Little Henry was just beginning to be a help to his father, but now he is gone to those beautiful realms above, there to meet his mother who had been called to her reward about two months ago. Bechtel. - Noah, son of Solomon and Mary (Clements) Bechtel, was born at Hespeler, Ont., Sept. 7, 1865; died at the High River Hospital, April 17, 1942; aged 76 y. 7 m. 10 d. He was married to Hannah Woolner in March, 1896, who preceded him in death in 1907. He came West in 1911 and bought a farm near the present hamlet of Herronton, Alta. In 1917 he was married to Mrs. C. W. Fox, and together they occupied this farm until the present time. On coming to Alberta he cast his lot with the Mount View congregation, High River, and was a faithful member until death. He leaves to mourn, his companion, 3 sons of Alberta, and 1 in Ontario. Funeral services were in charge of Isaac Miller. Text, I Pet. 1: 24. Burial in the Mount View Cemetery.

Bechtel. - Hannah (Woolner) Bechtel was was born Aug. 8, 1865; died Nov. 10, 1908. She was married to Noah Bechtel, March 16, 1897. To this union were born five sons. She was of kind and gentle disposition, being a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for a number of years and will be greatly missed in the home and the church. Funeral services, Nov. 12, at the home by Bro. I. A. Wambold; at Wanner's M. H. by Bro. A. B. Snyder. May God comfort the bereaved ones

Jacob Woolner, "the third son of Isaac and Sarah (Hembling) Woolner, was born in Suffolk, England, September 25th, 1826. He came to America with his parents in June,1832. After the arrival in Canada he had the misfortune of losing his mother. He was raised by Deacon Samuel Eby. On September 30th, 1849, he was married to Hannah, daughter of Mattias and Susannah (Ries) Schiedel. She was born March 15th, 1828. On March 16th, 1854, they moved on the farm composed of parts of lots Nos. 103 and 110, German Company's Tract, about one mile west of Kossuth, where they still reside with their son, Jacob. On May 30th, 1867, he was ordained, by Bishop Joseph Hagey, as a minister of the Mennonite body which position he has held ever since. He proved himself to be an able speaker and a good worker in the cause of the Lord. Of late years he suffered much through sickness and bodily weakness so that he was not able to fill his pastoral appointments. His family consisted of ten children"

Woolner.-Pre. Jacob Woolner was born on Sept. 25, 1826; died Oct. 6, 1917; aged 91 y. 11 d. He was born in St. Andrew's parish, Suffolk County, England, and emigrated to Canada with his parents in the year 1832, arriving in Waterloo Co., on June 28, where his mother soon died of the cholera. On May 14, 1848, he was baptized and received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Church. On May 30, 1867, he was called to the ministry in which capacity he served the Church as long as health permitted him to do so and was an earnest laborer to help spread the Gospel to all until his end came. He was the oldest minister in the Ontario Conference, being ordained over 50 years ago. On the 30th of May, 1849, he was married with Hannah Shiedel. To this union were born 6 sons and 4 daughters, 2 of whom died in infancy. His first wife died in March, 1897, and in May, 1899, he was united in marriage with Nancy Kramp (whose maiden name was Reist). She died on Apr. 23, 1913. There remain to mourn his loss 5 sons, 46 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral was held on Oct. 9. Services at the house conducted by Bro. Noah Stauffer and at the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by the Brethren Jonas Snider and U. K. Weber using the following texts which had been selected by the departed brother, Job 5: 26 and II Tim. 4: 7, 8. Burial in the adjoining cemetery. Peace to his ashes.

Breslau (Cressman) Mennonite Church

Services were begun in Breslau in 1815. In 1834, Benjamin Eby's log meeting house, which had been built in Berlin in 1813, was moved to Breslau to the Cressman farm. Preaching services which were held every four weeks began in the reconstructed meeting house in 1837. A new brick church was built in 1856, at which time the old log meeting house was moved to Frederick Schaefer's brickyard. The old building may have been used for storage or an office until approximately 1880 when it was clad with white "Breslau Brick" from the brickyard, and used as a home by Frederick Schaefer and his family. The address of the house is reported to have been 18 Woolwich Street; it was still standing in 1985, according to Alder 1985, with the original log walls possibly preserved within the brick ones.

