    Douglas Schmidt Killed In Accident

    Douglas Schmidt, 25, of Stratford, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Schmidt, New Hamburg, was killed as a result of a single car accident north of Milverton on Saturday night, December 28.

    The accident occurred at 11:30 p.m. when the car in which Mr. Schmidt was driving struck a bridge abutment on Highway 19, five miles north of Milverton. He was alone in the car.

    The police cruiser from Milverton was the first on the scene. Both men in the police cruiser who were making a preliminary investigation, Norman Arand, RR 2. Milverton and a part-time constable of the village of Milverton, Mark Jutzi, were struck by a car driven by George Elg, RR 2, Milverton.

    An OPP cruiser from the Listowel detachment arrived at the double accident scene a short time later and both injured men were removed to hospital. Mr. Schmidt died at the scene.

    Surviving Mr. Schmidt, besides his parents, are his wife, the former Sally Jones; one son, Terry and one daughter, Tammy, all of Owen Sound and three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Jean) Davidson of Stratford, Mrs. Thomas (Sharon) Clements and Shirley, both of New Hamburg.

    Services were held at Zion United Church, New Hamburg last Tuesday.

    Temporary entombment was held in the Graff Memorial Chapel, New Hamburg.

    The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Schmidt, Eric John - Passed away, suddenly, on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Eric Schmidt of New Hamburg and formerly of RR 2, Gadshill.

    He was born 82 years ago in North Easthope township, a son of the late John and Mary Jane (Wilhehn) Schmidt.
    Eric was a member of Zion United Church, New Hamburg and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532, New Hamburg where he had been Past President and member of both the Sports and Poppy Committee, He had served in the Canadian Army during ihe Second World War and was a member of the Restless Seniors, New Hamburg and enjoyed playing cards

    Beloved husband of the former Catherine Emma (Cass) Nahrgang whom he married October 11, 1941. Loving father of Jean and her husband Jack Davidson of Goderich, Shirley at home and Sharon and her husband Tom Clements of New Hamburg. Lovingly remembered by seven grandchildren, Jim and Dianne Davidson, Jane and Jeff Jack, Terry and Shelley Schmidt, Tammy and Kim Beauchamp, Dale and Chris Clements, Joan Clements and Shane Adair and Debbie Clements and Gord Booker and eight great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Minnie Schmidt of Stratford, Also remembered by many nieces and nephews.

    Eric was predeceased by a son, Douglas John Schmidt (1968) and by brothers and sisters, Wilfred, Aaron, Luella Dahm, Edna Miller, Lillian Diamond, Myrtle Schmidt and Helen Lindner.

    Friends and relatives may call at Mark Juizi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St.. New Hamburg on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 at 11 a.m.. with Pastor Bob Thaler officiating. Burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg.

    As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Legion Scholarship Fund.
    A memorial service will be held by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532, New Hamburg at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

    Beloved wife of Eric Schmidt; who predeceased her February 10, 2002. Loving mother of Jean and Jack Davidson of Goderich, Shirley at home, Sharon and Tom Clements of New Hamburg, and Douglas who predeceased her in 1968. Ever missed and loved by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Bill and his wife Rose Nahrgang of Rostock, Joyce Schwoob of Kitchener, Jean Broda of New Hamburg, Donna and Randy Snelgrove of Toronto. Also remembered by a number of nieces and nephews. Cass was also predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Percy and two brothers-in-law, Don Schwoob and Fred Broda.

    John Schmidt - By Record Correspondent - New Hamburg - John Schmidt, 82, well known district farmer died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Diamond, following a lingering illness. He farmed for many years in North Easthope, retiring eight years ago. He was born Aug. 20, 1872, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Killian Schmidt. He was a member of Linglebach's Evangelical Church. His wife, the former Mary Jane Wilhelm, predeceased him in 1935. Surviving are three sons and six daughters, Aaron, Springfield, Mass., Wilfred, Stratford, Eric, RR 4 Stratford; Mrs. Harry (Luella) Daum, RR 4, Stratford, Mrs. Edna Miller, Kitchener, Mrs. George (Lilly) Diamond, RR 1, New Hamburg, Mrs. Milton (Helen) Lindner, Gadshill and Miss Minnie and Miss Myrtle, New Hamburg; also one brother and six sisters, William, Kitchener, Mrs. Lizzie Boss, Alpena, Mich., Mrs. Annie Carnochan, and Mrs. Maggie Hoffer, Elmira; Mrs. Lavine Weber and Mrs. Mary Amos, Kitchener. JOHN SCHMIDT - By Record Correspondent - NORTH EASTHOPE, Jan. 2 - A stroke, suffered early Tuesday morning, ended in the unexpected death four hours later of Mary Jane Wilhelm, wife of John Schmidt, North Easthope township, Mrs. Schmidt, born in Wellesley, was in her 58th year. She attended Lingelbach's Evangelical Church. Surviving are her husband, three sons, Elroy in Honolulu, Wilfrid and Eric at home, and six daughters, Luella, Mrs. Harry Daum, South Easthope, Edna, Mrs. Kenneth MacGregor, Ailsa Craig, Lillian, Mrs. George Diamond, Wilmot township, and Minnie, Mrytle and Helen at home, and nine grandchildren. Three brothers, George Wilhelm, South Easthope, Aaron of East Zorra and John of Stratford, also survive with three sisters, Mrs. John Snyder of Wallace, Mrs. Peter Lingelbach, North Easthope, and Mrs. Forsyth, Kitchener. Three sisters predeceased her. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the home at 1: 30 o'clock to Lingelbach's Evangelical Church. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery. Reverend C. R. Krauth and E. N. Mohr, Wallace, will officiate.

