    Notes:

"It wasn't luck that built the business, but quality and service."

This is the slogan of Wingham's Market. Charles Wingham, proprietor of Wingham's Market, began his career in the meat business in Stevens county with a market on the corner of Main and Astor, where the Bank of Colville now stands. That was in 1900. Three years later he conducted a similar business in Marcus and then returned to Colville, purchasing his former market. In 1905 he bought the P. H. Hessel business, and soon he was managing five markets, one in each of the following towns: Chewelah, Addy, Springdale, Meyers Falls, Colville. Finally Mr. Wingham purchased the interests of his partners and concentrated his attention on the Colville business.

Six years ago he built the brick building in which he is conducting one of the best equipped and most modern meat markets in the northwest. A modem chilling plant, using the ammonia system, is part of the up to-date equipment of the market. There is the latest type of sausage machinery, a hydraulic press for pressing out lard, and other improved accessories. The walls and woodwork of the basement and the chilling plant are enameled with packinghouse enamel. Everything is as clean and spotless as the most particular housewife could desire and thirty years of experience could make it.

One is impressed not only by the sanitary appearance of the shop, but also by the attractively arranged displays of meats, fruits and vegetables. Head lettuce, leaf lettuce, tomatoes, celery, cauliflower, radishes, grapefruit, oranges and other fruits and vegetables in and out of season look very inviting to the shopper as they are placed on exhibit by Mr. Shonewald each morning. It is evidently a belief in the Wingham Market that a meat market should look just as appetizing as a confectionery showcase or a delicatessen display. Much of the credit for his success is attributed by Mr. Wingham to the fact that he has always paid strict attention to his business.

He began thirty years ago by helping his brother-in-law peddle some meat in a trip through the small towns of Minnesota. He liked it and decided to learn the meat business, and his thirty years of experience have given him judgment in buying meats of quality. There are customers who have been patrons of the market for as long as twelve years, believing in its quality and service. As to service, Mr. Wingham gives a large share of credit for his market's success in serving the public to Frank Shonewald and T. L. Montgomery, who have been with him for some time, and to his son Roscoe who is in the business with him. "It wasn't luck that built the business,' but quality and service" is the slogan of Wingham's Market.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. James Thompson, of Strasburg

The announcement that this well-known resident passed away on Friday morning last, will not take our readers by surprise. From the time the terrible nature of his injury was discovered, it was known that his fate was sealed and that while he might linger for a few days - indeed, the wonderful strength of his constitution lengthened his life beyond the expectancy of his medical attendants - the result was certain. Medical aid was comparatively useless. The fracture of the spine was inward, so that operating was out of the question, and all that laid in their power was to mitigate his sufferings somewhat.

Mr. Thompson was a very old resident of Waterloo. Probably in this section there has not been a man more generally known and respected. Of a shrewd turn of mind, he possessed a wide knowledge which enabled him to take a prudent part in the discussion of almost any question; his caustic speech and happy, witty illustrations, frequently stripping the folly of an opponent's argument or turning his shaft aside harmless. Through industry he had acquired a very handsome and valuable property. He leaves a widow and three sons and six daughters, viz.: - Mr. Alex Thomson, of Michigan; Mr. George Thomson, of North Dumfries; Charles, living on the homestead; Mrs. Lawrason, of North Dumfries; Mrs. Duncan Robinson, of Wingham; Mrs. Tillie, of Luther; Mrs. Walter Brydon, of California; and Misses Lizzie and Isabella, living with their mother and brother on the farm.

Mr. Thomson was the son of the late Mr. Alex Thomson, of near Roseville, North Dumfries. Of his brothers and sisters there are living Messrs. Robert and Joseph Thomson of Roseville; Mr. John Thomson, and Mr. T. W. Thomson, Division Court Clerk, Fergus.

His funeral on Sabbath afternoon last, from his late residence to Doon cemetery was very largely attended by residents from all parts of this and adjacent counties, there being 112 teams containing those attending. Rev. Mr. Tait, of Berlin, in the absence of Rev. Mr. Haigh, of Hespeler, who was unwell, officiated at the impressive ceremonies at the residence, Rev. Mr. Haigh joining at the cemetery.

Obituary - After some time of illness, Mr. Alex Thomson, of Roseville, has passed to his rest. Deceased was a native of Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, emigrating to this country in 1833. After his arrival here, he spent a few years in Montreal, then in 1836 moved out on the farm he so long occupied in North Dumfries, near the village of Roseville. Patient industry hewed out there a very fine homestead, and with his family he reaped the benefit of his labors for many years, ultimately retiring about six years ago from active life, removing into Roseville, where he spent the last years of his life. He was very much respected in this section. His long residence here made him widely known, and we are glad to say that he deservedly obtained and retained the respect and friendship of those with whom he associated. His aged partner in life died about two years ago, and of his family there are living five sons and two daughters, viz.: Mr. Robt. Thomson, near Roseville; Mr. James Thomson, near Strasburg, Waterloo; Mr. Joseph Thomson, of New Dundee; Mr. Thomas W. Thomson, of Fergus; Mr. John Thomson, of Seaforth; Mrs. John Henderson, Elora; and Mrs. Robt. Walker, of Roseville. The deceased was interred in the Ayr Cemetery on Tuesday forenoon last, the funeral being attended by a very large number of his old friends.
