    S. CORNELL'S HOTEL

After getting off the cars at Preston we stepped into the comfortable bus running to the North American Hotel. All our travelling readers are acquainted with the "jolly phiz" of the doctor - "mine host" of the North American, and also with the superior quality of his eatables, drinkables and smokeables, so we need say nothing in regard to them.

The doctor informed us that his mineral baths induced such an influx of visitors last summer, that he has found it necessary to make a large addition to his already commodious establishment. He intends erecting a two storey brick building, 30 by 40 feet, as an addition to the hotel, for parlor and bed-rooms, and a promenade balcony 45 feet in length and about 8 feet in width, he also proposes making an addition of several baths - the whole to be completed by the 1st of June. We expect, ere many years, to see the Preston Mineral Baths as popular with us provincials as Saratoga is among our American cousins.

One who will soon be classed among the old settlers of Preston is Christopher Kress, who by his energy and pluck has accumulated considerable property and who has greatly aided in giving Preston a good name as a desirable place of resort for the cure of rheumatism and kindred diseases, through its mineral baths.

The mineral springs were struck by one Peter Erb while boring for salt in 1838, which he never obtained. He placed no value in the sulphur water he had so struck. After abandoning boring, the water of the spring was employed for driving an overshot wheel of a wagon making shop, occupied by one Daniel Hagey, until Mr. Samuel Cornell obtained from Mr. Joseph Erb sufficient land near the spring to erect an hotel. Mr. Cornell with great energy built suitable premises and a bath house with boiler to enable him to furnish hot and cold baths. His undertaking proved successful but death, terminated his career. The property was sold and Christopher Kress became its owner. He greatly enlarged, improved and ornamented it and the invalids who have sought and obtained relief at the Preston mineral baths count by the hundreds.

    Notes:

    "Dear Dr. Carroll

Having noticed in the Guardian your request to forward to you any remembrances of the late venerable Father Corson, I send the following: I first saw and heard Mr. Corson in the Township of Waterloo, about a mile and a half above Preston; the ' preaching place' was at a primitive log-house, the residence of the late Samuel Cornell, to which place my parents used to repair weekly for preaching and class-meeting, taking me with them this was about the year 1824 or 1825. Memory now paints Mr. Corson as a light, nimble, tough little man, of about 125 or 130 lbs. avordupoise, with light hair and sharp, sparkeyes. His manner of preaching was quick, bordering on the abrupt; his subjects were generally solemn; his appeals sharp; his applications appropriate; and his proofs always cogent and logical; and, I ought to add, his method generally orderly and systematic. About the time I speak of, I witnessed what, to my young mind, appeared to be a hard test of his muscular ability. At the preaching, a tall, muscular, large-boned Dutchman, lately converted, applied for baptism by immersion at the hands of our little hero. A procession was formed, headed by our preacher, arm in arm with the neophyte, followed by a singing band of brothers and sisters, who sang with power and pathos the old expressive stanza,

    'Then let our songs abound,
    And every tear be dry,
    We're inarching through Emmanuel's ground,
To fairer worlds on high, &c.'
