Elliott Soap Works, J.& R. Elliott, Harris Street - "Where there is life, there's soap," is a new version of an old adage, but a true one nevertheless. Soap is one of the many necessary articles required in everyday life. Among the varied manufacturing industries in Galt, the Elliott Soap and Candle Works stand alone in their special line. The business of this concern has been established for over 30 years, the present firm coming into possession 6 years ago, succeeding Dixon, who succeeded Simpson, who succeeded Oliver, etc. The premises occupied are 34x106 feet in dimensions and 1 ½ stories in height, being substantially built of stone. There is one vat having a capacity of 16,000 lbs. of soap; there are also the necessary moulds, presses, etc., and a six-horse-power engine, used for pumping water. The special brands of soap manufactured - which are all laundry - are: "Pure," "Free Trade," "Sultana," "Dominion" and "Electric." The trade of the concern, which is excellent and steadily increasing, goes from London, Walkerton, St. Catharines, Brantford and Toronto, and all intermediate sections. Employment is furnished to four competent workmen. Messrs. Elliott are natives of Canada, and are active energetic and enterprising business men, and are on the sure road to business success.

    Notes:

    Mr. James McQueen, of Beverly

At the time of our last issue all the information we could obtain led us to the opinion that before another this honored resident of Beverly would have passed to his eternal rest.

It is hard to remember the time when the name of James McQueen was not foremost in the record of the life of the Township he had made his home. He was barely 26 years old when he took up land within its borders, and while the necessity for active exertion, with a young and growing family clustered around him, largely occupied his younger days, he yet found time to give to the public concerns of the Township and Province that attention which made his assistance and advice most valuable and most eagerly sought for. In 1852 he entered municipal life as a member of the Council, serving continuously for nine years, during six of which he was reeve. He then retired and could not be prevailed upon to again re-enter, saying to those who at times attempted to get him to alter his decision that he had done his share, he had borne his burdens, and that to younger men he would leave the work. He was an ardent politician with strong opinions as to the righteousness of the Reform cause and there was not a leader of that party which had not at all times his most cordial support. The Hon. George Brown was his ideal of a model statesman and no man could be more thorough, more untiring, in his support of that gentleman than was the subject of this notice. He was a keen opponent, but not an unkind or harsh one, and while very determined n his line of political life, he extended courtesy and toleration to his opponents. Mr. McQueen was a Presbyterian in religious belief and a staunch adherent and attendant of the church after its establishment at Kirkwall, having been continuously one of its elders from its very earliest days. He was also a very warm supporter of education, free and general, and gve every assistance to the progress of the earlier and later efforts to place that priceless boon within the reach of all.

In private life Mr. McQueen was the careful, loving husband parent, and the cordial friend of a large section of the residents of the Township. Ever ready with sound advice and assistance, when appealed to, he enjoyed the respect and affection, nay, almost veneration of those with whom he was brought more intimately in contact, and now scattered through the Dominion and United States will be many who will earn with affectionate regret that this "Pioneer of Beverly" is no more.

Mr. McQueen was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1807, and came to Canada with is wife and the children they born to them in 1833. Leaving his family in Toronto for a short time, he tramped west as far as London, but becoming dissatisfied with the chances there he returned and after a very short time selected the homestead in Beverly, where he has since continuously resided. Mrs. McQueen died about five years ago. Their family consisted of six sons and four daughters, all of whom are living except Mrs. Wm. Elliott, who died about ten years ago. His sons are Messrs. Robert, John, William and Thomas McQueen, of Beverly, Mrs. James McQueen, Postmaster, of Dundas, and Rev. David McQueen, Presbyterian Minister, of Edmonton, N.W.T., who, hastily summoned home arrived in time to receive his aged parent's farewell. His daughters are Mrs. Donald Martin and Mrs. Robert Elliott, of Galt, and Mrs. John Lindsay, of Beverly.

Mr. McQueen's interment took place on Thursday, in the Kirkwall cemetery, his remains being followed to their last resting place by an immense gathering from all parts of the Township and friends from different parts of the Province.
