    ______________

    Walnut Grove

This is the farm of Mr. Enoch Detweiler, now an old and familiar citizen of this community. He was born in Roseville, Sept. 8, 1839, and excepting a year or two, has lived here all his life. He was married Nov. 27, 1860, to Miss Victoria Willits, formerly of Beverly. They are the parents of seven children, one son and six daughters. The late Jacob Detwiler, father of Enoch, was born in Pennsylvania, in 1808, and settled on this farm in 1830, where he lived until he died, July 2, 1885. For many years in connection with farming, he was engaged in shoemaking. In 1860 he built a cidermill on the farm. This proved to be a great convenience to the farmers and in season it has been kept in operation ever since by Enoch. It has a capacity of 100 barrels of cider every three hours, the press being of the hydraulic system. The highest number of barrels of cider it has produced in one season was 2,300. The farm which comprises fifty acres, is being worked by the son, William. Thirty three years ago Mr. Detweiler resigned his position as fireman at the sawmill of Henry Bricker, now owned and operated by Mr. D. W. Clemens, and only a few weeks ago resumed the same position as an employee of the latter gentleman. "Walnut Grove," Mr. Detweiler's home, derives its name from the large number of walnut trees now growing upon the estate. Quite a number of them were planted by his father forty years ago, and last year he himself put out 250 of the same kind.

Death of Henry Becker - A Well-Known and Highly Esteemed Farmer Dies After Three Months Illness

The many friends of Messrs. W. H. and E. W. Becker, stationery and shoe merchants, respectively of this town, will regret to learn of the death of their father, Mr. Henry Becker, near Mannheim, which took place on Sunday morning after a three months' illness. Henry Becker was born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany, Sept. 25, 1835. His parents and their three sons emigrated to America about ten years later and settled in Wilmot Township on a farm almost adjoining the deceased's home in Waterloo Township. For several years he worked at the trade of carpentering. In 1862 he married Lena Stoltz and soon after settled on the farm which he occupied until his death. By thrift industry and exercise of sound judgment he became a successful farmer and business man, and later on bought the Jantz and Wingham farms adjoining the homestead. He had few, if any, enemies and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was progressive and desirous that his children should have educational and religious advantages. For many years he has been a ?hren Church at Mannheim. Until about three years ago he enjoyed perfect health, and in November last the disease gained such ahold on him that he was confined to his room. About Christmas his recovery seemed certain, but owing to serious complications his disease, chronic gastritis, took such a virtuous? Form that a few weeks ago all hopes of his recovery had to be abandoned, and he passed peacefully away on Sunday morning at one o'clock. He leaves behind him a sorrowing widow, seven sons and two daughters to mourn his loss.
