PRESTON'S OLDEST NATIVE RESIDENT CALLED BY DEATH

Mrs. Julia Anne Henderson Died Saturday Afternoon in her 90th Year: Born in Preston

A link in the history of Preston from 1840 was broken S aturday afternoon, by the death of one of the towns oldest, if not the oldest and popular residents, Mrs. Julia Anne Henderson, relict of Samuel Henderson, who passed away at her home at the corner of king and Union streets. Mrs. Henderson, dispite her anvanced age, up until six weeks ago was vigorous and active. Prior to her illness of six weeks duration she was seen by friends from time to time on the streets, an indication of her activity and courage, being the fact that she was a familiar attendant to the Galt market. It was her privilege to still retain a good memory and the faculty of pleasant conversation despite the march of advancing years. Her passing away will mean a deep loss among those who for many years had been associated with her both in the home and in other ways. A retrospect over the life of the desceased brings to mind the days when Preston was practically still in the wilderness. Within half a block on King street from the place where she lived and where she passed away still stands the house where she was born nearly ninety years ago. With fond memory the desceased on many occasion looked back to the days when the back yard of the home in which she was born adjoined the forests which roamed game, then so common and today so rare in this part of Ontario, the result of Civilization's march. Mrs. Henderson lived through it all experiencing the gradual transformation of the vacinity from a dence woods to an industrial and business area, a change brought about by the effects of fellow citizens of the community in which she was born and which she spent nearly her whole life time. It is of interest to note that the house in which she was the desceased was born is on the Roo's Estate and is occupied by Nettie and Fannie Roos. Mrs. Henderson was a daughter of the late Jacob Levan who came to Canada from France. Her mother was Julia Anne Sauers, a native of Pennsylvania. Her parents after their marriage in Pennsylvania settled in Preston where the deceased Julia Anne Levan, was born on January 8. I840, Sixty six years ago she was wedded to Samuel Henderson, an emigrant from Ireland, who died in Manitoba, in I 910. The parents excepting some years after their marriage which were spent in Ingersol, Bright and Plattsville, resided in Preston, the continuous period of residence here of the desceased having been 49 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William Ewald and Robert Henderson, Preston. Two sons and one daughter predeceased her. They are Samuel Henderson, Saskatchewan: William John Henderson and Annie Henderson, both of this town: there are five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Henderson was the last surviving member of a family of thirteen children and reached the highest age of all of them. The funeral will be held at 2.30 p.m. Tuesday, from the residence King and Union streets to the Preston cemetery with Rev. Knauff pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church officiating.

When pretty well advanced in his "teens" he commenced the life of a copper-smith, and after having served his apprenticeship of three years he was engaged in Skippack, Pottstown, and other places in Montgomery County until 1825 when he, in company with others, namely John Hoffman, Michael Eby, Samuel Horst, Mrs. Winger and family, all from Lancaster County, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario. Mr. Levan located on a tract of land (now part of Berlin) situated opposite the Berlin High School, where he had a shop erected and commenced working on at his trade. (In going through the county one meets with a number of old copper kettles (in possession of the children of our pioneer settlers) made by Mr. Levan. Besides being a copper-smith, Mr. Levan also manufactured a number of door locks and latches which are still in use in our old houses and are yet almost as good as new.) He was united in marriage with Julia Sauers and after leaving Berlin they resided in different parts of the county where he worked at his trade until he was an old man. He died in Plattsville, Ontario, in November, 1877, and she died in Preston in 1885, aged 81 years. To them was born a large family"
