    Notes:

CHARLES F. ERNST, electrician, inventor, etc., Hamburg, Ont., was born September 9th, 1853, at Petersburg, Ont. His parents were John and Julia (Zoeger) Ernst. His father was born in France, while his mother was a native of Germany. The former emigrated to this country, in 1827, and was one of the first settlers in Waterloo county. After leaving the public school, Mr. Ernst took a complete course in the Commercial College, Toronto, in 1870, but has since applied himself with great diligence, to private study. He devoted ten years to the dry goods business, and subsequently travelled eleven years in the wholesale hat and fur line,, but being a born genius, with an inventive mind, he naturally turned his attention to the study of electricity. For two years he was travelling salesman for the Ball Electric Light Company, in the supply line, and now represents the National and Standard Carbon companies, of Cleveland, Ohio, and the Electrical Supply Company, of Chicago, Ill. He is also proprietor of the Hamburg Electric Light plant. Mr. Ernst has numerous electrical inventions in course of construction, but the invention which is perhaps attracting more attention on this continent, than any other of late years, is his "Reliance Fire Escape and Hoist, and Fireman's Auxiliary." This wonderful contrivance was endorsed and recommended by a committee on exhibits, at the National Firemen's and Engineers' Associations' Convention, held at Louisville, Ky., U.S.A., October, 1892, where Mr. Ernst was present with a model. It is over ten years since Mr. Ernst first conceived the idea of a fire escape, that would insure the absolute safety of those using it, and the result of his fertile brain is certainly a boon to mankind. He is a Free Mason and a Forester, and is a musical composer of considerable note. He was married, on the 16th of July, 1876, to Miss Mary A. Laschinger, daughter of Joseph Laschinger, of Hamburg, Ont., by whom he has six children, five sons and one daughter.

    ______________________

The citizens of New Hamburg were considerably moved when the despatch was received on Monday that Mr. Chas. F. Ernst, a former citizen of our town but of late of Detroit, Mich. and who was but in the prime of his life had been claimed by that grim monster death, which sad occurrence had taken place at Detroit on Sunday, inflammation of the lungs having been the cause of the same. His remains were brought here yesterday forenoon, and laid to rest in the Evangelical cemetery at 2 o'clock in the afternoon in the presence of many of his friends, who had come to have a last glance at the face they once knew so well, the funeral having taken place from the residence of Mr. J. Laschinger. The deceased, who was the youngest son of the late John Ernst, of Petersburg, was 45 years old and was married to a Miss Laschinger, sister of Mr. Jacob Laschinger. Many years ago he conducted a general store at Tavistock, after retirement from which he had been travelling most of the time for different wholesale houses in Canada but the last few years, and since leaving New Hamburg, he represented an American house, dealing in electric apparatuses and his territory comprised a great part of the United States and all Canada, with headquarters at Detroit. While a citizen here it was to his enterprising spirit that we owed the introduction of our electric light system; in public matters he always evidenced great interest and was the first president of the once New Hamburg Poultry Association. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn their loss of a kind husband and an indignant father. We extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy.

    Notes:

    The Late John Ernst

John Ernst, Sr., who died at New Hamburg on the 1st inst., was born at Grand Village, near Belford, Lorraine, France, on the 4th of Dec., 1807. He emigrated to America in the year 1827, landing in New York in the same year, where he remained but one year, long enough to enable him to learn the English language somewhat. He came to Wilmot township in 1838 where he took up land, cleared his lot, and remained on the same for a long time. During his time there the cholera (1837) broke out, and while the sad epidemic lasted he helped to bury many of his neighbours, even making coffins from rough lumber and taking them to the burying ground with his ox team, and attending to the burial all by himself. After that he removed to Petersburg, where he engaged in the general store business and hotel keeping. Some time after that he owned and run the New Dundee mills, also the tannery at Petersburg. He was a man of good judgement, and a man on whose word you could rely. Any appointment he made he was sure to fulfill; he was a man of temperate habits although a hotel keeper for over 40 years. Some years ago he withdrew from actual business pursuits, but was always ready to enter into conversation on the topics of the day, as well as render any assistance where needed if at all in his power to do so. About six weeks ago he was attacked with bronchitis, then heart trouble set in from which he never rallied. Although far advanced in years he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and was prepared to meet his Maker. In years gone by he held different municipal offices, was Justice of the Peace and also issuer of marriage licences. He was postmaster at Petersburg for 44 years, and was one of the first postmasters in the County of Waterloo. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and was ever ready to do a good turn for his party. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity and was an old member of that body. His remains were taken to Petersburg, for internment on Wednesday Feb. 3rd. He leaves one daughter and three sons to mourn his loss; his wife preceded him some fifteen years ago.

    Notes:

Jacob Merner with his wife and family emigrated from Germany and settled on a farm miles west of New Hamburg in 1837. Several of the ten children still survive, among them being Mr. Christian Merner of whom a sketch appears elsewhere. Wm. Smith had the first blacksmith shop. It was here that the late Samuel Merner learned his trade. Jacob Brill was the first cooper and did a thriving trade in barrels, churns, &c. The pioneer weaver was John Oehm who made cloth for his numerous patrons on his hand loom. Theobald Seyler owned a frame hotel on the site of the present Queen's and John Boeckner did the cobbling and shoemaking for the neighborhood. The latter's shop was on the site of the present residence of Mr. D. Becker. Wendel Schuyler was the first teacher in 1838 or 1839. A portion of the first log schoolhouse still stands near the Cemetery and is used for a dwelling: Soloman Weaver was a miller in the early days and later became an evangelical minister. Business men who came a little later were Wm. Burkhold, who established a brickyard; Fred Merner who started a carriage business and Wm. Hunter, who had a general stare. In the early 50's Sylvester Frank built a brewery. It was of brick and a portion of it is still in use in connection with the present brewery. The village has gradually increased in population and assessment with no particularly stirring events to mark its even progress. The great flood of 1883 due to a cloudburst is an event never to be forgotten by those who witnessed it. On that occasion the water covered the streets up to the door of the Imperial hotel, and swept away the Rau, Hartman and Helmer bridges, thus cutting the village off from the outside world. In this its golden jubilee year, New Hamburg stands a community of contented, busy people, living in good homes and doing admirably their little share of the great world's work.
