    Nicholas S. Ball.

The subject of this sketch has been identified with the business interests of Hawksville ever since he took charge of the Crystal Springs Tannery in 1872. He was born on his father's farm just a short distance from the village in 1846. He also carried on the shoe business in Bamberg about five years, and for three years operated the tannery. After giving up the tannery he conducted the boot and shoe business in the place now occupied by Mr. James Hall. In 1876 he erected his present shop and residence combined, and is therefore not dependent on anyone for a home or a shop to work in. Mr. Ball has been married twice, his first marriage being in 1868 and the second in 1887. His present wife is a daughter of Mr. Wendel Pick. He has a family of seven children. Though Mr. Ball has many orders. during the year to make boots and shoes himself, he keeps on hand quite a large stock of the best and latest styles in ready made footwear. He always strives to do good honest work, and as a consequence has as large, if not a larger patronage than any other village shoemaker in Waterloo County. Mr. Ball has also been assessor for the past ten years, for the north half of the East Section, Township of Wellesley. He and his wife are members of the Catholic church.