    NEW HAMBURG. Sept. 17 -- Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang, 41, Moyer Street, died at Freeport Sanatorium yesterday after an illness of two years. Born in Blenheim Townshlp, her maiden name was Gertrude Gow, daughter of Mr and Mrs. William Gow, who now reside at Ratho. Her marriage took place Oct. 28, 1924, at Ratho. Mrs. Nahrgang attended the Evangelical Church, New Hamburg. Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by three sons, Robert, William and Percy. and three daughters, Mrs. Eric (Katherine) Schmidt, Jean, Joyce and Donna, all of New Hamburg; six brothers, Michael, Cookstown, Allan, Woodstock, James, London, William, Blythe, Robert, Waterloo, and Fred, Bright; three sisters, Mrs. L. Shearman, Mrs Irvine Zinn and Mrs. James Pettigrew, all of Bright. two grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held from the Becker Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon. Arrangements are not complete. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery New Hamburg. The remains are resting at the Becker Funeral Home.

    Obituary

    On Sunday evening there died at his home in Elmira one of the old residents of upper Woolwich in the person of Kilian Schmidt. Deceased was born in Hattenrode, Kurhessen, Germany, on the 17th of August 1840. In 18?? He came to America. In 1899 he was married to Anna Mohr who died, without issue, in the second year after their marriage. About two years later he was married a second time, namely to Catherine Grube, who with 8 children survives him, two children having died in infancy. The surviving children are: Annie (Mrs. Carl Weidenhammer); John, living near Shakespeare; Elisabeth in Brantford; Henry and Maggie on the old farm homestead; Lavina (Mrs. Weber,) New Hamburg; Willie, in Berlin; Mary, at home. Deceased lived six years in Wallace township and about 27 years in Upper Woolwich. Two years ago he bought a house in Elmira where he has been living since. He enjoyed good health until about a year ago from, which time gradually failed until he final summons came on Sunday evening. His remains will be laid to rest in Elmira Union Cemetery, this (Wednesday) afternoon.

    New Hamburg, Jan 30 - Abram Nahrgang, 69, died suddenly last evening at his home, Joseph Street. Deceased was born in Wilmot Township on March 12 1872, a son of Mr. And Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang. Ten years ago he lost his left arm in a threshing accident and has lived retired since. He was married three times. His first wife, Miss Coxson, died some years ago and he married Catherine Brenemen, who passed away three years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Mrs Smith, four sons, Isaac of New Hamburg, Abram of Waterloo, Percy and William of Illinois, one brother, Urias of Haysville, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be held Monday afternoon from the home at one o'clock to the Blenheim Mennonite Church fro services at 2: 30. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Moses Roth will officiate. Remains are at home.

    Abram Nahrgang

    The death of Mr. Abram Nahrgang occurred very unexpectedly at his home here last Thursday evening, January 29. Though under medical care for a week, he passed away suddenly after the evening meal from a heart attack.

    The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang and was born in Wilmot Township on March 12, 1873, being in his 69th year. He spent his early days on the farm and about thirty-five years ago, moved to New Hamburg where he had resided since. Ten years ago he lost his left arm when caught in a threshing machine and had since lived retired.

    Mr. Nahrgang was married three times. His first wife, Laura Waldie, died a year after their marriage and he later married Catharine Brenneman, who predeceased him three years ago.

    Besides his third wife, formerly Mrs. Smee, he is survived by four sons from the second union, Isaac, New Hamburg, Abram of Waterloo, Percy and William of Moline, Ill., 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

    The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home to the Blenheim Mennonite Church for service and interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Moses Roth was in charge of the funeral service.
