On Tuesday morning, there died rather suddenly, a lady well known and highly respected in Galt, in the person of Mrs. Wm. Brown. The deceased lady was in the 76th year of her age and had been a resident of Galt for many years. She always enjoyed remarkably good health and attended the U. P. church, on Sunday last, of which church she was a life long, devoted and consistent member. Her death was a great shock to her many friends. Deceased was the relict of the late Wm. Brown, who died in 1855. Her maiden name was Betsy McKenzie and she was born in Roxburgshire, Scotland, on April 3rd, 1819, coming to Canada with her parents and settling in North Dumfries in May, 1823, on the farm now occupied by Mr. Angus McBain, about two miles from town. Here she resided in the early years of her life. The deceased lady was married to the late Wm. Brown in 1838. She then removed to Glenmorris, where her husband taught school for a number of years. Afterwards they removed to Galt, where the deceased resided up to the time of her death. Her husband also taught school in Branchton and Caledonia, for a time. Mrs. Brown was a lady of many virtues, kindly traits of character and true womanly instincts. She was the mother of four children; one son, John, met a watery grave, at the dam here, while in bathing, in 1857. A daughter is Miss Agnes Brown who resides in Galt. Deceased leaves two brothers and two sisters. The latter are Mr. Wm. McKenzie, Beverly street, (at whose residence she died) and Mr. John McKenzie, who resides at the corner of Spruce and McNaughton streets. The sisters are Mrs. John Scrimger, North Dumfries and Mrs. Jas. B. Keachie, Beverly. Mrs. Brown's father, died Oct. 10th., 1894 and her mother, on the 13th Feb., 1863.