A summer Sunday School was begun in June of 1872. It was held in the Breslau schoolhouse until 1877 when it was moved to the church. Sunday School continued on in the summers only until 1889 when Sunday School classes began to be held all year.

The 1856 white brick church was taken down in March 1908, and was replaced with a new white brick church. In 1968 the name of the church was changed from Cressman Mennonite Church to Breslau Mennonite Church. Major renovations were made to the church in the same year. It is of interest to know that land amounting to approximately three acres was deeded to the congregation by Christian C. Snyder in three parcels, in 1837, 1859, and 1870.

Joseph Hagey, the first minister at Cressman's, was ordained on February 10, 1839. He was ordained bishop in 1851. Ministers who followed him in serving the church at Breslau were Jacob Woolner Sr., Elias Weber, Isaac A. Wambold, Jacob S. Woolner, and Oscar Burkholder. Services were held every four weeks from 1837-1867, and bi-weekly from 1867-1894 when weekly services were begun

Wanner Mennonite Church
Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.

Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.

The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.

The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. Isaac Woolner, "father to Rev. Jacob and Isaac Woolner, was born near Beckles, St. Andrews Township, Suffolk County, England, August 1st, 1792, and died April 8th, 1860. He was married to Sarah Hembling who was born July 11th, 1797, and died of cholera, at Bridgeport, Ontario, July 8th, 1832. In 1832 they, with their family of six children, together with William Howlett and family and James Howlett and family, emigrated to America, arriving at Hamilton, Ontario, during the third week in June. While at Hamilton they, for several days, resided in a house in which the former residents had died of cholera. Here they contracted this dreadful disease which proved fatal to so many of the small number immediately after their arrival at Mr. Peter Erb's, a little north of Bridgeport, in the evening of the 28th day of June, 1832. They came from Hamilton with Mr. Peter Erb who was there on business. No sooner were they in possession of their new home when one of their children took sick and before morning proved a victim to cholera. In less than ten days eight of the party died of the same disease. Some are buried on Dilman Moyer's farm near Bridgeport while the Howlett's are buried at Snyder's, Bloomingdale. Noah Hembling and his wife, relatives of those who came in 1831, also died of the same disease. They are buried on Mr. Moyer's farm. After the decease of the mother of the named family, the father, Isaac Woolner, was married again. His second wife was Bridget Connor, widow of Mr. Connor. There were six children of the second wife, namely: Ann, married to Samuel Rowney, Abraham, William, married to a Miss Moore, George, James, and Mary Jane, married to Joseph Carr.

Notes:

North of the village of Bridgeport, on the corner of two adjoining farms, lie, the bodies of cholera victims. Mr. Wilfred Roedding of Bridgeport in 1966, can remember seeing at least 2 large crosses and 4 or 5 small crosses. The people buried here are: Mrs. Isaac Woolner (Sara Hembling) born Jul 11 1797 died July 8, 1832. One Woolner child June 29, 1832, Noah Hembling (brother of Sarah), Noah Hembling's wife Hannah, their daughter Mary Hembling 1825-1832.

These people are buried in the corner lots ot two farms, the Dilman Moyer farm and the farm of John Brubacher, later Roedding and 1965 Angus Snyder farmer, now sold for development and the property of the present Brubaker farm. The house of the Dilman Moyer was across the road, and the barn where the Oswald Mink Farm is. Mr. Wilfred Roedding remembers (1966) seeing wooden crosses in 1905, and the date on the crosses was nearly faded, but could make out he the date of 1832. Dilman Moyer sold the farm to Pomeroy, J. B. In 1906 and moved Disbury, Alberta. He remembers 2 larges crosses and possibly 4 or 5 small crosses. The mounds of the graves could still be seen in -1940 and possibly there are still a few mounds today (1966)

Martin Schiedel, "was born September 2nd, 1796. On March 17th, 1825, he was married to Susannah Ries who was born March 21st, 1796, and died December 13th, 1872. In 1825 (about a month after their marriage) they, in company with the Clemmers, Clemenses, and others, moved to Canada and settled near Breslau, Ontario, where they resided until their deaths. He died April 28th, 1863, leaving a family of eight children"
