildren. One son, two daughters and three grandchildren preceded him in death. His burial took place yesterday, on Wednesday, with a large number in attendance.

The survivors, together with his mourning wife, are: Mrs. Louis Kuntz, Mrs. Jakob Ball, and Aloys Bauer, Waterloo; Mrs. John Wintermeyer, Mrs. Edward Fehrenbach, Berlin; Mrs. Joseph Baumann, Walkerton; Mrs. Edward Winterhalt, Montreal; Charles Bauer, Montreal.

    _______________________

Hymmen, Kassel,Grossherzog,Thum Hesson,Germany Sophia was born in 1828, in Hofgeismar, Hessen, which is a small community about fifteen kilometers north of Kassel, Hessen. Sophis'a obituary, which does not mention her parents, does indicate that her siblings had apparently predeceased her, and other information elsewhere suggests that they probably lived their lives in Germany. Sophia migrated to New York, aboard The Lessing and docked there on August 15, 1852. She was 23years old. She came to America to marry her fiance, Johann Heintz, who had preceeded her to the New World and was studying to become a lawyer. He was not there to meet her at the entrance port. She was befriended by a family whom she had met on the ship and stayed with them for a few days, still waiting for her fiance. Since she spoke no English, she went with them to Buffalo, heartbroken and lonely.

In Buffalo, she stayed in an Inn, and she helped with the cooking as she was a trained dietician. This Inn was operated or owned by Carl Bauer's sister, Catherine Able. Carl was staying there as well. After many nights of hearing her crying in her room, he knocked on her door to offer his assistance. He learned of her hardship and offered to assist her. He placed an ad in the New York paper inquiring of her fiance. Months passed and there was no reply. Meanwhile, Karl had fallen in love with Sophia. He asked her to marry him and she accepted.

The night before they were to be married, there was a knock on her door. Two orderlies were there and told her that her fiance was downstairs in a carriage, too weak to get out, but wanted to see her. Sophia saw her beloved fiance and learned that he was very sick with TB. He had been unable to meet her ship; so instead, he sent his friend to meet her with a large sum of money to take care of her needs. His friend nor the money were ever seen again. Apparently, he died within the next 6 months.

Sophia married Karl as planned, but perhaps with a heavy heart. Sophia's surname spelling is Kuhlebert, although it is spelled differently by priests etc.

Karl and Sophia first lived in an area which is located behind the Grand River Hospital in Kitchener -- it was known as Green Bush. They later built homes on King Street, close to Bauer Industries.

Sophia was known to be a small, fair, gentle, mild Saxon. She was a converted Catholic (was Evangelical). She spoke High German to her children. She was always prim and proper. In her later years, she would often be seen knitting stockings. She only spoke German
