Peter F. Schummer, St. Clements, was born in the City of Syracuse, New York, on March 19th, 1857. He parents died when he was but two years old, and he was brought up by his grandparents, residing with them until fourteen years of age, when he was employed in the store of his uncle in that city for a year. He subsequently learned the tinsmithing trade, and later attended colleges Buffalo, Baltimore and Berlin, Ontario at the age of twenty-two receiving the position of teacher at the Separate School, St. Clements, which he held for three years. He afterwards opened up a tinsmith shop in the village and three years entered into partnership with Mr. A. Starr, purchasing what was known as the Old McNab store. In two years he bought out his partner's interest and became sole owner, carrying on a general store business. Fourteen years ago he built the present store and dwelling, and in addition to a general store business also carries on a tinsmithing trade. In 1897 Mr. Schummer received the appointment of clerk of the Township of Wellesley and postmaster of St. Clements, both of which offices he still holds. Mr. Schummer has also been the efficient organist in the R. C. Church, St. Clements for 32 years.

    PETER F. SCHUMMER, P M.

It is with considerable degree of pleasure that the writer gives this biography of a gentleman so popular and well known throughout this section. Mr Schummer was born in Syracuse, New York, January 19, 1851, and came to Berlin when he was eighteen years of age. Some time before leaving his native land he learned the trade of tin smithing in Buffalo and subsequently worked at it in other localities. On his arrival at Berlin and wishing to improve his education he entered St. Jerome's College where he remained for a period of four years. He retired from that institution with honors and came to St. Clements where he taught school for three years He then abandoned the school teaching profession and engaged in the general mercantile business, which he is now conducting and in which be bas been accorded splendid encouragement from the start, twenty-two years ago. During his business career here he has done a very extensive business in handling eggs and other farm produce. In former years he had quite a large patronage for his tin shop also, but lately the extent of his trade in that line now is in doing an odd job for a patron and to relieve his mind of other cares now and then. The shop, which is in the rear of his store, is one of the first buildings of St. Clements and is quite a venerable landmark.

Mr. Schummer was married twenty- two years ago to Miss Anna, daughter of Mr. Charles Starr, of St. Clements. She was born February 28, 1856. They have had twelve children, but five are deceased. The eldest son, Frank, has already reached manhood's estate and is a bright and capable young business man. He has been manager of the mercantile department for the past six years. Matthew is also a promising young man and is an assistant in the store. Miss Anna May, nine years of age, is attending school and taking music lessons. The remaining four children are still small and under the watchful care of the mother.

Mr. Schummer is another character of the human family who is accorded all due credit for having achieved such success in life as to be worthy of all honors thrust upon them in the middle age of life. He is one of the leading members of the Catholic church here and has been its organist and choir leader for about 25 years; in fact during the entire time he has resided here, He is also a music teacher and quite frequently has pupils. In 1897 he was appointed Clerk of Wellesley township and in the same year received his commission as postmaster of St. Clements. In both of these official capacities be is giving good satisfaction to the public and those in authority, who have honored him with these positions of public trust He is also a member of the Wellesley Township Board of Health, being Secretary of that body.

In worldly affairs Mr. Schummer is comfortably situated. He owns a fine brick residence in addition to his commodious brick store building and the old McNab property. The latter has been principally used for his egg packing. It is now his serious intention of putting an addition to his store room expressly for the post office. If the plans he has in contemplation are carried out we may expect soon to see St. Clements with as neat and convenient a post office as may be found in any other village in the Province. As a postmaster so far be appears to be giving satisfaction to all the Tory element as well as Grit, though he is a staunch supporter of the Reform party and its principles,

His mercantile establishment is most decidedly a credit to the village, as both the lower and upper rooms are packed full of general merchandise, such as dry goods, boots and shoes, ready-made clothing, gents furnishing goods, groceries, &c. The shelves are packed full of all the latest styles of fabrics. For a village the size and population of St. Clements Mr. Schummer's display is certainly a most creditable one. It would seem to one while looking it over that people living here need not take the trouble of going to the larger towns to have their wants supplied in general merchandise.

Mr. Schummer, while a very busy man day in and day out, is an expert pianist and can sit down and entertain his listeners with a classic selection, or sing some of the most popular songs of the day. He has a sweet voice that has had careful training.
