Well-known Artist Died on His Verandah
Precocious in Art Even in Young Boyhood
Success as a Delinatoer of Faithful Likenesses

There will be general regret in the city and in the homes of many patrons and admirers in Canada and the United States at the death on Wednesday afternoon, June 26, at his home in this city, of Mr. P. Dierlamm, the well-known artist. Mr. Dierlamm died at the age of 60 years. He had been failing in health and strength the last few years but his death nevertheless came rather un-expectedly, as he died peacefully in his chair while taking the air on the verandah about two in the afternoon.

Mr. Dierlamm was born in Schoenberg in the German Rhine country and came to Canada with his family at the age of three years. At the early age of seven he began to paint landscapes in water color, and despite discouragements offered by his teacher who labored to make him to understand it was no art school he was attending, his copy books abounded with water color sketches of animals, birds and landscapes. He took delight in the study of different trees and drove quite a trade with his juvenile comrades for pictures at 25c. each. In due time he went to Toronto to study portrait painting with Mr. Bridgeman, then with Mr. Ross, and later with J. Colin Forbes, who was well known as a painter of celebrities. Mr. Forbes recognized young Dierlamm's ability and employed him to assist Mr. Forbes in painting portraits. Mr. Dierlamm imbibed great admiration for Mr. Forbes during their association together and was much influenced by the Forbes methods and style.

He studied also in Chicago under noted tuition, as well as under New York teacher.

Mr. Dierlamm in due time set up for himself as an artist, and has painted a very large number of successful, lifelike portraits, including those of not a few prominent men. The fine portrait of Hon. Thomas Ballantyne which graces the Hospital, was his work, as was also that of the late James Trow, M.P., which was presented to him by his associates of the House of Commons and is now in the keeping of ex-Ald. James Trow. Mr. Dierlamm, also painted portraits of Rev. Dr. Deacon, M.A., Rev. Dr. Wardrope, Mr. M. F. Rittenhouse (the Chicago millionaire- philanthropist and former Canadian), Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walsh, Mr. Ed. Walsh and others. A fine portrait of ex-Mayor William Davidson unfortunatbly perished in the old City Hall fire.

Mr. Dierlamm displayed real genius as a portrait and landscape painter, and his success in reproducing speaking likenesses and faithful, natural resemblances was truly remarkable. As it was, his work is known from coast to coast in many places on this continent, besides having had paintings exhibited at famous Expositions in Europe. Had he been blessed with rugged health commensurate with his high character and natural artistic ability, nothing could have prevented his attainment of celebrated status among the artists of this continent. It was a pathetic misfortune that so fine a man should have been so sadly limited in his usefulness and career by what he could not control.
Mr. Dierlamm leaves behind him his widow, who was Miss Ida Moyer, and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Norman Fleischauer, Wellesley Mrs. Samuel Fleischauer, city Cleveland Dierlamm, Regina, Sask. ; Arthur Dierlamm, at home. Rev. Henry Dierlamm, for about forty years a widely-known Evangelical minister, who died a few months ago at Elkton, Mich., was a brother. The following other brothers and sisters survive George Dierlamm, Clifford, Ont.; John Dierlamm, city: Mrs. F. Steinman, Pigeon, Mich., Mrs. Justus Roedding. Ayton, Ont.

Mr. Dierlamm was attached to the Evangelical Church and was a man of the utmost worth and integrity. He had resided in Stratford since 1899.
